Blockbuster has just announced something that is likely to aid them to do just that, as those who intend on pre-ordering the game with the retailer will find they will be receiving exclusive DLC that allows you to play as stars from FIFA 12.

The game is due out March 30th but as CVG explains those who place their order early will have exclusive content in abundance on offer which allows player to play as other sports stars from around the globe as well as Barclays Premiership footballers. One DLC pack features playable characters including boxer Sugar Ray Leonard, Basketball star Dwight Howard, American football’s Marshall Faulk and Ice Hockey legend Jeremy Roenick.

The other pack will feature Premier League superstars including Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech, Arsenal’s young speedster Theo Walcott, Manchester City’s work horse James Milner and Manchester United front man Wayne Rooney. The pre-order DLC comes as part of a series of exclusive deals that Blockbuster will continue to offer throughout the year. The retailer’s head of games, James Morton said they ‘are delighted to be able to reveal the pre-order extras that will be available with Tiger Woods PGA Tour’ through their continued relationship with EA.

Blockbuster has had a tough time over the last couple of years with stores being closed down and going into bankruptcy in the US, as their movie rental service was the main focus and is now being offered on so many other platforms. They will be hoping their new found games focus may just change things around, and if this latest offer is anything they’re certainly on course to do so.

Then the company was purchased by the Dish Network, and now it has been announced that Blockbuster is to cut movie rental price, but is it too little too late?

The DVD market is shrinking as more people turn to streaming services to watch their films, and to try and combat this the company have announced some changes to its polices according to Shane McGlaun of SlashGear.

From today there are thousands of movies available for rent for only $0.99 per day, and prices of recent releases have also been dropped. For recent releases you only have to pay $1.99 for the first day and $0.99 for each day after.

For brand new releases the rental price will be $2.99 for the first day and $0.99 thereafter. There is also another new service announced which is the unlimited rental plan. This will run until July 4 and customers can go into a store and rent a $2.99 movie, they can then get another movie up to the value of $1.99 for the first day at no charge.

When the free movie is returned they can go back as often as they want to get more free rentals, so this could mean you can watch as many movies as you like until July 4 for $1.99. This will surely tempt some customers into stores but will it be enough to turn the fortunes round?

There is always the option of a trade-in on new titles as well.

Many stores offer video game trade-ins leading up to Christmas (and other times of the year), including Blockbuster and Gamestop. For example, Blockbuster stores offer trade-ins on games from a number of platforms including Nintendo Wii, DS, PS3, Xbox 360 and PS2.

However, you do have to be a member of the Blockbuster store to be able to take advantage of the trade-in. You won’t find details of the trade-in values via the store’s official website, but you will be able to get all the information you need by visiting your local store.



Gamestop on the other hand have a few trade-in offers detailed on their website, so it might be worth taking a look. For example, trade in your old games such as Dead Rising 2, Medal of Honor and Battlefield Bad Company 2, and get $20 in-store credit towards games such as Fallout: New Vegas.

Like the Asda deal you have to trade in to get the game for such a low price, however Blockbuster are demanding two recently released titles, they have to be two of the following six games, Fable III, Fallout New Vegas, Medal of Honor, F1 2010, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II or EA Sports’s MMA.

The deal goes live at midnight tonight and customers will also received a £5 credit to spend in store, at the moment it is unclear how long this deal will be available for, so if your interested you should perhaps head to to your local Blockbuster store tonight at midnight.

Personally I would much prefer to take up Asda’s offer and trade in one game and pay £4.97 rather than trade in two games and pay just £0.99, which deal will you choose?

One of the main reasons was due to continued competition from the likes of online services such as Netflix. Blockbuster does have some sort of rescue package in place, but they are in a race against time to pull the deal off.

Jamie discussed a little about the rescue plan, but can these investors really pull it off? Blockbuster along with the new investors certainly have their work cut out, and will take more than just a few ideas to bring it back from near-death.

Caroline Humer from the Post Chronicle has reported that Goldin Associates MD, David Pauker said that Blockbuster has to find a new format and fast before their business is too far-gone to save.

Not certain how Blockbuster will be able to keep trading now that TV and Movie streaming is the way to go, with devices such as Apple TV, PS3, Xbox 360 and the upcoming Google TV all having the streaming solution. Blockbuster needs to be able to tie themselves with a big brand in order to compete with those who I mentioned above.

This news isn’t too bad for consumers as all stores will remain open, however one tipster suggests that up to 1,000 stores could potentially close down if things do not improve.

You can find out full information regarding chapter 11 bankruptcy here, to summarize it seems as if this form of bankruptcy is the most flexible and allows businesses to restructure their debt.

In the long run Blockbuster are trying to reduce their debt from $1 billion to $100 million, they will be working on a new business model, however they plan to continue their current customer reward programs.

Blockbuster shares have fallen by 30 percent, a direct result of a much tougher market, one that Netflix are coping very well with.

Blockbuster has always relied on people going to their stores to hire a DVD or Blu-ray; they then offered a mail service. However, the likes of Netflix with their on-demand streaming could have hammered the final nail in Blockbuster’s coffin.

The company has already gone to shareholders to help with its mounting debt – the recent decline in shares will not go down well though. AP reports that Blockbuster shares closed at 28 cents on Wall Street on Wednesday, we just wait to see if they recover today.

Blockbuster did have more than 7,200 stores worldwide but were forced to shut hundred of them last year. People are looking for different ways to watch movies now and Blockbuster have taken their time catching up to the likes of Netflix and Amazon.

Netflix Inc. the DVD-by-mail company and Coinstar Inc., the DVD vending machines operator has been offering consumers another alternative to just Blockbuster, and it seems that they like the service offered by these two other companies.

According to Associated Press, Blockbuster may have to file for bankruptcy if they are unable to convince creditors to help reduce their debt. The DVD rental company has now closed about 1,300 stores and looks to shut down more.

Blockbuster has been trying hard to update its business; they have tried to compete with Coinstar – offering a video rental kiosk, and have also tried to copy Netflix with its DVD-mailing service. Blockbuster has even entered into the on-demand service with Tivo, which you can read more about here. However, none of this has helped and the company now owes $975 million.
