Depending on budget and taste the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Convertible has to be the best of the three because with the top down you will be able to hear those 650 horses of pure power, which is almost 100 horsepower more than the Camaro ZL1. All that power comes from the 5.8-liter V8 engine and has a supercharger thrown in for good measure, which ensures a smooth pickup in power when compared to a turbo.

Most convertibles add a little extra weight for more strength to the frame becasue it does not have a roof to make the car stiffer, thankfully there is a huge set of Brembo brakes and Bilstein shocks to handle the extra power from that engine all of which is channeled through an improved 6-speed manual transmission.

Next up we have the 2013 Chevrolet 427 Corvette 60th Anniversary Package, which we have to say looks awesome on its own but lacks the aggressive feel when parked next to the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Convertible. The 427 doesn’t have as much power as its rival but there’s still 505 hp on call for when you need it, all of which comes from a huge 7.0-liter V-8 LS7 engine but it’s those extra features that make this model very special.

The rear spoiler has been changed for this special edition, there is also gray brake calipers, limited edition wheel center caps and a diamond white leather for the interior. To us it doesn’t matter if the 2013 Chevrolet 427 Corvette 60th Anniversary Package has less power because it all becomes irrelevant once you reach a certain speed and your ears struggle to cope with the wind from not having a roof.

For those who would rather have a more practical drop top then maybe the 2012 Mazda Miata Special Edition is more for you, it’s not only much tamer but the price is more realistic as well. There is to be just 450 of these vehicles with a smaller 2.0-liter 167hp engine but what this lacks in power more than makes up for in handling and fun factor, which are two of the most important features of a car like this. Some of the main features are Bilstein shocks, sports suspension, LSD and a choice of two superb paint finishes. Looking at today’s schedule below we can see there is a lot to get through in 11 hours but it’s easy to see that there’s something for every taste, so if you like SUVs, muscle cars or listening to the awesome entertainment systems that will be in upcoming vehicles then today’s Chicago Auto Show has you covered.

We know you have different tastes when it comes to what is on offer at these shows but if we could pick just four events going on today at the auto show then we would have to pick:

The Annual Jeep Track where you get see how a Dodge/Jeep handles on an off-road circuit, which is where these vehicles were meant to be. A pro driver will put either the Jeep Wrangler or Dodge Ram through its paces, which we have to say will leave you wanting more and there’s nothing like having an SUV with a load of mud on it because that’s the way they are meant to be.

For those who care more for the environment then maybe you should head over to the Chevrolet Volt Ride & Drive Experience display, which is where you will get to learn more about the technology along with the benefits involved when owning one of these amazing vehicles. However, we do have to warn you the technology is still young and will be a few more years before vehicles like these will become more cost effective. If you are still interested then you may as well head over to the Nissan Leaf Ride & Drive display as well.

There are a number of drivers who would rather see cars that perform at their limits, so the Subaru Test Drive display in the South Hall could be perfect for you. We’ve seen them powering round racetracks and dirt roads so here’s your chance to see them up close and personal.

Whenever the first day of any auto event is out of the way, it is hard to decide which vehicle got the most positive reaction, which is why we have been looking around to see what some of the top auto blogs liked most. The first is from Autoblog, who we believe to be one of the best out there.

One off the first vehicles to get a mention was the 2012 Acura TL, which we already discussed. One point that we had to make was how strange the front looks. Other cars that Autoblog paid attention to were the 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1, 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 and the sexy looking Challenger Green with Envy; you can also read more on this when we previewed a few cars that will be shown at the event over the coming days.

UPI does not go into detail too much with the vehicles at the Chicago Auto Show, but what they do is show some of what we believe are the best photos. If you visit their website you will be met with a series of images, the first of which is the charging station for the Nissan Leaf, the second is the same but for the Chevy Volt instead.

The final website that offers detailed coverage is AutoWeek; not certain if they offer as much detail as Autoblog, but that is for you to decide.

The first model that we have for you is an update to the Dodge Challenger, which was recently voted at one of the most popular coupes. There are not many changes to this model, but it does come in Envy Green and will have two variants, one of which is a new R/T Classic. This comes with a 5.7-liter engine and can push out 372-horsepower. If you feel that more power is needed, then the Challenger SRT8 is the answer, as its 6.4-liter engine produces an amazing 470hp, more details here.

Chrysler will also be showing off the new 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8, and will be all about its engine. The 6.4-liter powerplant can produce 465 horsepower, and has a 0-60 time of just over four seconds and a top speed of 175mph. This car certainly means business; Autoblog has all the details.

The new Buick Regal will be on show as well, and will have its new eAssist system to show off. It is this technology that will allow the vehicle to achieve 26mpg city and 37 miles per gallon highway. AutoWeek has more on this.

There is no denying that the Chigago Auto Show will not be a patch on the recent New York Auto Show; it’s as if the top auto brands and press are waiting for the next big one, which will be at Geneva.
