The PC version of Firaxis Games’ hugely popular turn-based strategy game Civilization V ( aka Civ 5) has received various patches / updates since it was first released back in September last year, which have included a number of different fixes and minor improvements, as well as some major alterations to the gameplay. Now we have just received word that another new PC update has gone live.

According to John Papadopoulos over on the dsogaming.com website, the latest update has improved the enemy AI, rebalanced the game in order to make the higher difficulty levels more challenging and includes a number of improvements to the game’s multiplayer mode. For example, players should now find that the multiplayer AI is consistent with the single player AI.

They should also discover that Hot Seat is now available through the multiplayer menu, and all maps – including user created and purchased maps – will be available to play in Hot Seat. The latest update has also added a combat preview for aircraft UI and fixed an aircraft UI bug that was causing Atomic Bombers and Nuclear Missiles to leave behind container UI after they were destroyed.

Another problem that’s been fixed is the aircraft UI issue that was causing the aircraft selection UI to duplicate itself when rebasing the aircraft. The latest update has also made it so that the AI will now recognize a gamer that captured their capital and remember when it has been nuked for permanent diplomatic penalties. AI players will now be able to use a Great General in early rushes on higher difficulties.

In terms of gameplay changes, players will now be given the option the return a CS worker that they have freed from the Barbarians, and roads under captured cities will no longer charge maintenance. The update has also fixed the Oligarchy bug, which was causing the effect to expire when players were loading from a save. The influence that you receive for killing a barbarian for a city state has now been increased from 5 to 12.

Unhappiness per city has also been increased from 2 to 3. Meanwhile, the Culture from Goody Huts has been reduced from 30 to 20. The new patch has also fixed a bug in Lua, where ‘Events…Remove’ was not working correctly. Action icons will now use the database in the same way as the other icons do, rather than using ActionIcons.lua. You can read more about the changes via dsogaming.com.

What do you think about all the changes that have been made with the latest update?

In a response to freezing issues, 2K Games has released its patch notes for an upcoming update, although they have yet to set a release date. The list of fixes is huge, although it needs to be in order to solve the constant problems with not only AI and UI but with gameplay as well.

We pointed to the fact that the patch notes is huge, but Alexander Sliwinski from Joystiq learned from 2K Games that this is only part of the updates. The ones that you can see in its entirety <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/14/civilization-5-patch-notes/#continued"">here is just those that the developers have been working on over the past few weeks – so we can expect much more once released.

The main areas where this current patch improves on are as follows: UI, Modding, Gameplay, AI, Multiplayer and Misc. So far there are 11 fixes for UI alone and just one for modding.

With Gameplay there are said to be 14 improvements and 9 with AI. Finally three fixes for Multiplayer and 10 for Miscellaneous. The list is so extensive that you will be better to read them all on Joystiq. If you think that there are some missing, then please let us know.

Ever since 2K Games launched its newest installment of the Civilization series – latest being “Civilization V” – we’ve been hearing about PC performance issues and problems such as the game freezing.

According to Stephen Johnson over at g4tv.com other problems that have been reported include an out of memory error, Civ 5 intro movie problems and the 5009 : 0x8000ffff error code.

However there are fixes for these problems, and the g4tv.com website has a few listed. For example, one easy step would be to make sure you have all the drivers updated.

As for the 5009 : 0x8000ffff error code, try and clean your temp folder first. If that fails to work you will then have to fix Corrupted Install Shield files.

You can do this by deleting or renaming the IsProBE.tlb file, which is found by going to C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Professional\RunTime, and try re-running the install.

To view more on the problems, tips and fixes, visit g4tv.com. Have you experienced any problems with Civilization 5 or discovered any fixes, if so what are they?

When it comes to gaming on a big scale, you need to forget about Halo: Reach or Call of Duty: Black Ops; Civilization V is where it is. I am not talking about sales or popularity here; I am talking about how much work has gone into this complex game. Steve Farrelly from AusGamers has spent some time with the new game from 2K Games and believes that it is the best yet.

In his review Farrelly covers all the bases, but one thing that we seem to have let pass us by is how demanding the graphics and other mechanics are on your PCs hardware. The further you progress in the game the more demand is placed on your system – so expect things to slow down.

Farrelly was running Civilization 5 on a PC with a Quad Core CPU and a GeForce 8800 graphics card. OK, so this is not the most powerful set-up, but is normally more than enough to run most games. He notes that if you are running 12 civilizations, then something has to give, for me that would have to be my patients.

Do not let a minor thing like this put you off though, Steve has given Civilization 5 a 9.2 out of 10. It will not matter if you are new or a veteran of the series, you will soon get the hang it and spend all your spare time transfixed on your PC.
