Despite all the great games coming out in recent months many gamers still have fond memories of classic titles from yesteryear. Some of these can be any number of the original classics found in arcades such as Pac Man, but others are from older games consoles going back years. One such game, Doom, is welcomed back to Xbox Live.

The classic first person shooter made its debut in 1993 and was brought to you by id Software, and now according to a report on IT ProPortal is available on Xbox Live again. The original classic has been made available on the platform by those responsible for Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Bethesda.

Users can get their hands on the game for their Xbox 360 console for 400 Microsoft points. The game was arguably the defining title of its genre that led to a variety of rip offs in the following years. This is not the first time Doom has been available on Xbox Live though, as back in 2006 it was put on the service by Activision.

But in 2009 id Software was the subject of a takeover by Zenimax who just happen to be the parent company of Bethesda. In 2010 the licensing deal with Activision had ran out so the game was removed from Xbox Live until now. The game could get itself a number of new fans this time round besides other gamers returning to enjoy it once more.

Where you a fan of Doom or is there another classic title you prefer?

Many gamers across the world will remember the great game Doom, which at the time was the start of the first person shooter craze we all know and love. The game originally came out in 1993 but was banned in Germany in 1994 as it was thought a risk to youth. Now German gamers can enjoy Doom 17 years late after the ban was finally lifted.

According to the BBC the ban on the game was relaxed because it was felt the game was now only of artistic and scientific interest, and would not appeal to youngsters now. Previously the game was restricted to sales in adult only stores alongside pornography.

There is still one version that remains restricted because it features Nazi symbols on certain levels. Restrictions on Doom and Doom II expired on August 31st after a meeting of the Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons otherwise known as The Bundesprufstelle, earlier last month.

The games status was reconsidered following an appeal by Bethesda Softworks, who currently own id Software the developers of the game. They argued that the games aging graphics had long been passed by modern titles, and meant the violence was a lot less realistic.

The Bundesprufstelle have said their original decision was made not just on the quality of the graphics, but did admit that more realistic images can now be found on mobile phones. Originally the decision was made because the game had constant gunplay and “bloody sadistic” violence, which is not balanced out with other scenes.

There were members of Bundesprufstelle that still wanted to keep the restrictions on Doom in place, but these members were outvoted. If the game is released in the country it will still be restricted to those over the age of 16.

An American version of Doom II is still restricted because of the two levels that contain Nazi symbols including swastikas. Do you have fond memories of playing Doom?

Media attention is always high when it comes to violence in video games, and every time a person that plays a lot of violent games kills someone, the media point a big finger at the game. How many people do you know that play violent games? Now how many of these people are cold blooded killer?

While some states try and pass violent games laws, and politicians rally to rule that gamers should have tight restrictions when it comes to the amount you can do in a game, some public figures have a different view. Today we heard from Doom creator and computer programmer John Carmack, who told IG “there is more evidence to show that the violent games reduce aggression and violence”.

This is an interesting take on violent games, and one of the most realistic and violent games we know is GTA, which gives the gamer freedom to do the things they’d never do in real life. This in itself can be a release for people who’ve had a bad day and just want to blow off steam. If it’s true what Carmack said, then GTA 5 will not only show the bad side of life in more detail, it will also help people reduce aggression.

There are millions of people around the world that have played violent computer games over the years, if we could see each and every one of them now, how many have turned out to be violent or cold blooded killers thanks to the games they played?

Having heard from some parents that say certain children they know have played Grand Theft Auto and then gone to school acting out what they saw on screen, this highlights a different view. First the game is for over 18’s, and children are known to copy but could the same be said for adults? Having played GTA 4 a lot, the amount of times I’ve seen adults walk in my home with shock at what is possible in the game, GTA is not for the easily shocked, especially considering some of the mods on PCs.

The idea that thousands of people could go out and buy GTA 5 to help reduce aggression is an interesting one.
