It’s a bad day if you are the owner of a German built car because both Porsche and BMW have announced a recall of some of their vehicles over potential problems. The former are recalling the 2012 911 Carrera S while the latter is having to recall the 2003 and 2010 BMW 5 and 6 series.

The issue with the 911 is because there could be interference with the coolant and fuel line, which in some cases could mean that the fuel line could become disconnected to the connector, if this happens then fuel could leak causing a misfire or in some cases the car could stall, which could be dangerous in certain situations and could even catch fire.

Those who have affected vehicles will be notified by Porsche and have their car booked in to be repaired for free, this should begin in April. For those who fear they have an affected model should contact Porsche on 1-800-767-7243. More details can be found by visiting the NHTSA website.

As for BMW the issue is much worse because there are 1.3 million vehicles being recalled due to a potential issue with the battery-cable cover, we are told that this is one of the largest recalls for the German automaker. There are cases where the cable cover that is inside the trunk/boot could be fitted incorrectly, if this is the case then there could be a failure with the electrical system, which could lead to a possible fire risk.

BMW 5 and 6 Series built between 2003 and 2010 could be affected so you are advised to contact your local dealer or customer service in your region; thankfully there have been no reports of injury. Those affected by the recall will be notified by BMW soon and the free fix will only take 30 minutes to resolve. Again more details on this recall can be found by heading over to the WSJ.

Honda is back in the news again and not for the right reasons, it seems that their recall lists is ever growing because the 2008/2009 Odyssey minivans and ATVs have issues with their rear doors and upper suspension arm. According to reports the gas-powered struts that help to keep the power tailgate in position could in some cases fail, which may cause a serious injury.

The recall was announced today and will include the 2008 and 2009 model with 45,000 vehicles in total, the models in the list are the Odyssey EX-L and Touring vans. Owners of the affected vehicles will begin to receive notification from March 13, which does seem a little too long to wait for those who are now worried their support rods on their tailgate could fail.

The risk could be serious because if the tailgate does come down on someone’s head it could cause an injury, without these struts taking the weight of the tailgate they are very heavy and will fall with a great amount of force.

According to a recent article there have been two incidents where injuries have occurred, thankfully both were not serious. Honda reports that this is a manufacturing flaw where gas can leak from the struts, so you are advised to be careful if you have reason to believe you have an Odyssey minivan that could be affected by this recall.

Once Honda put the recall into effect owners can check out recalls.honda.com or call (800) 999-1009 and select option 4. If your vehicle has been identified as a faulty model then all you need to do is visit your local Honda garage to get the problem fixed for free. The Odyssey has been involved in two recalls in the past couple of years one in 2010 and another in 2011, the former was for a braking issue (see video below) and the second for windshield wiper issues.

As for the ATVs the list of VIN models can be seen in an article here, which is the two-wheeled drive 2012 Honda FourTrax Rancher. There have been four incidents involving the weld failures on the suspension arm, there have not been any serious injuries expect for a sprained wrist. It’s good news to hear this but we cannot help but fear something worse could happen if action was not taken; you are advised to visit this website or call (866) 784-1870.

We need to stress that a recall for the 06-07 Chevrolet TrailBlazer has not been issued yet but it’s a huge concern for GM, as if an issue is found it could also affect three of their other models. The NHTSA has received several complaints that suggest there have been door fires in these vehicles and as a result could possible affect 309,000 of these SUVs.

A total of 12 complaints have been received with concerns regarding the power window switches and other related parts, It has been reported that there have been a few fires or smoke inside select TrailBlazer models, thankfully there hasn’t been any injuries.

This is the same issue that has affected 830,000 Toyota Camry and RAV4 vehicles, it’s not as strange as you think because both companies sourced the parts from the same supplier and if NHTSA find a link then there is a fear that this could become a widespread recall.

From what we already know the Buick Rainier, GMC Envoy and the Saab 9-7X share the same power window switch, and while there is nothing owners of these vehicles can do for now, we would advise you to be extra vigilant and if there are any signs of smoke then you need to get in contact with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration right away.

It’s hard to say how long this investigation will go on for, but owners of the affected Chevrolet TrailBlazers will be waiting patiently for the verdict, as will we. If you do have any worries or experience issues with one of these models then contact your local dealer, but maybe you should consider disconnecting the battery first.

There seems to be some confusion as to who the issue is down to because we have heard a few people suggesting Toyota is to blame, but it’s too early to start pointing fingers. The best course of action is to wait until the inquiry is over before we make any assumptions, but it’s certainly worrying and just highlights the fact that vehicles of today are more about quantity and not quality.

Looking over some of the cases we were worried to learn that when a fire did occur the engine was off and the vehicle was left unattended, now could you imagine if you left the vehicle at the parking lot or in the garage where it could not only set another vehicle on fire but also your home while you are asleep?

We are sorry to be so harsh, but you have to consider how series this issue could be. Have you experienced any issue with your 2006-2007 Chevrolet TrailBlazer?

Owners of Nissan’s SUV and pickup trucks are left a little confused as to why the automaker has only extended warranty for radiators because they have been leading to automatic transmission failures. They had assumed that a recall was more appropriate, seeing as though the coolant can leak and effect the transmission, which is said to have cost owners thousands of dollars in repair bills.

The reason for this is because the warranty only covers vehicles with 80,000 miles or less, which seems a little strange, as these vehicles are workhorses and will have a great number of miles on the clock. When owners purchased these SUV’s and pickups they had no idea that this radiator would affect more than that, NY Times says that owners feel as though Nissan should have warned them of this problem.

The most responsible thing that Nissan can do now is to issue a recall of their Frontiers, Pathfinders and Xterras from 2005-2010, as there are many cases where owners do not know about this extended warranty, and also the fact that some of these vehicles have far more than 80,000 miles. It is all very well Nissan saying that they will cover the repair bills that was a cause of the coolant leaks, but what is the point if they do not know about it, and that is comes with restrictions?

You may wonder how the coolant can get into the transmission; well the tank will crack and force the coolant into the transmission cooler lines. Now something like this should not be covered under warranty, there should be a recall, as there is certainly a fault somewhere – surly it will be cheaper in the long run to repair a radiator rather than a transmission?

Should Nissan issue a recall or do you still think that the extended warranty is enough?

Ford are not having a good couple of weeks, back towards the end of July the car maker had to recall a number of sedans and trucks, and now they have now issued a another truck recall. It seems as though 2011 has got very bad for Ford all of a sudden, because this recall affects 1.22 million of their pickups. The list of models affects both Canada and the US, and is due to an issue with the fuel tank.

The worrying part of this recall is just how dangerous it is, because there is a fear that the fuel tank could drop because of corroding straps, which could then cause a fire. The recall could have been much worse, as the NHTSA were looking into an issue with 2.7 million trucks, but for now only issued the recall for 1.1 million of these vehicles. However, Ford has not been let off the hook, as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is still investigating the other 1.6 million pickups.

This latest recall will now take Ford’s total 2011 recall figure to almost 3 million, which dwarfs 570,000 from last year. The Detroit News said that the NHTSA has received a total of 243 reports regarding the fuel tank on these vehicles, saying that they just dropped away. There were leakages, and a few where the tank was being dragged along the ground, which caused sparks. There was even one case where a truck caught alight and engulfed the vehicle.

The list of vehicles affected by this recall is as follows: F-150 from 1997-2003, F-150 Heritage, 2004 model, F-250 from 1997-1999, and finally the Lincoln Blackwood pickup from 2002-2003. Owners of these vehicles will be notified by Ford in mid-September, you will then be advised to take your affected truck to your local Ford dealer so that they can carry out the necessary repairs.

2009 and 2010 was seen as a great year for Ford, not only were they able to not lend money from the US government, they have also had great success in the US with their range of smaller cars. For years it has been all about size, so nice to see that American drivers have now seen that there is more to cars than just horsepower. However, the company still has a cloud hanging over their neck, due to a number of other possible recalls coming in 2011.

These July 2011 product recalls range from children’s gear to vehicles, with a few food products, such as meat thrown into the mix as well. Those that we will roundup today include the “Evergreen Fresh Sprouts, ” “Starbucks Bistro Box,” and also “Autos.” Some stand out more than others, but we have not come to accept these monthly occurrences as a part of life.

Let’s look first at the Evergreen Fresh Sprouts recall, which took place at the very beginning of the month due to a fear of Salmonella contamination. There was said to have been an outbreak of Salmonella, which affects young children and elderly more than healthy adults. For the latter the symptoms will be a high fever abdominal pain and vomiting. For more details on this please visit CDC.

Coffee chain Starbucks had to issue a recall of their Bistro Box on July 26, 2011, this was after their recent Chicken Wraps recall on July 19. Lawrenceville Flying Food Group produced the affected food products; Starbucks has since destroyed these food products. We have to stress that this only took place in Alabama and Georgia, so do not worry if you live in Seattle or New York. So far there has not been any reported illness due to the meat-based recall. Visit Starbucks for more information.

Product recalls that involves children were not as high as we have seen in recent months, but even one is too many in our eyes. Target had to issue a recall for the Circo Children’s Task Lamps, as there were concerns that they children could not only lacerate themselves, but there was also a fire risk as well. ConsumerReports has more on this.

Phil&Teds USA Inc had to issue a recall for their Explorer and Hammerhead Strollers, which was built from August 2010 to June 2011. There is an issue with the brake mechanism, which might fail and we cannot even imagine the harm that this could cause to children. If you fear that you are affected by this recall then please visit philandteds.com.

Fisher-Price Toys have not let us down, as they have had to issue yet another recall – although not on the same scale as we have seen in recent times. This latest one involves their Little People Builders’ Load ‘n Go Wagon built from July 2010 to 2011. There is a fear that the plastic handle could lacerate a child if he/she fell on it. You are advised to visit service.mattel.com for details on your free repair kit.

July has been a quiet month for car recalls, the most recent being the steering issue with the Volvo S80 built from March 8, 2006, to May 16, 2007. There are just 8,400 cars affected; you are advised to call Volvo on 1-201-768-7300. If you feel you might have a faulty model.

Ford also had to recall a number of their sedans and trucks, which we covered earlier this month. You can find more of the most recent car recalls here.

There was our list of just handful of the product recalls for the month of July, but worryingly there were many more.

There have been two Ford recalls in the month of July, and they have both happened within days of each other. In this roundup we look at the reason behind each recall and what the Detroit automaker is doing to rectify the issues. This is not a great start for Ford, and they just hope that more will not follow in the final week of July.

The first recall involves the Ford Mercury Montego and Five Hundred due to an issue with their fuel tank, which in some cases could leak and cause a fire. There are only 2,945 affected by this recall, but do not be put off by this relatively small recall, as it is very serious – anything that has the fear of fire is always a series issue.

The affected sedans were built from September 5th, 2006 to September 11th of the same year. WSJ Blog says that the welds on these tanks are inconsistent, and as a result are not as strong as they should be. If the car was to have an impact of some sort, then the welds could fail and cause a fuel leak. Owners affected by this are advised to contact Ford’s customer service center at 866-436-7332. The recall is expected to begin on August 15, 2011.

The second recall involves three trucks, the Ford E-Series, Excursion and Ranger. There are 26,000 covered in this recall, which is due to faulty taillights. The brake, hazard warning and signal lights all have defects and involves models that were made during different dates for each model.

The dates of these affected models are as follows: The Ford Ranger from January to April 2011, Excursion from 2004 to 2011, and the Excursion from 2002 to 2005. We do not have any dates for the F-250, F-350, F-450 and the F-550, so you had best contact that same phone number above for more details. The funny thing is, this recall will also take place on August 15th. It was back in May when the Ford F150 last faced a recall, which was due to a risk of fire.

The reason for the faulty taillight is due to a defective multi-function switch, which in some cases has a deformed slider. The result will be all of the taillights to stop working, which could cause you to get rear-ended.

When the vehicles go in for the recall these switches will be replaced at no cost to you, and should not take that long at all.
Are we now at a stage where the car you buy today will be almost certainly to be recalled in the future?

It wouldn’t be normal lately for a week to go by without something being recalled due to a manufacturing default. We always seem to get a lot of car manufacturers recalling their vehicles for one thing or another. Only last month we told you about eleven Chrysler vehicles which were the subject of a recall. Now today we have news of over 240,000 Chrysler Ram pickups being recalled, and we have a list of the models affected.

An article over at The New York Times by Christopher Jensen, is reporting that the Chrysler Group is recalling just shy of 243,000 of its Ram pickup trucks. The Ram pickup is the biggest selling vehicle for the company, and the recall is down to a faulty steering linkage.

The problem can occur during low speed maneuvering such as parking, and the linkage may break and result in a loss of steering control to the left front wheel. The list of models affected includes the 2008 Chrysler Ram 1500 Mega Cab 4 x4, also the 2500 and 3500 heavy duty models which were made between 2003 and 2011.

Most of the pickups affected, around 168,000 are from the 2008 through to 2011 model years. Back on the 6th of this month the company used a letter to post on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about the problem. It has been put down to a tie-rod fracturing, which is caused by “a weakening of the ball stud”.

A Chrysler spokesman said there have been a few minor incidents and one injury reported. Last year the company recalled around 15,000 of its 4500 and 5500 Ram pickups because of the same problem. The recall is voluntary, but the compnay had to inform the NHTSA of its decision to ovoid civil penalties.

Dealers will inspect the affected vehicles and replace the faulty part and align the wheels if needed. The company hasn’t yet decided when it will contact owners, but you can contact them yourself on 1-800-853-1403. Alternatively owners can contact the NHTSA on 1-888-327-4236.

Do you have one of the Chrysler Ram pickups affected by the recall?

Today there is a Toyota recall notice for 82,200 Lexus 2006/2007 hybrid models due to an issue with their electronics. This is yet another blow for the Japanese automaker, as they seem to be hit most by these recalls. Having said that, this pales in comparison to some of their other more notable ones.

From the 82.200 2006 and 2007 models there are 45,500 Highlander SUVs and 36,700 Lexus RX 400h vehicles affected. The recall only affects these models in the US only. The recall has not begun yet, but there is notice that one is imminent. The reason for the delay is due to the fact that Toyota does not have enough spare parts to resolve the issue.

The main reason for this is due to the fact that these parts companies are still trying to get back to normal following the natural disaster that hit Japan earlier this year. According to WSJ the issue lies in the Intelligent Power Module, this is the main system that controls both the electric power and the standard gasoline engine.

There is said to be a manufacturing fault, as some of the circuits were not soldered correctly. If the solder fails and becomes hot then the car could go into safe mode – something that we do not envy if traveling in the fast lane on the highway. However, in a worse case scenario a fuse could blow, which means that the SUV would stop suddenly.

Like some of the most recent car recalls, such as the Porsche 911 one or the Mazda 3 and MazdaSpeed 3 this one will see a recall begin in July – it seems as though this will be the magic month. Well we say begin, this will be when owners start to receive their notices about their appointments for this issue to be resolved.

When you consider how complex the hybrid drive-train system is, it is a wonder why there has not been a recall to affect this before. Seems funny how most of the recalls that affect cars are due to things that have been around for a long time.

This recall is bad timing, especially as Lexus has just topped a recent J.D. Power and Associates survey for safety. Granted it is not for the models affected by the recall above, but still a funny coincidence. Just when you think Toyota has overcome its issues with recalls, recession and the earthquake and tsunami then something else comes up. However, let’s face facts here, this is not going to be the last recall from the carmaker, or any other brand come to that.

We are now into the second part of this year and already there have been far more car recalls than we would have hoped. The latest is the Mazda 3 recall and affects 103,300 models in 2011, as well as the Mazdaspeed 3. The models affected are those with the year 2008-09, which both have an issue with their windshield wipers.

We are hearing that in some cases they will not work. Now some of you may think that this is not as dangerous as some of the other recalls that have taken place this year, but just imagine that you are traveling at speed on the highway and it starts to rain? What would happen if your windshield wipers would not come on, it would not be long before you find yourself in a nasty accident.

The 103,300 models affected is U.S. only, but globally the recall will affect 494,500 of these Japanese vehicles. Inside Line has learned from the NHTSA that Mazda will begin the recall on July 15, which will see the automaker fix the problem for free. To solve the issue all dealers need to do is add another ground harness on the wiper, as the current one may have been bent during installation.

OK, so we know that it is good that Mazda will resolve the issue for free, but is this really enough for drivers. Too many times have we had to put up with recalls of this nature, and we just have to go with it. The carmakers do not seem to understand that we have far more important things to do in your lives than head over to our car dealer to solve an issue due to incompetence.

It does seem that recalls of this nature is now becoming far more regular, or is it the fact that there is increased media coverage since the whole Toyota saga? When it comes to car recalls the Toyota pedal and brake issue makes others pale in comparison.

Some of the most recent recalls include a host of Chrysler models due to a steering wheel issue, an expanded Honda recall, as well as the Infiniti QX4 & Pathfinder and Ford F-150 trucks. The worrying this is, all these have happened within four months of each other. Going back to that Toyota recall that affected 12 million vehicles, the Japanese automaker recently one their case, which will certainly anger many owners. Why do you think there are more car recalls now, do you think that the likes of Honda, Toyota, GM, Ford etc are putting more importance on profit and not quality?
