If you are a fan of picking up smartphones with a distinct outlook compared to the traditional variants seen in retail stores and online, we may have some news of interest to you. It has been revealed that Motorola are planning to unleash a rather slick looking blue version of their Droid RAZR smartphone.

To just point out, this has not been made official by either Motorola or Verizon yet. However, images have appeared online recently showing the new blue model in all its glory and as far as different colored smartphones go outside of the regular black and white colors – it actually looks very nice.

The pictures can be seen over at Android Central here, as it comes accompanied with a Verizon database leak which also reveals a potential release date. If the information is correct we could be seeing this handset become available as soon as May 17th. Aside from the color change, there doesn’t appear to be any other hardware or software differences to the standard versions, which means that you’ll still be getting a 1780mAh battery and Android Gingerbread OS.

Speaking of software, the fact that Motorola has seemingly focused on getting a new version of the Droid RAZR out, rather than deliver on their promised Ice Cream Sandwich update may be cause of considerable frustration for current Droid RAZR owners. The update was meant to happen last month, but it never did and consumers are still waiting as of now – officially that is.

For those who are looking for a new handset though, this blue Droid RAZR is certainly an attractive proposition. Take a look at the images for yourself and let us know your thoughts on it. Would you consider buying this or is blue an unusual color for you? After seeing Samsung unveil the Pebble Blue Galaxy S III, is blue the new white for 2012?

April was supposed to be the month when Motorola Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX owners could finally enjoy an official update to Android 4.xx Ice Cream Sandwich, as promised to them when they first purchased their phone.

However, one month later and there is still no sign of an official update in sight. This is contrary to what is going on in the underworld scene as there are easily accessible routes to custom builds of Ice Cream Sandwich for the RAZR and RAZR MAXX.

Now though, we have details of a brand new ICS build that has become available and word has it that it could be as close as it gets to the final official build that Motorola will hopefully release sometime in May. The new build has been identified as build 6.14.84 and the download is available courtesy of DroidRZR.com.

If you are interested in trying this out, you can head to their site for the links and instructions – they have stated though that you’ll need to be running build 6.12.181 in order to get this to work. It also appears that there are some bugs that have been discovered in the new build, with some installations not working.

With this in mind – we would say to hold off for now in case you end up with a bricked device that nobody wants to see. Considering that the official update was meant to be finalized for the beginning of April, it can’t be too long now until Motorola finally releases their update.

Do you wish that there was more communication between carriers and their customers with regards to software updates? Should it perhaps become a legal requirement that carriers need to provide an update schedule for customers before they sign a two year contract away?

Earlier on this week we gave Motorola Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX owners reason to celebrate with the seemingly imminent arrival on a long awaited software update to Ice Cream Sandwich.

Unfortunately though, it looks like both sets of owners may have longer to wait, as information is slipping out that the update may have been delayed. Initially, Motorola had sent out the word that previews would be happening soon for a early look at a forthcoming software update. However, Best Buy are apparently in the know about the update as well and they have updated an employee memo note to inform them that the update has in fact been delayed until further notice.

The memo can be seen here courtesy of Droid-Life and it also reveals that the alleged Ice Cream Sandwich update was scheduled to be happening on Wednesday 4th April. So for those that are not tempted by any unofficial custom ROMs, it looks like your wait for an official update will go on. Obviously there’s no word from Motorola on this as they never actually fully confirmed the existence of the Ice Cream Sandwich update anyway.

On a side note, we also mentioned earlier in the week that the HTC Rezound on Verizon would be getting an update as well. We’re pleased to say that this looks to be unaffected as the Best Buy memo also mentions that the update is still happening on Friday April 6th.

Let’s hope that Motorola will come good on their Ice Cream Sandwich update next week and that no serious bugs are causing the hold up to this releasing. If you were expecting the update to happen this week, give us your thoughts on this apparent delay. Do you find it a bit disturbing that Best Buy have all this inside information on updates, while Motorola chooses to remain silent?

We have some great news for Motorola Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX owners now, as it looks like an official update to Ice Cream Sandwich is arriving soon. Perhaps best of all though, those that cannot wait for official news can update to a leaked build right now.

Word has reached public knowledge that Motorola has sent out invites for a private soak test, in which they’ll be offering Motorola forum members an ”early preview of a new software release” by their own description, with the aim being to provide feedback to the manufacturer, as detailed by Droid-Life.

There is no mention of Ice Cream Sandwich in the invite, but you can bet that judging by the secrecy, it is obviously the very first glimpse of that glorious Android 4.0 update. Just to clarify, this relates to both the RAZR and the RAZR MAXX variant, but additional information acquired by Android Police reveals that an official Ice Cream Sandwich update could be landing on the HTC Rezound smartphone as well – another Verizon device.

While you catch your breath on hearing that piece of intel, we have another piece of fantastic news to share with you. DroidRZR are claiming that Ice Cream Sandwich Build 6.14.75 has leaked and is now ready to download at your own discretion. This update is thought to be for the Droid RAZR only though, and there’s obviously no guarantee that this update is completely bug-free. Our advice to you is to wait for an official version though as judging by the invite – it’s happening very soon indeed.

So Verizon has taken their time to deliver on their promised ICS updates for their current crop of smartphones, but it looks like everyone is going to be very happy soon in the next few weeks. If you own a RAZR, RAZR MAXX or Rezound, let us know your thoughts on the incoming updates. Will you attempt to install the unofficial build or wait for Motorola’s official rollout?

Verizon has recently given consumers a much needed update on the upcoming Ice Cream Sandwich software updates for a collection of their smartphones, but now we have some specific information for those of you with a Motorola Droid RAZR.

Some new information released by Motorola has revealed that the timing of the Ice Cream Sandwich update will differ depending on if you own the US or the international version of the Droid RAZR.

It has now been confirmed by Motorola that owners of the international version will be getting the update first, with the official rollout scheduled to start sometime during Q2 of this year. However, unfortunately it looks like Droid RAZR owners on Verizon Wireless will have to wait even longer for their update, as a chart on Motorola’s website confirms that the handset is still in the ‘evaluation and planning’ phase – whatever that means.

It’s quite a big blow when you think about it, and a move which is likely to infuriate the majority of Droid RAZR owners on Verizon. The Ice Cream Sandwich chart also reveals that handsets such as the Photon 4G, Droid Bionic and Droid RAZR Maxx are also in the evaluation stage, so we could be seeing a reality that Ice Cream Sandwich will still be missing on your handsets by the time Google officially announces Android 5.0 Jelly Bean later this year.

If you are currently bracing yourself for a possible Ice Cream Sandwich update and want to stay well clear of the rooting alternative, it’s a good idea to check out the detailed charts that Motorola has posted on their website. At least you can’t blame the company for being more specific, as they have even gone to such lengths to confirm that ancient products such as the BACKFLIP MB300 will remain on Android 1.5, which we found rather amusing.

If you own a Droid RAZR on Verizon, let us know your thoughts on this. Does the decision to root your device become more tempting by the day when Motorola pull stunts like this?

We have some great news for those of you with a rooted GSM version of the Droid RAZR handset, as it looks as if you are now able to get your first taste of semi-official Ice Cream Sandwich. A leaked build has apparently become available, and it is good news for those of you that were fearing a MotoBlur makeover ruining the ICS experience.

From what we can tell, it looks like MotoBlur customization has been kept to a bare minimum, largely leaving the stock Ice Cream Sandwich UI in tact. Screenshots obtained by DroidRzr show that there are some Motorola influences though, such as the use of their own icons and a slightly different lock screen than the one we are used to seeing on the Galaxy Nexus for example.

In terms of stability, this leaked build appears to run just fine, although it is worth pointing out that this is a very early build of Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3 so if you are a bit conscious in terms of performance and certain features not working then you may want to wait until the promised official update lands later on in the year.

For those of you can just can’t wait to try this out and have experience installing custom roms, you’ll find the download links and all the information you need here. Just to reiterate, this is for the GSM Xt910 Droid RAZR only, so don’t be trying this out if you are in possession of the 4G LTE version on Verizon as you’ll probably end up with a bricked device.

We’ll be very surprised if the official version ends up looking like this, as you just know that Motorola love to add their own influence on software updates via Motoblur. If you fit all the criteria and are giving this a go, let us know how you get on and if it performs well on your device.

If you have been looking to buy the DROID RAZR from Verizon Wireless we have some great news for you as Verizon Wireless has just dripped the smartphone’s price when you agree a 24-month deal, it will now cost you just $199.99 instead of $299.99 over at VerizonWireless.com.

With an 8 megapixel camera, a planned update to Android 4.0 ICS, a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor, LTE connectivity and a 7.1mm thin design there’s a lot to like about the new RAZR (you can see full specs here), but we have to say that some of the devices we saw last week at CES 2012 have overshadowed this, one example of this is the Sony Xperia S and let’s not forget that there’s lots of hype surrounding the DROID RAZR MAXX release.

If you are not fond of the standard black design we can also reveal that from January 23 you will be able to also choose between white or purple variants, either way you get the beautiful-looking woven Kevlar battery cover. The image below (sourced from Droid-Life) shows the three color options which will soon be available, which color do you prefer?

You can see Verizon’s press release which revealed all of this information here, if you would prefer to buy it without a long-term commitment it will cost you $599.99 and will require a month-to-month price plan, contract customers should understand that a $350 early termination fee has been confirmed. If you don’t mind agreeing a two-year deal it will cost you at least $89.99 per month and that will give you the Nationwide Talk & Text 450 price plan (unlimited texts and 450 minutes) and 2GB of data. You can find out all you would ever need to know about Verizon cell phone plans here.

Despite the fact that we have seen more advanced alternatives to the DROID RAZR this week it is still a very formidable smartphone with an extremely desirable design – will you buy it? If so, which color will you choose?

If you picked up a Droid RAZR handset from Verizon recently, we have some news for you now which is set to put a smile on your face for sure. As you know, the handset ships with Android 2.3 Gingerbread officially, but it has now been confirmed that the device has received its first unofficial taste of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

At the moment, there’s still no indication when the Droid RAZR will be receiving an official update to Ice Cream Sandwich, the same can be said for any other Android device other than the Galaxy Nexus that has confirmed to be getting an update – see a device list here.

Now though, it looks like those clever Android developers will once again ensure that the owners will get a taste of Google’s brand new software, months before Verizon and Motorola even begin to think about providing an official update.

This ICS port for the Droid RAZR has been developed by DroidTh3ory, who has provided a video and a few screenshots as evidence which you can check out over at BriefMobile. Since the feat has only just been achieved, there’s no public download available yet, but you can be assured that it is coming soon and much sooner than an official update as mentioned above.

This is no ordinary custom ROM though, as we’re hearing that this version of Ice Cream Sandwich for the Droid RAZR can also be dual booted with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, so users can go from one firmware to another should they desire. At the moment, the build is far from finalized though, with key features such as networking not working.

Hopefully it wont be too long until we see this become available for download, as we imagine a lot of you are interested in getting hold of this. Check out the video below for a confirmation of Android 4.0 running on the Droid RAZR.

Will you pick this up as soon as it is available, or are you willing to wait for an official update which may not come until Q2 2012?

We have some good news for those of you who are planning to pick up a Motorola Droid RAZR at some point this month. We’ve just heard that Verizon will be offering a pretty good deal for new buyers, giving Droid RAZR owners a cash discount to pick up some accessories at the same time.

Verizon hasn’t officially announced this yet, but some intel picked up by Droid-Life reveals that Verizon will be offering a $50 discount towards the purchase of any official Droid RAZR accessories, as long as they purchase a Droid RAZR before December 25th.

According to an internal document, this promotion started on December 3, meaning that you should be able to head into any Verizon store now and see if this deal is valid. As we told you in a previous article here, official accessories include a standard HDMI priced at $59.99, a premium HDMI dock for $99.99, an official car dock for $29.99 or the snazzy MotoACTV fitness watch, which is available for either $249 or $299 depending on whether you pick up the 8GB or 16GB version.

With the car dock aside, those prices are not exactly cheap so that $50 voucher that Verizon are offering will come in very handy you will agree. Since the car dock is priced at $29.99, we’re not sure if this means that you can get it for free with a new Droid RAZR purchase, but we’ll let you know once we hear official news regarding this promotion.

The Droid RAZR is certainly an attractive alternative on Verizon, even more so now given the release confusion surrounding the elusive 4G LTE Galaxy Nexus. We have a feeling that many of you have opted for the RAZR out of sheer frustration on the Nexus situation, so if there’s any of you that are in two minds as to which handset to pick up at the moment, don’t forget about this handy $50 deal.

We have just informed you about the possibility of a white Motorola Droid RAZR coming to Verizon in the near future, but now we switch our focus to the rumored Droid 4 handset. It looks like it is definitely on the way much to everyone’s surprise, but how does the handset fair against Verizon’s other Droid handsets?

If you didn’t see our initial report on the Droid 4, we can tell you that the handset is rumored for release on December 8, the same date that the highly anticipated Galaxy Nexus may also show its face on Big Red. From pictures of the device that have already leaked, the Droid 4 is looking like it will have significant similarities to the Droid RAZR, but will come equipped with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard of course – still an essential factor for many business-conscious consumers.

Thanks to a useful specs comparison flyer that Droid-Life has got their hands on, we’re pleased to say that the Droid 4 is looking like a very strong alternative to the Galaxy Nexus and Droid RAZR on Verizon. Key specs includea 1.2Ghz dual-core processor, a 4.0-inch qHD display, a 5-row slide out QWERTY keyboard with backlit keys, 1GB of RAM, an 8 megapixel camera and 4G LTE connectivity as well – a big plus.

The Droid 4 will ship with Android Gingerbread, but you can bet that the handset will definitely get an upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich next year, just like the Droid RAZR. If you are looking for the decisive factor in choosing between the RAZR and Droid 4, you just need to basically ask yourself if you prefer a virtual or physical keyboard, as the hardware specs are largely the same between the two.

The RAZR also comes with a bigger display (4.3-inch), but the Droid 4 will come with a slightly bigger battery capacity (1785 mAh). Hopefully Motorola will make this official this week at some point. If you are now interested in this handset, let us know how your thought process is going. Is the slide-out keyboard on the Droid 4 a big incentive for you?
