At the moment the Apple iPad is the most popular tablet PC currently available, the device has had a bit of a head start on its rivals. But a recent survey has shown the device has taken up 82% of the US tablet market. The market for tablet PC’s in 2011 is going to be a lot stronger with units such as the Galaxy Tab, Dell Streak, Motorola Xoom and many others trying to grab a slice of Apple’s pie.

According to an article on SlashGear by Samia Perkins the survey by the Nielsen Company found 43% of iPad owners had the 3G version, while 39% owned the Wi-Fi only version. The nearest rival to the iPad was the Samsung Galaxy Tab which only accounted for 4%.

The iPad is no doubt a great device but what impact will its rivals have on the market? The survey found the Dell Streak is the next popular device followed by Motorola Xoom. This survey was carried out in April while the Galaxy Tab had only been available for around five months, with the Wi-Fi only version only coming out that month. The new 10.1 inch Galaxy Tab will be coming next month and the 8.9-inch version sometime in the summer.

Motorola’s Xoom is a good alternative but unfortunately expensive, and the BlackBerry PlayBook is finally getting much needed updates including the ability to use Android applications. With other companies getting in on the act like Asus with their Eee Pad Transformer device, competition will be stronger.

Do you think anyone can compete with the iPad?

In 2010 we have seen a lot of action in the Tablet PC market, one that perhaps was dead years ago until the release of the iPad. The iPad is definitely the market leader but of course the Samsung Galaxy Tab has kept on plugging away and has reached the sale of 1 million units.

Apple are looking to have shifted 7 million iPads by the end of 2010 but going forward what will be the best Tablet PC screen size for 2011? Well Techtree.com did some surveying with their readers where they asked that the user preference is between 3 screen sizes. The sizes were 5”, 7” and 10”.

Unsurprisingly the iPad took top spot with 48% of the vote and 600 people opting towards it and that is the 10“, the 5” is the Dell Streak and that took 11% of the vote, 139 people voting for it. The stat that has caught taken the surprise amount is the 7” Samsung Galaxy Tab, the device took 41% of the vote having 516 voters. Steve Jobs doesn’t believe in the 7” but perhaps you users do!

Of course all of the devices have their own set of qualities and disadvantages but we want to know what do you think of the research done by Techtree and what would you choose of the 3 models? Let us know in the comments below.

We have some great news for Dell Streak owners now, as it looks like the Android 2.2 Froyo update is now starting to roll out to carrier versions of the device, as some Streak owners on AT&T have already got the update.

In case you didn’t know, the unlocked version of the Dell Streak has been enjoying the Froyo update for a while now, but it looks like Dell are now working hard to push it out to the carrier versions.

A screenshot has been provided with this report over at Phandroid, which confirms that some users have already received notifications from AT&T about the update.

The question is though, have you? The rollout process can often be a long one, so don’t get too frustrated if you don’t have it, but at least you know that you will have it within the next couple of weeks.

If you have received the update, or are still waiting for it, leave us a comment below with your current status.

When Dell announced that they were to launch the Streak, we knew right away that it was not going to be the best device on the market. The reason for this is due to the fact that it has a bit of an identity crisis, as I have a number of people ask me is it a tablet or smartphone?

However, what we cannot get confused with is the price reduction that dell currently has on the Streak, and not just on its price either. So first things first, the price; the usual price is $639.96, but Dell has it on offer for today only for just $552.96, that’s a saving of $87.

However, you can get the device for just $302.96 on a 2-year AT&T activation, and this will come with a navigation bundle. Things get a little tougher from here though, as all of you who have purchased form Dell in the past will know what I am talking about – custom options people.

The first thing you will be asked is what kind of Bluetooth headset you would like, then if you would like a Micro SD Card, headphones and a dock. Do your homework first, just to see if you can get a better deal on these accessories elsewhere. For more details visit Dell. Did you know that you can get the Dell Streak in Cheery Red?

Do you think that this is a good deal?

Earlier this year we briefly mentioned that a cherry red Dell Streak would be released, now we can confirm that this version of the Android 2.2 FroYo-based tablet is available from Dell US.

You can buy your unlocked Cherry Red Dell Streak here, it costs $549.99 for the 16GB model, however if you want to buy it as part of a 2-year AT&T contract it costs just $299.99.

Sadly there is no 32GB Cherry Red Dell Streak currently available, however if it does arrive on Dell.com I would imagine it would cost $399.99 as part of a 2-year AT&T deal, or between $648.99 and $678.99 outright.

We have written plenty of Dell Streak-related articles in the past, therefore it is well-worth checking out this link if you are interested in this device, I suggest that you check out this video walkthrough.

According to this report from Engadget, Dell’s UK Facebook account has been updated with some key info regarding the Froyo update, and it looks like the update will be rolling out this month, to UK users first.

However, don’t worry if you have a Streak in a different region, i.e the US, as Dell has ensured that the update will be also rolling out to other territories after the UK. Here is what they said on Facebook:

”DellStreak will begin a rollout of the 2.2 update OTA before the end of Nov. This is happening over a period of time and staggered by region, starting in the UK.You will receive notification of the update directly on your Streak.”

Nothing like a bit of overall good news to start the day. If you have a Dell Streak, let us know your thoughts on this.

We have an update for those of you with a Dell Streak who are anxiously waiting for any details regarding the update to Android 2.2 Froyo, as Dell has once again reiterated that the update will be available before the end of the year.

While that timeframe could mean the end of December, Dell Streak owners should be encouraged to hear that the company are now also stopping any updates to Android 2.1 Eclair, in order to keep their focus on the Froyo update.

Here is a portion of the official statement by Dell regarding the matter:

”Due to resources and commitments to get our global customers the 2.2/Froyo update by the end of the year, we will not be publishing another version of 2.1 nor will we be pushing out 2.1 to additional customers. I can tell you that our target date is NOT December 31st. In fact, the over-the-air update to 2.2 is target date is much sooner than that. ”

For those of you who were not tempted to install the unofficial Froyo ROM that was released recently, it looks like you are going to be rewarded soon.

If you have a Dell Streak, let us know your thoughts on this.

If you are a Dell Streak owner, prepared to get excited because we have details on how you can download a new Android 2.2 Froyo ROM on your device. It isn’t an official beta build, but appears to be working fine according to others who have tried it.

As reported from Android Community, a full tutorial giving instructions on how to download has been posted over at the Android @MoDaCo forums, courtesy of user Steven Hyde.

He has managed to get a new beta build of Froyo up and running on the device, but you’ll need to upgrade your baseband first if you want to try it out. This task may seem too much for the average Streak user, but for those who are unhappy with Android 1.6 or 2.1 on the device should really try this out.

The download links and instructions are over at the forum. Let us know how you get on and if it worked fine for you, so our other readers can give it a shot.

We have some more details on that new 7-inch tablet device that Dell boss Michael Dell showed off at Oracle Open World recently. We now know the device is actually the Dell Looking Glass rather than a bigger version of the Streak, but we still don’t know when its out.

As reported from Engadget, a video has been obtained and shows the Dell chief unveiling the Looking Glass to the audience. Yesterday we only had pictures of it, so the video reveal is an extra bonus for you.

From the video, Engadget reports that the volume rocker will be located on the top side of the device, and a headphone jack can be seen on the left-hand side of the device.

Hopefully we’ll be able to bring you more details on the 7-inch Looking Glass soon, but for now you’ll just have to enjoy this video and wait for further news on it.

Does their upcoming tablet interest you?
