The Boeing 787 Dreamliner has been a dream for sometime now, but we are pleased to say that this recession fighter has now started delivery to some of the first airlines to order them. You might wonder how can a plane be able to beat the recent slump in profits for some airline companies, and the simple answer is how much it will save in fuel.

The fuel savings are around 20 percent when compared to a standard passenger aircraft, which is down to many factors. Okay, so they may have to pay for the aircraft, but it will not take as long to get an ROI when compared to a 737, 767 or an Airbus equivalent. Speaking of that company, Boeing is hoping that the Dreamliner will be able to finally catch up to their rivals, which has been leaving them behind in terms of sales.

However, The Economic Times does point out that Airbus will have their equivalent, the A350, coming in 2013 – well if it does not suffer the many delays that the 787 did. Current passenger planes have stuck with the same design for many years now, so it is finally nice to see that all the latest technology will be used for the Dreamliner.

The plane is not all about efficiency, it’s also about comfort and quietness; there is noting worse than being on a flight in a cramped environment and you are sitting right on the wing, where the engine noise can often get too much for some. The engines in the Dreamliner are said to be much quieter than a conventional passenger plane, and the LED lighting will have a more soothing feel.

The aircraft costs $200 million, and looking at the price of flights these days, it will not take long to earn that money back. We just hope that these airlines pass on the fuel-savings to its passengers – but we would not hold our breath. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is the most advanced passenger plane in the skies, about time that these craft that we trust with our lives had some of the latest tech available to them.

Boeing have been coming under increasing pressure from Airbus in recent times, and the launch of the a380 has certainly made the 747 look a bit dated. However, Boeing is not ones to stand around and have now upgraded the much-loved Jumbo and launched the 747-8.

The new plane has now undergone its first flight, and the chief test pilot has given it a thumbs-up. The upgraded plane is larger than its predecessor, it can hold more passengers, go further and is much quieter, but is that enough to persuade airlines to part with their money and put an order in?

According to the Seattle Times Newspaper, the new 747-8 was in the air for 3 hours and 39 minutes, and the planned tests were accomplished. Although the plane looks large as it trundles down the runway once in the sky it looks very graceful.

The program is now a year behind, and in that time the Airbus a380 has been doing well, with many airlines putting their orders in. It is thought that not many passenger versions will be sold each year, but we could see a number of freight companies putting their orders in.

The new Boeing 747-8 is 18 feet longer and 13 feet wider, and the new wing design helps to give the plane more lift. The engines are more powerful and more economical and are based on the Dreamliner GEnx engines.
