Dell has just revealed a new Alienware gaming PC which is called the X51, what makes it unique is the fact that all of the impressive hardware has been squeezed into a small form-factor, in fact it’s the smallest gaming desktop ever produced by Alienware.

Despite it’s small size the X51 will deliver an immersive experience when playing modern games and will also make a great entertainment hub, as you would expect there’s plenty of optional upgrades available to choose from, but as standard it will cost you $699.

The $699 model features an Intel Core i3 processor, the Intel H61 Express chipset, NVIDIA GeForce GT 545 (1GB GDDR5) graphics, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a 1TB SATA HDD (7200 RPM), Windows 7 Home Premium, a dual-layer DVD burner, 7.1 audio, a 240 WATT Alienware PSU, Ethernet, WiFi b/g/n, 6 x USB 2.0 ports, 2 x USB 3.0 ports and HDMI 1.4 out. As previously mentioned the form-factor is very small, it measures in at 343mm x 95mm x 318mm and it weighs just 5.49KG – we have embedded a couple of images from Dell’s press release below.

In terms of optional hardware upgrades, there’s lots to choose from. Firstly if the Core i3 processor doesn’t meet your requirements there’s Core i5 and Core i7 options available (no-matter what you choose you will get a 2nd-gen Intel Core I processor), also you can get better smoother graphics by choosing the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 555 (1GB GDDR 5) GPU and improve overall performance by upgrading to a maximum of 8GB of DDR3 RAM. Finally it’s worth knowing that you can replace the DVD writer with a Blu-ray disc reader (there’s only one 5.25 inch bay for optical drives) and perhaps upgrade to a 330 WATT Alienware PSU.

If you head over to Dell.com you can take a closer look at the X51′s design and specifications, like other Alienware desktops there will be access to the Alienware Command Center software where you can configure power management, lighting effects and unique gaming profiles.

Do you think more gaming PCs should utilize smaller form-factors?

PC manufacturing giant, Dell has faced a whole host of issues when it comes to introducing products for related markets such as the tablet and mobile. Despite the success they have enjoyed in the past in their target PC market and the fact they were once a dominant force, since the demand for mobile devices has taken over the demand for household desktops they now face a challenge of making an impact in what are already competitive mobile device markets.

Their previous attempt to make an impact came with the Streak tablet which ended up disastrous and was eventually abandoned. The company will be hoping for better luck with their next attempt which they announced recently. As Reuters reports Dell are contemplating a late 2012 entry into the tablet market with a Windows 8 device.

The company’s Chief Commercial Officer, Steve Felice told Reuters in an interview ‘We have been taking our time. The general failure of everyone that’s tried to introduce a tablet outside of Apple. He believes that by taking their time producing a device they can accommodate consumers’ needs and understand them better, hence the late entry.

Dell says they plan to focus more on the consumer needs when it comes to their products rather than making a big impact on the market. While the company has not officially confirmed the use of Microsoft’s Windows operating system as opposed to Google’s Android OS, Felice is reported to have said that he preferred the feel of the Windows OS more. That OS is expected to debut later in the year, another reason why Dell are considering the late entry into the market.

What do you think of a Dell Windows 8 tablet? Does it sound like the sort of device you would be interested in purchasing?

You may remember a while back we introduced you to Dell XPS 14Z, we now have full details regarding technical specifications and prices for what Dell claim to be the world’s thinnest, fully featured laptop with a built-in DVD player.

As with most of today’s laptop offerings there are lots of optional upgrades to choose from when buying your XPS 14Z, however we can confirm that no-matter what you choose there will be a second-generation Intel Core processor, a 13-inch body, a 0.9-inch thick design, Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit (or better), WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, a 14-inch HD WLED display (720p), a 1.3 megapixel webcam, a slot-loading dual-layer DVD burner, Gigabit Ethernet, a 58 WHr 8-Cell battery and 1 year’s basic support. We can also confirm that there is 1 x USB 3.0 port, 1 x USB 2.0 port, 1 HDMI 1.4 port and a Mini DisplayPort.

OK, now that we have got all of the boring stuff out the way we can run through the different configurations available to you. For $999.99 you get the Intel Core I5-2430M (2.40 GHz) processor, 6GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM, Intel HD Graphics 3000 and a 500GB SATA HDD (7200rpm). Alternatively you could spend $1,199.99 and get the same model, but you get 8GB DDR 1333MHz RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M 1GB graphics and a 750GB SATA HDD (7200rpm).

If cost doesn’t concern you, you can choose all of the internal hardware upgrades available to you and pay $1,599.99. This gets you the Intel Core i7-2640M (2.80 GHz) processor, 8GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M 1GB graphics and a 256GB Solid State Drive – sadly there are no upgrades available to give you a slot-loading Blu-ray burner or a 1080p display.

We guess that if you want a thin laptop with a DVD drive this is definitely a model you should check out, head over to Dell’s website to configure a model to suit your needs.

If you were hoping that Dell was going to commit more handsets to Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, then we have some bad news, which puts their future in phones in doubt. We do find this a bit strange, as the once number one computer maker was meant to be releasing an updated version of their Venue Pro, which was to be called the Wrigley.

It’s not hard to see why Dell does not want to commit to Windows Phone, as there seems no sense in having the likes of HTC, LG and Samsung all trying to compete with each other when Microsoft limits them to what hardware can be used. Going on past events, Dell has never been into the cell phone business as much as those rivals mentioned above, so it was only a matter of time before they cut ties with this market.

Having said that, SlashGear does have a feeling that Dell could reconsider this action when Windows Phone 8 Apollo gets released. However, we can see that this would be dependent on what Microsoft’s market share will be in the smartphone market. If I had to put my money where my mouth was, then I would say that this would not happen, how could a consumer purchase a phone from a company that is not in it for the long run?

That’s not saying that Dell will not support WP8, as they will more than likely bring a tablet to market. However, we recently concluded that their tablet would seriously lag behind the iPad 3. Towards the end of last year Dell took the number two spot from Acer in the PC market share, and we have to wonder if they have decided to concentrate on that side of their business? It would make sense, as they need to knuckle down and try to make gains on HP, who is still at number one.

Earlier this week we looked at how Windows 8 would have an extremely fast boot time on SSD, which could beat Mac OS X Lion. This was followed up with a busy week for Microsoft as they promoted what their new operating system will be capable of, starting with a showcase in front of developers.

This was followed up with a developer preview build, and we posted the requirements and download links for this. These included both 64-bit and 32-bit editions, and the same day we posted a hands-on with Windows 8 that showed how to dual boot that OS with Windows 7. Some of our readers pointed out that they left Windows for many reasons, and turning back to Microsoft seemed like an impossible thought. Do you feel the same way?

While the preview is an early version of Windows 8, there has been a Samsung tablet prototype on show that some people feel could help Microsoft in their battle with Apple. This idea sounds good on paper, but Apple has its feet pretty solid in the tablet market and it would take something very special to take market share.

Fans of Microsoft will love the new Windows 8 features and how it will better integrate smartphone, tablet, and desktop computers, although this is something Apple has already done with the iPhone, iPod, Mac OS, Apple TV and iPad. Apple products are known to work better together, which helps them sell more of their products to the same customer. With iOS 5, Mac OS X Lion and iCloud, Apple will only improve its postion.

No other brand has been able to take on the iPad, which entered the market when millions wanted a tablet device but other brands were not ready with the right product. This is not Apple fanboyism but rather fact, some brands lead with innovation while others copy.

There are other analysts that see this as the perfect time for Microsoft to compete, thanks to their dominance in the computer desktop market with 90 percent of desktops. Microsoft entering the tablet market and brining the same integration between its phones, tablets, and computers could mean success.

Another advantage over the iPad is that Microsoft’s Windows 8 tablet will be available on a diverse range of hardware, although this has not helped those that have entered the market already.

When you enter a store and see an iPad 3 next to a Windows 8 tablet from Dell and Samsung, will it be an easy choice?

Are you thinking about upgrading your current laptop or notebook? If you answered that question with a yes, then I think we have some news that could well be of interest to you. Dell has recently announced the new Inspiron 13z and 14z laptops, which are powered by a second generation Intel Core i3 or i5 processor and come with a HD display.

As recently noted over on the techshout.com website, the Dell Inspiron 13z comes with a 13.3-inch screen, while the Inspiron 14z model’s screen is slightly larger at 14-inches. Not only do these two laptops come with 720p HD displays and built-in SRS Premium Sound HD, they also come with an HDMI port that enables it to be connected to a large screen HDTV.

However, users also have the option of streaming HD content wirelessly, by using the Intel Wireless Display technology. Both models come with up to 8GB of memory, an HD webcam and a media card reader. Storage options for the Inspiron 13z model include 300GB or 500GB hard disk drives (HDD), or a 128GB solid state drive (SSD).

Meanwhile, the storage options for the 14z include 500GB, 640GB or 750GB hard disk drives. Both models come with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity, as well as USB 3.0 ports and an internal tray-load DVD combo. They also come equipped with the Dell Stage user interface, which allows users to manage their photos, music and videos with just one click.

According to a recent article at techgadgets.in, these slim and lightweight laptops come in Fire Red or Diamond Black LCD backs, smudge-resistant palm rests and matching keyboards. Both laptops also come with the SyncUP feature, which enables users to keep content and personal data synced to other Stage-enabled Dell PCs within the same Wi-Fi network.

As for availability and pricing, both models have been launched in various locations around the world. Although we know that the Inspiron 14z retails for $599.99, pricing for the 13z model has not yet been announced. Would you buy either of these laptops?

We had first assumed that the Dell Streak 10 Pro would be launched in June; but that time has come and gone. It seems much harder to pin down a release date for a tablet or smartphone these days (Droid Bionic and Galaxy S II fine examples of this). We now have news that the Streak 10 Pro will skip the US and head to China first. We are not certain why this is, but it will be interesting to see how their market reacts to this mundane tablet.

The new Dell tablet is much cheaper than the iPad 2, but that will not be a fair fight. The American company will have to wait until Samsung release their Galaxy Tab 10.1 in China, then we will see how well the Pro will do. One market that it needs to impress is the corporate market, but convincing enterprise users is a lot harder than consumers.

The reason we called this tablet mundane, is because of its specs, as they are nothing special. What you get is a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, 1GB of RAM, Gorilla Glass, 5-megapixel and a 2-megapixel camera and 16GB Wi-Fi. Now these look pretty much the same as some other tablets on the market, and that’s our point. To stand out you need to have an edge.

Samsung has that edge due to its close relationship with Google, and the iPad has the edge because of iTunes – what does Dell have? As a company they used to have the edge, but times have changed, yet Dell has not. If you were to place the Streak 10 Pro next to an array of other 10-inch tablets, you will be hard pushed to tell the difference. How can you have a device that you are unable to see just what it is?

It’s not all bad though, as Dell has always had great build quality, and you cannot have a fragile tablet, as it would not last five minutes. Dell has supplied a number of widgets for the enterprise users; these will make emailing and adding contacts much easier. There is also a widget for a calendar, perfect for keeping your appointments in order. There are other widgets, but these are more for the consumer, such as social networking and weather. There are limitations though, but this is not the fault of the Dell Streak 10 Pro, this is more to do China and the government itself.

If you are an owner of either the Dell Venue Pro or the HTC Desire HD and have experienced any WiFi connectivity problems in the past, you have some luck coming your way as both handsets are set for updates that will fix your niggling WiFi issues that have plagued you throughout your phones life so far.

First up, the HTC Desire HD is currently in the waiting room anticipating a small firmware update that is said to bring “Wi-Fi performance improvements,” plus we are guessing that some other features will be bundled with the update that we are not aware of as yet.

The update is believed to be around 20MB big, and for such a high-end download, it is obvious that HTC have more than just Wi-Fi improvements in store for all HTC Desire HD users.

This latest update will bring your phone up to date with version 2.50.405.2, and if you haven’t yet updated your phone since you received it, we suggest you do so now. As for the latest update, we can reveal that it is only currently available for all unlocked versions of the Desire HD, but carrier-branded versions should be released in due course. Check out IntoMobile for the full story.

Dell Venue Pro have it a little easier, as Dell’s Lionel Menchaca personally tweeted information regarding the update on Twitter. According to the tweet, Dell will be rolling out the update today for T-Mobile customers in the US, and all other networks and carriers outside of the US.

Unfortunately, as IntoMobile have reported, Menchaca updated his tweet and said that all T-Mobile versions have all been delayed until next week. We are not sure of the reasoning behind this, but all other carriers should be able to download the update without any issues.

No news regarding AT&T’s version of the Venue Pro, though. Our only guess is that if you did purchase your Venue Pro via AT&T, it looks like you will have to wait a little longer for your long awaited update. Maybe you could try HSPA connectivity? Or not.

So there we have it. Two new updates that should fix Wi-Fi connectivity issues for the Dell Venue Pro and HTC Desire HD. If you have downloaded any of these updates, please leave us and our readers some feedback so that they can check to see if everything is working as intended.

Remember, before updating we recommend backing up any existing personal data as sometimes updating smartphones can go wrong.

If you are looking for a laptop which boasts 4G connectivity we may have come across the perfect solution for you, this is the Dell Latitude E6420, this laptop has a high price and the 4G connectivity option is not cheap either, however we are sure that this will not bother some of you.

There are plenty of configurable options available when choose to customize your Dell Latitude E6420, the standard model features a 14-inch multitouch LED backlit display which supports a resolution of 1366×768 and in terms of performance-related specs you get the Intel Core i5-2520M (2.50GHz) processor, 2GB of DDR3 RAM, a 250GB HDD and Intel 3000 HD graphics. You also get Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit, an 8X DVD writer and 3 years Basic Hardware Service / NBD Limited Onsite Service After Remote Diagnosis. This model costs $1,284.00, however if you want 4GB of RAM instead you have to pay $1,374.00.

When we were looking through some of the connectivity options we spotted that you could add the Dell Wireless DW5800 4G mini card (with Verizon activation), this costs $249 and also requires you to sign up to a data plan, according to Engadget your plan will cost $30 a month for 2GB of data, $50 a month for 5GB or $80 a month for 10GB.

To be honest with you we were a little shocked by just how much this internal 4G card costs, especially as you can alternatively pick up the Pantech 4G LTE USB Modem (UML290) here for just $49.99. Also these days there are lots of smartphones out there will built-in mobile hotspot functionality, we think that if you use this sensibly it would work out a lot cheaper.

We done some simple calculations and if you buy the 4G card add on and sign up to the 2GB a limit a month data plan you will be paying $609.99 for a year’s access to Verizon’s 4G LTE network, this will give you 24GB of data for the year, which isn’t a lot spread across 365 days. Also if you go over your monthly allowance you get charged $10 for every extra 1GB used.

You can find out more about the Dell Latitude E6420 here, despite it being great for business we can’t help but think that there are better ways to spend your money, do you agree?

Today is May 30th and is nice to see both Dell and HP celebrate Memorial Day 2011. The two companies have been in competition with each other for years, and looking at the deals they have on offer it looks as though the rivalry is a long way from over. Dell will end their deals tomorrow, while HP is to extend theirs to an extra day.

Dell was once the largest PC maker but was pushed to the number two spot by HP. Since then they have had yet more knocks, with Acer now at number two and Apple at number three, leaving Dell now at number four. You have to wonder what they have to do; they never seem to get a break? It seems that they need to have a read of Spencer Johnson’s book “Who Moved My Cheese”, as it seems thy have allowed theirs to go a little stale.

Dell is located in Texas and is the largest non-oil company in the state. That is an interesting fact, considering that they use a number of environmentally friendly technologies for their power; such as wind farms and landfill gas.

So we know that Hewlett Packard has been the number one PC maker for a few years now, but it seems that their growth has started to slow down. We already know that their growth was just 2.9 percent from the year before, compare that to 8.8 for Acer and a massive 241 percent for Apple. However, this is all thanks to the iPad, which has certainly helped boost Apple sales.

We do not want to go down the route of all the individual deals that Dell and HP are offering during Memorial Day 2011; but we will tell you that they both currently have free shipping on all orders. Doing a quick scan it looks as though Dell might have the edge, but that is all down to you to decide.

At the end of the day most consumers do not care who is the number one PC maker, all they want to know is who has the best products, and for some that would be Apple, but that is down to personal taste. Having said that, we have to admire how far Acer has come considering they were never considered to be on par with either HP or Dell.

Whenever Dell or HP have a sales on, which of the two do you normally visit first?
