Are you looking for a digital camera that’s designed to withstand the elements? If you are, then you may just like Ricoh’s recently unveiled PX digital compact camera. Not only can the Ricoh PX be used underwater to a depth of 3 meters (up to 1 hour), but it can also withstand drops from a height of 1.5 meters.

According to Chris Cheesman over at amateurphotographer.co.uk, the 16-megapixel Ricoh PX is powered by a DB-100 rechargeable battery and comes with a 2.7-inch transmissive LCD display and a 5x optical lens that is designed to deliver a 35mm format that is equivalent to a 28-140mm zoom.

It also features a 4.8x digital zoom for a combined zoom of 48x, a Smooth Imaging Engine IV processor, 720p HD video capture, face-priority multi AF and subject tracking AF. The Ricoh PX includes a number of different shooting options including continuous mode and group portrait auto release.

Meanwhile, the PX’s digital filter effects options include party, sports, miniaturize, toy camera, sepia and black & white. The camera comes with 40MB of internal memory, but also supports SD, SDHC and Eye-Fi cards. The Ricoh PX will be available in the UK as from next month, with a price tag of £179.99.

You can read more about the Ricoh PX via the amateurphotographer.co.uk link. Are you looking to buy a new digital camera?

We already discussed with you that Canon were updating their rebel DSLR range, well they are doing the same with their PowerShot compact models as well. The news model are the SX230 HS and the SX220 HS, the former offering built-in GPS – the first compact from the camera make to do so – and a choice of five different colors.

No longer will you have to use a separate geotag device, now the SX230 does it all for you; allowing you to tag your photos and upload them to Flickr and Picasa and Google Maps. HS means high sensitivity, so you know that Canon has made a number of improvements to its flagship compact.

Rival cameras like this offer 14x optical, so we were surprised when Crave reported that the SX230 only comes with 12x – maybe they thought that using too much zoom affects the quality of an image with a compact? Having said that, the 3-inch screen and Full HD 1080p video recording more than makes up for it.

Some of the key features include: 12.1-megapixel, 32 Smart Auto settings, High-speed burst, Manual Control, Waterproof Case and much more. Like the Rebel T3 and T3i, the PowerShot SX220 HS and SX230 will be released in March; although we have no idea of their price.

What Digital Camera has got up close and personal with the SX230, so is able to offer more insight into some of this latest technology that canon has packed in.

Does it matter that the Canon PowerShot SX230 only has a 12x optical zoom?

Some more new cameras have been announced with Nikon adding three new models to its Coolpix range. All three will support at least 720P HD video, and will be available this fall.

Christina Warren of Mashable is reporting that the new Nikon lineup will be focusing on quality instead of quantity, with better lens sensors preferred in place of a megapixel number.

The Coolpix S80 is a small touchscreen pocket camera with 14.1 megapixels. It has a 5x optical zoom and includes a HDMI-out for playback on a HDTV. This will be available for around $329.95.

The Coolpix P7000 is aimed at the top end of the compact market and features a wide angle lens with a 7.1x zoom. It has a number of automatic and manual settings and an ISO up to 6400, for great quality photos even in low light. This model will retail around $499.95.

Last but not least is the Coolpix S8100 which has a 12.1 megapixel backside illumination CMOS sensor. The camera is fast with 10fps and can record 1080p HD video, and will offer great pictures in really low light, with a purchase price of around $299.95.
