Looking back at the recent bunch of e-readers such as Amazon’s Kindle, they use E-Ink displays. However looking over the concept designs that were on show at CES 2010, which came to a close yesterday, they will come with LCD screens. As this is the same displays used on notebooks PC Advisers asks if they can still be classed as e-readers.

If you were to ask an expert what they think is the point of an e-reader, chances are they will say that it is its display. We know that current models do not use backlit technology, instead choosing to try and copy what a normal newspaper looks like. Most would agree that this makes it much easier to read than a backlit LCD screen on a notebook, which are often way too bright.

While at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, PC Advisor saw a number of these new type e-Books, but none offered the same screen quality as the current batch. The problem is, these e-reader manufactures probably saw a rival offer an LCD alternative so thought that this will be the next evolution to the e-reader and thought they would follow suit.

If we were to define an e-reader, then it would fall into the category of an MID or table PC. However, those devices can display the same content, but the screen has not been optimized for the user to be able to read the content easily

However, we have to remember that CES is all about companies putting their latest ideas out there. They can gauge what sort of reaction the product gets, if negative then they will go back and have a re-think, let us hope that they do this with these latest e-readers.

For an in-depth look at this visit PC Advisor.

CES 2010 has been and gone and there are a number of things that we can take from the event, we know that the tablet PC will be big as well as 3D TV technology. Looking back a number of consumer electronic makers had these latest TVs on show, these range from Panasonic, JVC, Samsung amongst others.

We reported in a recent post that Panasonic were working on a range of HD 3-D enable TV’s, which is seen as the first major change since the launch of the flat panel TV. Sony are also interested in this new technology, which is being spurred on with new 3D movies hitting the cinema, such as Avatar.

Interactive TV Today has been taking a closer look at each 3D TV from the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show, where they have picked out eight companies to see what they will be offering in the coming year. CableLabs are to offer testing capabilities for 3D TV implementation over cable. These range from frame-compatible, spatial multiplexing solutions and much more.

Comcast announced at CES that they were to launch its VOD service, movies already expected to show up include “The Final Destination,” “My Bloody Valentine,” and many more. ESPN are to launch a 3D channel in June and will offer over 85 live events.

JVC has announced that they will launch a new IF-2D3D1 Stereoscopic Image Processor; this will convert 2D to 3D. This will make it much easier for 3D content producers to work with their archived 2D material.

For more details on all of this, visit Interactive TV Today.

CES 2010 is now behind us and there are many things that we can look forward to in the coming year. We know that Tablet PC devices and 3DTV’s will be big this year, but there are a host of new E-readers coming up as they have now been made popular by Amazon’s Kindle eBook reader.

The Money Times thought that they would look at four of the hottest E-readers to come from this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, these are Copia, Bookeen, Hanvon, and Jetbook. Their latest devices should prove popular when launched as they had big crowds at the show.

The first of the eBook readers to try and take the fight to the Kindle is the Plastic Logic Que e-reader. This device is aimed at the business user, which is reflected in its price, between $649 to $799. As this features plastic, it will not shatter like a glass version can. (Specs and release date)

The Hearst Corp. Skiff e-reader will be launched along with a store for offering digital newspaper and magazines subscriptions. The device itself has an 11.5-inch screen with the casing made from flexible metal.

The Spring Design’s e-reader Alex has a black-and-white screen and a 3.5-inch color screen. The larger screen is for reading while the smaller color screen is used for browsing the Internet.

The final device is the Entourage System edge E-reader; it comes with two screens that can fold up just like a book, one color the other black-and-white. The price for this will be $490.

Do you think any of these devices will be able to compete with the Amazon Kindle?

Looking back on CES 2010 the show was dominated not with one device like the Palm Pre last year, but with several items. These include eBook Readers, Netbooks and Tablets. There were a few surprises, we had hoped that Microsoft would launch the much-rumored Courier table device; instead they chose to put their weight behind the HP tablet PC.

eBook readers were slow to get of the ground in 2009, but 2010 will see this latest market shift into high gear, Amazon’s Kindle readers is the one to beat at this moment in time. There are a few that will be able to compete and blow the Kindle out of the water, such as the Plastic Logic QUE eBook reader, but its $649 and $799 price will hurt it hard.

The tablet market is set to dominate 2010, taking over the netbook, which was big in 2009. Many companies want in on the action, Nvidia are to launch its Next Generation Tegra. According to Foxbusiness.com, these have been designed to work perfectly in tablet PC’s, Nvidia and Verizon are reportedly working on a tablet device, not much is known at this moment.

A number of computer makers also decided to show off new netbooks, but do not expect anything new for 2010, well maybe an upgrade when the next-generation Intel Atom processor gets launched.

CES 2010 was not just about computer devices; 3D TV’s played a big part at the show as well, which you can read more about in our recent post.

So were you happy with CES 2010 or disappointed?

We have some good news for fans of the Sony Cybershot camera series now, as the company has unveiled a new model at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Yesterday saw the start of the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show 2009 in Las Vegas, a host of companies were on hand to begin showing off what they have planned for the next 12 months. These companies have been working hard to insure that they offer us the latest in technology, with some standing out more than others.

CES 2010 is not be about one device like last year with the Palm Pre, instead a host of new gadgets will be the trend, such as 3DTV, Tablet PCs and more. We have already seen that 2010 will see more devices connecting to the Internet this year, such as further advancements to the Ford Sync system, allowing for connections to Twitter.

A host of new Blu-ray players will offer Netflix streaming, which we covered in a recent post. Dell has launched the world’s smallest gaming laptop, the Alienware M11; we have more details of this here. Dell also announced the launch of their 5-inch Android Tablet, which you can read more on here.

We had hoped to see the Microsoft Courier, but the software giant decided to put its might behind a HP tablet PC instead. None of that will matter if Apple announces the launch of their tablet device later this month.

These are just a few of the new devices that were on show at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show; view all the latest news from the event.

It is going to be a good year for Netflix going by what we have seen at CES 2010. The online streaming service announced yesterday that they are to partner with Funai, Panasonic, Sanyo, Sharp and Toshiba to offer Blu-ray players and TVs capable of streaming content from Netflix.

This latest agreement is just the latest partnership with consumer electronic companies; Insignia, LG Electronics, Samsung and Sony already offer this same service. According to Engadget, Philips is to offer Netflix content on three new Blu-ray players, the BDP5110, BDP5320 and the BDP7320

The 5110 will be available soon and will cost $169, the BDP5320 is a higher end model complete with Wi-Fi dongle, and the cost is $249. The top of the range BDP7320 will come with DLNA access, allowing you to stream video content from devices connected to your network.

The two models being released by Sharp are the BD-HP70U and BD-HP24, neither model has unique features so will have to hope that their price will persuade consumers to purchase them.

For full details of both these Sharp Blu-ray players with Netflix built in visit Cnet.

When we learned that Monster were to team up with Lady Gaga and Beats by Dr. Dre, you knew that we were in for a treat. At the start of the CES 2010 event yesterday a set of new headphones was launched the Special Edition Beats Solo Headphones. What makes them even better is the fact that $5 from each pair sold will go to the Global AIDS fund.

Whenever a consumer electronics maker produces a red version of their device, most offer money to the AIDS fund, such as the Red iPod Nano. These limited edition headphones still offer superb sound quality, capturing all the sonic detail in the music, just how you were meant to hear it.

Most headphones on the market are unable to reproduce the rich and full sound of most digital music tracks, but Beats by Dr. Dre have been able to do just that. These latest headphones have been designed for those who live an active lifestyle and being compact makes it easier to carry around with you.

These Special Edition Beats Solo Headphones comes packed with a host of features, such as Monster’s “ControlTalk,” this offers the users full control while listing to music on their Apple iPhone 3GS, and most iPod devices. The headphone cable even comes with an in-line mic allowing you to answer calls.

The Special Edition Beats Solo Headphones in conjunction with Monster will cost $229.95 when released in the early part of February.

We have discussed on a number of occasions that this year will be all about the tablet PC, and this was evident at yesterdays CES 2010 event. There were three big announcements made yesterday from HP, Lenovo and Sony, with Microsoft backing the Hewlett Packard model.

2009 was all about the netbook, it just shoes how fast trends in technology change in just one year, but are we truly ready for the big onslaught of the tablet PC this year? Most computer makers will be coming out with some sort of tablet device this year, some just an eBook reader and some a portable computer, mixed between a smartphone and a netbook.

Three main models were on show yesterday, but would any of us pay any attention to them if and when Apple announce the launch of their slate device, maybe at their January 26 or 27 event? PC World has said something very interesting, they say that companies are not making their computers better anymore, instead they choose to sell better devices, netbooks in 2009 and Tablet’s in 2010.

HP has yet to name their Multitouch tablet device, but was seen as the star of the Consumer Electronics Show, this has something to do with Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer putting his weight behind the device at his Keynote speech. The announcement was seen as an anticlimax though, as it was not the rumored Microsoft “Courier” tablet that was rumored.

The Lenovo Ideapad U1 is a sort of hybrid device, as it is a cross between a tablet and a laptop, but with its great specs is sure to do well. The Sony Dash Mobile Internet Device does no have a name yet but you know that the tablet will be something special with Sony behind it. They could add a twist and make it possible to play PSP or PS3 games on it, now how cool would that be?

Microsoft are to begin their keynote speech at CES 2010 tomorrow, with many believing that Steve Ballmer will announce the Microsoft Courier Tablet, which is being made by HP. The Consumer Electronics Show will no doubt show off a range of new tablet devices by other vendors in the coming days.

Microsoft are not giving anything away, they might not even launch their tablet tomorrow. If they do, then they will beat Apple to it, as they are not due to announce the launch of their tablet until the end of the month. So what is known so far about the Courier?

According to Techtree, the Hewlett Packard built tablet will come with multitouch features and will be more like an eBook reader, which could hurt the device as the rumored Apple Tablet will blow it out of the water on features and looks. However, with HP working on the device we do expect to see something better than average.

There are no details on what size the Microsoft Courier will be and what specs and features it will come with, hopefully we will learn all that information at tomorrows keynote.

If they were to announce a launch at CES 2010 tomorrow, will you purchase the Microsoft or Apple tablet?
