New Search Engine Cuil: Comparison to Google & Microsoft

We spoke this morning about the new Cuil search engine, which has been started up by a former Google employee and her husband. Now we would like to take a further look at this new search engine and see how it compares to some of the other major players, such as Google & Microsoft.

Cuil founders have said that their search engine does a better and more comprehensive job of indexing online information over their rivals. The technology that Cuil use indexes the web and then understands the context surrounding each page.

Cuil have come out all exited and say that they can take on search engine giants, Google, but I think that they will struggle to do this.

Cuil have said that they use more than 120 billion web pages to build up their index, the search engine say that this is more than Google. We are not certain how many Microsoft index, but it will be less than this figure.

We do know that everything we search in Google, the search engine giant keep and store. I do not think that Microsoft do this. Cuil have said that they will not keep your personal information and this is a great marketing angle, considering everyone is concerned about their online privacy.

Google and Microsoft keep their search results in a classic format, where Cuil makes things pretty by displaying results in a magazine format.

Not once has Cuil said that they want to be bigger than Microsoft; you would have thought that they would set their sites on a smaller search engine, then try to take on the giant.

Cuil say that they move away from the technology that has driven Google to their success. Instead of just looking at the number of quality of links to and from a webpage like Google do, Cuil attempts to understand the information on the page more.

It is amazing at how different each search grabs results from a web page. One thing is sure, Cuil have a mountain to climb before they can match Google.

My closing point: As Cuil has a black homepage, this saves energy. A white webpage will use 74 watts to display, a black page uses just 59 watts.

Have a little play around with Cuil and let us know what you think about it.

New Cuil search engine by former Google employee

An Ex Google employee along with her husband has launched a new search engine today called Cuil, which is pronounced cool. The couple aim to topple Google, they hope to do this by indexing more web pages than Google.

Anna Patterson was Google’s former leader of the search index, her husband Tom Costello, used to research and develop search engines at Stanford University and IBM. The third co-founder of Cuil is Russell Power; he also worked at Google as part of the search indexing team, as well as spam detection and Web rankings. Power is vice president of engineering for the new search engine.

Cuil have said that they have indexed 120 billion Web pages; they have also organized their results by ideas with complete privacy for users.

Cuil say that they aim to be bigger than Google, well they have a long way to go as Google have just announced that they have discovered 1 trillion unique web pages however; it is not certain how many of those have been indexed by Google.

So Cuil said they will be bigger than Google, does not mean to say they will be better. Yahoo is bigger than Google, but we know that Google is better.
