If you have been impressed by the recent unveiling of the Unreal Engine 4 with the E3 tech demo, you may be interested to hear that a rival graphics engine is apparently as good as the Unreal Engine 4.

Crytek boss Cevat Yerli has said that their CryEngine 3 has been available for three years already and is still on-par with what Epic Games have just introduced with Unreal Engine 4.

Introduced back in 2009 at the Game Developers Conference, Cevat Yerli even said that the CryEngine 3 is next-gen ‘ready’ at the moment, unlike the Unreal Engine 4 which is still being developed and is unlikely to make its appearance until deep into 2013. Yerli went on to say that all the things that you’re seeing with the Unreal Engine 4 right now, the CryEngine 3 can do already – hinting that the company hasn’t even ‘put their latest stuff out yet’.

More competition is certainly good when it comes to buying the best looking games next year, but how will Crytek be able to back up their words with regards to Crysis 3? The game will be using the CryEngine 3 next year when it releases, but from what we saw from the E3 gameplay demo, it doesn’t look very next-gen to us at the moment.

Don’t get us wrong, it does look pretty good – but as good as the Unreal Engine 4 tech demo? We’re not so sure for now. The big questions will probably be answered when we find out what the first Unreal Engine 4 game will be and what type of actual gameplay graphics it can produce.

Unreal Engine 4 may be the most impressive thing you’ve seen at E3, but it is also worth keeping an eye on the Luminous Engine from Square Enix too, as we think it looks fantastic so far. What are your thoughts on Crytek saying that their CryEngine 3 is next-gen already and can match the Unreal Engine 4 in quality?

We’ve included a gampelay video of Crysis 3 from E3, as well as the Unreal Engine 4 tech demo if you haven’t already seen it. We’ve also put the CryEngine 3 tech demo from a few months ago as well, since it is probably very harsh to judge Crytek’s engine purely on Crysis 3 – their tech demo is equally as impressive too.

Nobody knows for sure what the true potential of next generation consoles will end up looking like, but Crytek has given everyone an amazing glimpse of what kind of graphics quality we may be seeing when the Sony PS4 and next Xbox finally release.

The company are obviously famed for their Crysis and Far Cry titles, with their latest effort Crysis 2 arguably one of the best looking games on consoles at the moment. Now though, the company has given the public an exact idea of what they have been working on following on from Crysis 2, as they appeared at the recent GDC 2012 event in San Francisco to give everyone a glimpse of their next-generation CryEngine 3, which will power the company’s upcoming releases over the next few years.

To say their tech demo is impressive is probably not doing Crytek justice. There was one particular moment in the clip shown of their next generation character models, which featured a male face amusingly bearing a resemblance to Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer. That aside, the amount of realism shown in the face was nothing short of mindblowing, as was the new tessellation effects that the CryEngine 3 will bring to the table as well.

Skyrim fans will enjoy this video for sure as well, as there’s another segment from the clip which suggests that Crytek could do a fantastic job on an open-world Bethesda style game as well. CryEngine 3 has been developed for games on existing hardware, but there’s no doubt that some of the visuals seen in the video could find their way onto next generation hardware from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo as well.

Check out the clip below for yourself and let us know what you think of it – We’re dying to find out who composed the music that Crytek used as well, so if you know who it is be sure to let us know! Do you think the CryEngine 3 could be the most impressive games engine seen so far, or did the recent Quantic Dream tech demo of Kara win you over more?

The most famous and most significant war during the 20th century is once again about to be experienced in video game form. World War II has been a feature in many games over the years but that hasn’t stopped game developer Stuart Black from attempting to build a new WWII FPS called Enemy Front.

Formerly of Codemasters, Black has now joined forces with City Interactive and has kicked off the start of his new career move by announcing a new game which will allow gamers another chance to kick some Nazi butt. City Interactive describes Enemy Front as being a ‘realistic tale of a hardened soldier.’ According to PSLS it aims to give gamers a ‘visceral experience.’

As the developers explain it will include engaging missions that range from sabotage and espionage assignments to quick skirmishes and engaging enemies behind their lines. These missions will include real-life activities that took place during the war such as deciphering the Enigma code, a task that required allies work out crucial messages which the Nazis were sending each other using the Enigma machine and the Wolf’s Lair, which was an assassination attempt on Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

As Enemy Front is in fact a game and not a documentary there will be aspects of it that do not represent actual events, for instance part of the story describes the Nazis as working on some kind of ‘super weapon’ designed to win them the war. Reports also suggest that the game will be built using CryEngine 3, an advanced game engine from Crytek that was used for their hit game Crysis 2. It features particular attention to detail as far as firefights and explosions are concerned making it perfect for this type of game. The game is expected to launch next year, details other than that are rare.

Are you looking forward to re-living the Blitz in the new WWII game Enemy Front?
