It seems that these cribs pose a suffocation and strangulation hazard, so you should stop using them immediately.

The crib maker is to offer a replacement kit that has to be installed, this is all part of the recall agreement with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The total number of cribs affected by this latest recall is 635,000; the reason is because the drop-side can fail because it can become detached.

A toddler can become trapped, which could lead to suffocation or strangulation. According to the CPSC a 6-month child lost its life after becoming trapped and strangled due to the drop side failing. According to Dorel Asia, there have been 31 cases of the drop side failing, six children were entrapped; thankfully they only suffered minor bruising.

The Dorel Asia cribs affected by the recall are those sold at K-Mart, Sears and Wal-Mart from January 2005 through December 2009 and were manufactured in China and Vietnam.

Back in November, Stork Craft Manufacturing had to issue a recall of its drop-side cribs, now Dorel Distribution Canada announced the voluntary recall of about 7,600 drop-side cribs sold a is doing the same.

Those affected are the 3-in-1 Carlisle drop-side cribs finished in dark cherry and Tara cribs in white. According to montrealgazette.com, 7,600 of these cribs sold at Sears and other retail outlets since September 2006 are to be recalled.

This is just the latest recall as fears mount due to recent deaths caused by suffocation. Four children lost their lives due to this fault, with another three infants becoming trapped in the drop-side. The Stork Craft recall was a much larger one than Dorel Distribution Canada’s; 2.1 million were recalled back in November.

The reason for the recall is due to the fact that the drop-side can be installed incorrectly, often upside down. The result is broken plastic parts, which can often fall away. It is this what causes the drop-side to trap a child.
