The rebirth of the Commodore 64 has been in the pipeline for a while now, but the retro computer is nearing release with the news that Commodore USA is now taking pre-orders for the unit.

The original Commodore 64 brings back many happy memories when I was a boy playing many games which were great fun. There were annoying problems though with games taking ages to load via tape (remember them) and sometimes crashing. Kevin Parrish from Tom’s Hardware is reporting the prices for the new version start at $250 up to $895.

This version of the 64 is not just a re-release of the original, as it has today’s technology packed inside the retro casing. Powering it is an Intel dual-core Atom 525 processor, 2 GB of DDR3 memory, and an optical drive.

It may not be up to playing some of today’s high end games, but it sure beats the days of the 8-bit computer from the 80s. At the launch the company talked about the original being launched the same time as the original Disney Tron movie.

This time round it is being launched the same time as Tron Legacy comes out on Blu-ray and DVD. There is even some advertising for the new unit on the new discs of the film. The new version of the 64 comes in five different models and is expected to start shipping from mid-May to the beginning of June.

All the models come with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS OS on a disc for users to install, and the Commodore OS 1.0 along with an emulator and classic game package will be provided when available. For more information and to pre-order head here.

Will you be ordering the Commodore 64?
