While visiting BlackBerry’s Facebook page we were surprised to see that they have something planned for today, we have some ideas and maybe something official as well. RIM has not given any other details, except it will be shiny, new, and social all over.” Now there’s already confirmation that it will be BlackBerry OS 7, but what else, maybe the Bold Touch 9900/9930 or the new Torch 2 – maybe even three if we are lucky.

This could be perfect timing for RIM, as Apple is about to launch iOS 5 in just over a months time, but we do fear that it could get lost once the iPhone 5 strolls into town? Do not get us wrong BlackBerry 7 OS looks set to be awesome, but RIM are struggling to shine through this tough period. Who knows, maybe the release of these two new handsets will be able to kick start things off once again – although that does not help the thousands of workers who are set to be laid off?

The Facebook page where we got this news from does not give away any clues, but good old Twitter does. While looking through some of the tweets we can see that a few have been trying to guess what is coming, and we can see that Research in Motion has confirmed that there are new handsets coming today, and they will be running BlackBerry 7.

There have been a number of guesses going on following what was put up on the BlackBerry Facebook page, and were shocked that RIM answered back on Twitter saying, “You got it! New #BlackBerry devices are coming w/ our new OS, BlackBerry 7!” Now we do not know about you, but this looks like confirmation to us?

OK, so you would have seen that there is no mention of the new Bold Touch or Torch 2, but we know that they are coming, so today would be the ideal time – talk about pulling a surprise on us. Normally we have a few days/weeks notice when such an event is taking place, but one day does not give us enough time to do some digging.

There seems to be a lot riding on the success of the Bold Touch, maybe too much just for one handset. You look at any phone maker and they all have a flagship model, such as Samsung with their Galaxy S II and Motorola with the upcoming Droid Bionic. So the Bold 9900/9930 will be RIM’s flagship, but does it have what it takes to turn things around? As for the Torch 2, the jury is still out on this one, because the first Torch was more of a candle flickering in the wind rather than a bright light trying to see the end of that dark tunnel.

RIM has been a little quiet about their BlackBerry Torch 2, but it now seems that we are nearing its release date. The reason we say this is because the device has been spotted on the FCC website, along with a profile image. We still do not have all the details, but we can see the basic shape and size looks very similar to the current version.

RIM is now gearing up for the busy part of the year, as the BlackBerry Bold 9900 was also spotted on the FCC. This is all part of their big push for 2011, as they have a host of new devices coming in the latter part of the year, as well as the beginning of 2012. You cannot help but wonder why RIM has been off the radar, maybe they have just been letting some of the big launches from rivals to get out of the way first?

This does make sense, as the Canadian phone maker has had a hard time of late, and the release of the original Torch did not have the expected outcome. Sales were lower than anticipated, which is a direct result of Android and iOS dominance. We hope that RIM is able to bounce back from this, as they have been unable to produce a decent handset in some time.

That is a little unfair, as they do have some great handsets, but the real money is with the consumer, which is an area that they still struggle with. The original Torch promised so much, and while it looked great it was lacking in the hardware department. Thankfully its successor looks set to remedy that.

We expect the Torch 2 to come with a 1.2GHz processor; this only looks to be a single-core, which could pose a problem. How is RIM expected to compete with their rivals when they offer sub-standard hardware? Other features include 768MB of RAM, 5-megapixel camera and 8GB of internal storage. However, we are happy with the inclusion of NFC, which is a feature that not even the iPhone 5 will have.

As yet we have no official release date, but Wireless Goodness expect it to be sometime in August, which sounds about right to us. Again, we have no idea on the price, but we do expect AT&T and RIM to announce something shortly. Do you think that RIM should just stick to want they know best, as they clearly have an issue with making a consumer friendly handset?

Lots of people bought BlackBerry smartphones in 2010 therefore RIM will be keen to build on this success in 2011, however some wonder if RIM can compete with high-end Windows Phone 7 and Google Android handsets this year. Recently the BlackBerry Torch 2 showed up on BGR, could this be RIM’s flagship high-end smartphone this year?

Nothing has been officially confirmed by Research in Motion, however BGR claim that the Torch 2 features a 1.2GHz processor, a display resolution of 640 x 480 and OS 6.1. The BlackBerry Torch 9800 ran OS 6.0, featured a 624 MHz processor and a resolution of 480 x 360. As you can see you have roughly double the processing power and a much clearer display.

BGR also say that the Torch 2 is exactly the same size and shape as the last Torch, this may be a disappointment to some, however if you check out these photos you will see that the design does not look dated, also the screens hint at quite a lot of new and improved features in OS 6.1. One of the screens shows us BlackBerry PlayBook pairing via Bluetooth, another shows some sort of GPS location calibration.

We can’t wait to see just how snappy OS 6.1 runs with a 1.2GHz processor, when we come across a hands-on video we will keep you posted, do you like the sound of the Torch 2? We have embedded a photo of it below.
