If you are a fan of legendary FPS series DOOM and have been keeping an eye on all the latest developments regarding the game, you’ll probably be as surprised as we are after hearing reports this week that the game has been cancelled.

The good news, is that it looks like the game hasn’t been cancelled and it was just a hoax. AllGamesBeta picked up on some alleged leaked images from 4Chan along with the rumors of the game’s cancellation, but Bethesda has been quick to respond by saying that this information is not true.

Pete Hines has categorically told Joystiq that DOOM 4 has not been cancelled and that Bethesda will be showing off the game in further detail when the time is right. It’s worth pointing out though that this isn’t the first time that we have heard information regarding a potential cancellation for Doom 4. Bethesda again had to deny rumors about this in October of last year, so either there is something fishy going on, or it could be the start of another Duke Nukem Forever situation – let’s hope not.

The game is being handled by legendary developers iD Software, who are supposedly working hard on the game after finishing up with their most recent release, Rage. iD Software are yet to comment on the fresh wave of cancellation rumors, but obviously the easiest tonic to this would be just to release some official media to show everyone that the project is still well and truly alive.

We say official media, as there is now a supposed batch of leaked screenshots for the game which appear to show some of the game’s environments for the very first time. There’s no characters in view though and we have read some feedback online in which most of you argue that the screenshots do not feel ‘very DOOM like’. We would admit that there is a striking similarity to Resistance in these shots, but we’re guessing a clearer picture will be made once we see some official material.

Do you still have love for the DOOM franchise? We’re not going to upload the leaked screenshots here for obvious reasons, but check them out through the link above and let us know what you think about them – can you imagine playing DOOM 4 with the environments shown in the images? I guess a PS Vita version is out of the question.

Earlier this month we reported to you the news that Xbox Live users again had access the original Doom title, which was down to those responsible for Skyrim, Bethesda. Today we have some news of Doom 4 that hints of the possibly of more content on the PS3 version of the game.

It has been known for a while now that id Software is currently developing Doom 4, and since Rage is now out of the way and available, the company are concentrating everything on the new Doom game. An article over at Gamingbolt is reporting that John Carmack was recently being interviewed by Merlininkazani.

He briefly touched on the Doom 4 game and commented what can be expected by the different versions. Carmack stated that id Software were likely to add more content for the PS3 version compared to the Xbox 360 and PC versions, and this was because the consoles Blu-ray player and the extra storage the discs can hold.

Recently there has been talk that the next version of the Xbox may have a Blu-ray player mainly because of the extra storage space. Carmack stated that the “videos are just using the normal game data” when he was asked if the videos on Rage were using the Super Texture Pack. He also said that the same would be used in the Doom 4 game.

He confirmed that the PS3 Blu-ray discs may get filled with more data for Doom 4 than what will eventually get put on the DVDS for the game. Carmack did say though it depends on how difficult it will having “two different builds of data”.

There was also talk of some unique streaming tech for the PC that may provide more detail, but there may be too many risks associated with it. This would mean much more server bandwidth requirements and id Software are having second thoughts committing to it.

For now there is no specific release date for the game but Carmack said that it should be available within the next couple of years, “considering that it’s been in development for a long time now”. Are you looking forward to Doom 4?

As games consoles become more powerful, so too do the video games. Until recently this was inevitably the case; however issues have aroused over the size of the games that have been developed as they try to maximize their potential. Today we have news that developers of the upcoming game Doom 4 are experiencing these issues just as Rockstar Games and Team Bondi did with L.A Noire.

Hooked Gamers originally reported this morning that the game would be too large to fit onto a single Blu-ray disc, since then they have explained that there was mistake made in the translation from their source and later updated to report that Doom 4 is shaping up to include more content on the PlayStation 3 than on the Xbox 360, due to the size issues.

We previously brought you news that L.A Noire developers were forced to cut some of the final build of their game as it would not have fit onto one Blu-Ray disc. Today’s news comes from an interview with John Cormack at Quakecon where, in response to the question whether Doom 4 would feature the same updated graphics that the Rage PC demo featured, he explained that they were not sure how much data the final build of the games would take up. He also suggested that there may be a wait for the next-gen consoles if the build ends up being too big as they will use larger storage discs.

According to Hooked Gamers, in the same interview Cormack also revealed that he intends to make a Rage 2. The first Rage game is expected to be gracing the markets October 4th and PC gamers can expect a Super Texture pack, which adds enhanced graphics not long after.

Are you hoping to see Doom 4 soon or would you rather the developers wait for the next-gen consoles?
