The BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has not only affected the creatures that live in the sea but also those whose livelihoods is controlled by the seas – such as fisherman, and tourist areas next to beaches. BP has tried a number of ways to try and stop the flow of oil spewing out of the broken pipe, but now it is time to try some new technology.

Kevin Costner, the Hollywood star has been to congress to talk about the technology that he has pumped $20 million into, saying that it could be used to help separate oil from water. Costner has been working in this new system since the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill, and now thinks that CINC is the answer.

The star said that this is a very effective tool when it comes to cleaning up oil spills like this one. The tool is small so that it can be used on a small watercraft, but it is also tough to withstand what the rough seas can throw at it.

AFP reports that BP has tested out this new technology and is almost ready to place orders, which must make Costner very happy. It is certainly nice to see that a Hollywood star is prepared to go out of his way to help our planet – just wish more of them were like that.

We all know how much of an environmental disaster the oil spill is in the Gulf of Mexico; in a strange move BP has purchased all of the search phrases from the three big search engines – Bing, Google and Yahoo.

This is a very shrewd move, one that could help the company get back some of the money that it is losing each day.

If you or I did a search on oil spill to get the latest information, then the chances are the official website of BP will come up. This is nothing new as a number of other companies either do this or have done it in the past. We wonder if BP will see any return on its investment?

Michael Graham Richard from TreeHugger learned from ABC News that BP have done this in the hope that those searching via these top search engines will be able to get all the latest information on the efforts that BP is making to try and stop the flow of oil from the seabed.

We have to wonder if BP really has our best interest at heart?

There are three iPhone apps to choose from, two of which are free. The free ones are Oil Spill Response and Oil Reporter, to find out more about these applications and to download them to your iPhone simply click on their names, both apps are primarily used for reporting your position if you spot oil contamination.

There is also a premium app which you can purchase, this app costs just $0.99 and is called BP Oil Spill, this app gives you a more in-depth look into the spill, including statistics and visual representations of the oil spill.

For Android there are two apps, both of which are free. One of these apps is the same Oil Reporter which is available for iPhone, the other is Deepwater 2010, this app will keep you up-to-date with all of the latest oil spill news, whilst providing you with photos of the disaster.

Have you used an alternative applications to keep up-to-date with the oil spill? If so, let us know all about it in the comments section below.

If you have been following the BP oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico you are probably wondering what the energy company plan to do to permanently resolve the issue, well finally the company’s chief operating officer (Doug Suttles) has revealed their plan.

Suttles recently stated that the issue was highly important for BP, he has since stated that they will never produce oil from the well again and plan to permanently cap the oil well with mud.

It has to be said that BP have been doing their utmost to funnel out as much crude oil as possible, however estimates suggest that their best efforts still leave 80% of the oil leaking into our oceans.

It seems as if BP’s best option is to fire mud into the blown-out well, lets just hope it works for the environment’s sake. For fully detailed information regarding the issue check out the detailed source article (link below).

Following our recent reports on the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, things have not got any better despite recent efforts by BP. Today BP has released a video showing the oil gushing out into the Gulf of Mexico at a rate of 5,000 barrels a day.

The video shows oil streaming out from a break in a yellow pipe, and turning lighter as it mixes with natural gas. The BP engineers have lowered another container called a “top hat” on the sea bed to hopefully begin to capture the oil.

BP hopes to plug the leak by the end of next week by pumping materials like shredded tyres into the well at high pressure. They have also started to drill a relief well but this could take up to 80 days to finish. Head over to the BBC website for more on this story and to view the video.

There is no denying how much of a disaster the oil spill is in Gulf of Mexico and how much of an environmental impact it has had already. BP has come under huge attack for not being able to stop the oil gushing out into the Gulf of Mexico, which is now the size of New York. The oil company has tried to use undersea robots to try to place a huge dome over the well, which is 1.6 kilometers below the surface.

According to Ottawa Citizen this crisis has been very costly and will see BP make huge losses – but something like this is to be expected when dealing with oil in the middle of the ocean. The oil giant also faces huge pressure from the Obama administration and could face a bill of several billion dollars.

So the fate of the coast of the U.S. relies on robots being able to lower the dome correctly in place – this just shows how dependent we are on technology being able to help us in a crisis.

We have just learned from Reuters that the plan to cap the leak with a dome was halted due to gas coming from the well. BP is now considering other options.
