Previous reports of delays and missed release dates had made the Motorola Razr a smartphone we thought we might never see. No official release date was ever announced but we can now tell you that the illusive device now available in the UK and where to go if you’re interested in owning one.

As Gary Johnson explained to you in a previous article, online retailer Clove had reported that the Razr would get over a week’s delay after it was announced to be available November 1st, with no reason as to why it was delayed. Today Motorola revealed the places in the UK where you can pick up the super thin smartphone; they are Amazon, Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U.

When it comes to the best place to get the Razr the prices do not differ significantly. Both Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U are offering the smartphone for the very reasonable price of £31 per month on a two year contract. For those that would prefer to buy the Razr outright Amazon is offering it for £448.99.

As a reminder of what you get for your money with the Motorola Razr here is a list of some of its key features. It packs a 4.3” Super AMOLED screen, runs Android 2.3, has an 8 megapixel camera on the rear, a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB storage and its thin exterior is made from Kevlar fiber making it very tough and is just 7.1mm thick. For a review of the new Motorola Razr, head on over to TechRadar where you will find a video clip. There is also a hands-on review of the device available there.

What do you think of the Motorola Razr? Is it a smartphone you are interested in owning?

Back in June we had reports that Best Buy was losing millions in the UK, and were looking to make big changes to turn things round. But now we have the sad news that Best Buy UK stores are set to close for the last time in the country.

The joint venture between the Carphone Warehouse and US retailer Best Buy will come to an end with the closure of eleven stores by the end of this year. An official statement by the Carphone Warehouse announced the news this morning, and could result in over 1,000 job losses.

It now plans to concentrate on its smaller Carphone Warehouse stores after it closes its Best Buy branded large retail outlets. This comes after the company reported loss of £62 million in its first year of trading in the country.

In the statement the company said the stores had achieved good customer feedback since launching in April 2010. Consumers in the country have been feeling the pinch recently and cutting back on spending on items such as the ones that Best Buy sells. The company now plans to consult with employees over the store closures with the intention to close all by the end of 2011, and hopes to redeploy as many as possible to other parts of the company.

It is likely the company will use the busy Christmas period to sell off stock, but the news will come to a shock to staff that will now face an uncertain future. The Carphone Warehouse has also announced an end in its interest in buying a share of Best Buy Mobile US arm.

Does the closure of the Best Buy stores come as a shock to you?

3D technology is all around us nowadays, yet there are very few smartphones that feature the 3D support available on the market. The gaming market seems to be taking full advantage of the new dimension, with the release of the Nintendo 3DS but so far only the only smartphone to be 3D enabled and available in the UK is the LG Optimus 3D. This won’t be the case for long it seems as the HTC EVO 3D has just gone up for pre-order at the Carphone Warehouse.

The device has a passive 3D screen and is capable of video-recording in 3D. the HTC EVO 3D is one of several high quality smartphones which are due for release next month and can reportedly be purchased now for £36 a month with a 2 year contract or can be bought outright, though it has a fairly expensive price at £599.

The EVO 3D is the first handset from HTC of the 3D variety. The company will be hoping to make more of an impact with it than the LG has with the Optimus 3D, because being as disappointing as it has with complaints over appalling battery life and being the only 3D smartphone released in the UK so far, it’s not giving the technology the justice it deserves.

For those that are not familiar with the EVO 3D, here’s a reminder of what the pre-order will get you. Firstly it has a large 4.3” display making it ideal for watching those 3D video-recordings, movies and other supported content and a resolution of 540 x 960. Also with the 3D support aside it is still a very powerful device with 1GB RAM and speedy 1.2GHz processor.

What sort of an impact do you think this device will have on the smartphone market? Will you be pre-ordering it?

As you may already know the LG Optimus 3D is finally on sale here in the UK. Not only is the world’s first 3D smartphone being offered up by various retailers with monthly contracts but it is also available sim-free at a number of stores too. The hotly anticipated device has been featured in quite a few of our articles here at Product Reviews so far.

Back in May we provided you with news of contract prices on offer from some of the stores that are selling the Optimus 3D. One of the stores included was BuyMobilePhones.com, who was offering the device up for pre-order on four major UK carriers including Vodafone, T-Mobile, O2 and Orange, from £25.54 a month on a 2 year contract.

The carriers themselves each offer the device for no less than £30 a month. Clove.co.uk was another store that is offering the 3D smartphone, but they have it available sim-free for £454 as long as you’re willing to wait until July 9th. Amazon is also offering the device sim-free, although it is slightly more expensive at £459 and won’t be available until July 21st.

According to The Inquirer Carphone Warehouse has the LG Optimus 3D on sale now for £499.95 sim-free and when ordered online will be with you by July 7th. The store also offers the handset on contract with the UK carriers from $35 a month. Unfortunately there is still no word as to when the 3D delight will be available to our neighbors in the US.

The LG Optimus 3D is not only the first available 3D smartphone on the market but it is also the first glasses-free version. Another device that will be providing the people the 3D features without the need for glasses is the HTC EVO 3D. We recently brought you an article which featured a video comparison of the two devices in order to establish which the better option is. Both are very similar and the EVO 3D is also expected this month.

Here is a quick reminder of what the Optimus 3D features are; apart from the obvious stereoscopic 3D display which is 4.3” it is also packing a 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor, 8GB storage, Android 2.2 Froyo and dual 5MP cameras. Check out the Carphone Warehouse website to order yours now. Will you be getting an LG Optimus 3D?

Best Buy launched in the UK to much fanfare and promised to change the way British consumers shop for electronics. Now we have news that Best Buy is losing millions in the UK, and changes are needed.

The company is in a joint venture with the Carphone Warehouse, and has seen the cost of trying to get a foot hold in the UK an expensive one. It has been announced that in its first year the group lost £62.2m according to an article on What Hi-Fi Sound and Vision.

At the end of the last financial year there were only six Best Buy stores open in the country, and has spent a great deal in setting up plans for a bigger number in future expansion. The group now has ten stores trading with another opening soon. But now the company has put a brake on plans to have up to eighty more stores.

There is also talk the company is thinking of scaling back its current stores, and looking at different store formats. If the company does start shutting stores it won’t be the first time as it recently shut stores in China and Turkey.

In the UK Best Buy biggest rivals are the likes of Curry’s and Comets, who themselves have seen sales drop off with the current financial climate. Many consumers now turn to the internet when buying electronics goods, as they can be cheaper and even have free delivery.

But having smaller more personal stores could be a good thing; many high end Hi-Fi dealers may not have the cheapest prices, but go that extra mile with customer service. Many independent retailers can offer auditions for equipment with knowledgeable advice with set up, and after sales support.

Do you prefer the stack them high sell them cheap approach? Or do you like to get advice and after sales care when buying tech?

More and more people are buying higher end smartphones such as the iPhone 4 and the Samsung Galaxy S II these days, but if you are looking to buy a starter handset for your children perhaps, then a cheap touch-screen feature phone is probably the best option.

This is where Motorola can possibly help, as they have just announced a new touch-screen feature phone called the Wilder. According to Dan Seifert over at mobileburn.com, the Wilder comes with a splash and dust resistant design and extensive social networking integration.

The Wilder features a 2.8-inch QVGA resistive touch-screen display with a resolution of 240 x 320, a single-line secondary display that shows you the time, signal strength, battery life and incoming notifications and a 2-megapixel camera with video capture capabilities.

It also comes with an FM radio and MP3 player built-in and a 910mAh battery that provides around 9.6 hours of talk time and 10.6 days of standby time. The built-in storage on the Motorola Wilder may only be a paltry 5MB, but it does include a microSD card slot that supports cards up to 32GB.

The Motorola Wilder handset features integration with MySpace, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, and comes pre-loaded with a number of apps including Need for Speed, Game of Life, Tetris and SoundHound. The Wilder will be available from Carphone Warehouse sometime in July, for £49.95.

According to an article by Desire Athow over on the itproportal.com website, Carphone Warehouse has now begun taking pre-orders for the HTC Sensation, with the release date down as June 20th. The handset is available for free from Orange when you sign a £40 a month, two-year contract.

Carphone Warehouse is launching an unlimited data plan for £12 per month on various smartphones, including the HTC Wildfire. Carphone Warehouse have said that users will ‘never pay for the internet’ on its Talkmobile virtual network.

Patrick Goss of TechRadar is reporting that a new mobile phone is part of the contract being made available from April 6th to May 4th, from a range of thirty handsets. This includes the HTC Wildfire on the £12 monthly contract, Sony Ericsson Xperia for £30 and the INQ Cloud for £18 per month.

Carphone Warehouse insists the next best unlimited data plan on a similar handset would cost £360 more in the UK, using the example of the two year contract on the HTC Wildfire. UK Trading Director at The Carphone Warehouse, Mark Eastham, said that “when we say unlimited internet access we really mean it”

There is a choice of thirty smartphones available when contracted to various affordable tariffs. Carphone Warehouses Talkmobile service will be using the Vodafone infrastructure, and the mobile retailer hopes its new service will further boost its user base.

Do you think Carphone Warehouse’s new unlimited data plan is good value?

For those of you who have been holding out and waiting for the Motorola Xoom to become available, we have some exciting news. Having already brought you news surrounding rumors of the tablet’s UK release and where you can possibly buy it, we are now able to confirm that as from next week the Xoom will be on sale in the UK.

The news we have previously provided gave a good indication of when the tablet would be available and was even accurate with stating which stores would have the Xoom for sale. The following are some of the retailers that are now confirmed to be selling the tablet next week; Carphone Warehouse, PC World and Currys and Dixons.

Although no specific day of availability has been confirmed an article at Engadget claims Motorola has said its tablet will be on sale next week. Also with no price confirmation we are only able to provide you with speculative prices.

The 3G model is rumored to cost in the region of £600 and the Wi-Fi model to cost around £500. We will have to wait until release day to find out which model or if both will be on sale. More details can be found at Engadget by clicking the link above.

Are you looking forward to seeing the world’s first Honeycomb Tablet? Will you be getting one? Let us know in the comments below.
