In late 2010 we posted an article which listed the BlackBerry Storm 3 specs and also pinpointed September 2011 as its release date, now we have some more information for you regarding its release along with a brief hands-on video.

A video which originally showed up on CrackBerry’s YouTube channel has been embedded at the end of this post, it shows about 1 minute of hands-on footage, the OS doesn’t look very responsive, especially given the fact that a 1.2GHz processor and 512MB of RAM are rumored to be powering the handset, however let’s not forget that the OS will improve as developers smooth out bugs.

The Storm 3 is headed to Verizon this year, however SlashGear suggest that it may well arrive before the rumored September release date, CrackBerry say that the device may not be called the Storm 3 at launch, despite it being the successor to the Storm 2.

There are a few positives to take from the video, its form-factor looks quite desirable and the screen looks vibrant, we look forward to seeing some hands-on footage of the Storm 3 when its OS is less buggy and RIM have managed to get the most out of its impressive technical specifications.

It will be interesting to see how the Storm 3 competes with the high-end touchscreen smartphones when it arrives later this year, last year RIM sold a lot of BlackBerry Curves and BlackBerry Bolds, having owned the Bold 9700 myself I have to admit that despite it being a solid smartphone it feels very dated and not really an alternative to high-end Android / iOS devices in terms of intuitivity, perhaps the Storm 3 will change this.

Will you be switching from BlackBerry to Android / iOS this year?

While RIM are focused on their upcoming launch of the BlackBerry Playbook Tablet, it is no secret that the BlackBerry Storm 3 smartphone remains the device that BlackBerry fans are hoping to see announced this year.

According to this recent article by BGR, it looks like an announcement may not be too far off, as they have gone on record to say that the BlackBerry Storm 3 will be released sometime in September, and will come in a choice of two or three versions depending on which region you live in.

Aside from the release details, we also have a list of specs for the Storm 3, which BGR aren’t labelling as a rumor, as they have seen the device already and have a collection of pictures which you can view over at their website.

Key specs include a 3.7-inch 800 x 480 capacitive display (highest BlackBerry resolution yet), a 5MP camera with 720 HD video recording, a 1.2Ghz processor, 512MB of RAM, MicroSD support, optical trackpad, 3G Mobile Hotspot, a 1230 mAh battery and much more.

The BlackBerry Storm 3 will also run on version 6.1 of the BlackBerry OS and the device may not feature Storm branding on it. We’re not going to post the images of the device here, but you can check them out over at BGR – let us know your thoughts on the design choice.

Are you waiting for this device to release, or have you switched your interest to another device which is on the way? No indication on what carriers the Storm 3 will arrive on, but Verizon is obviously a favorite which has been mentioned numerous times.

The BlackBerry Storm 3 has been causing quite a stir in recent times, with reports suggesting that it would be cancelled. This however has not stopped people talking about it, and with the talk comes news of some improved specs to feast our eyes on.

Exactly one month ago today, our very own Alan Ng posted an article with the sad news that Verizon had cancelled their release of the hugely anticipated Storm 3.

This could mean a variety of things — such as the phone being completely cancelled. The failure to even mention the handset at BlackBerry’s recent event tipped the Storm 3 even more into the world of uncertainty, but there always is another option.

The BlackBerry Storm 3, if Verizon don’t take it could be offered to other networks, but which one would want to take it off Verizon’s hands?

RIM have been searching for a way back into the popularity lists as of late, with Apple and Android storming ahead in the popularity contest, and I think it is fair to say that the Torch didn’t set our worlds alight, did it?

As far as the new round of specs are concerned, we hope these are infact legitimate which means that there is still life in the Storm 3, along with the upbeat thoughts of BlackBerry making a last dash sprint to the finish line.

The camera is something we all like to have on our phones these days, and initial reports suggested that the Storm would carry a 5MP camera. Whereas the new rumor gives us 8MP to drool over, along with a dual-LED flash.

We have also learned that the Storm 3 would come with a 8GB version, but it also looks like Research In Motion would throw a 16GB version into the works aswell as 512MB RAM, 1GB ROM, and a 1GHz processor.

Along with these specs, expect to see the almost signature trackpad, a 3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors, WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth. Battery life is also expected to give us 9 hours of constant talk time and 432-hours of stand-by-time.

When it comes to the operating system, this is where things get complex. Will it ship with OS 6 or the same OS as the PlayBook? If the latter is true, expect BlackBerry App World to receive a huge update with QNX titles.

If these rumors are to be believed, could the BlackBerry Storm 3 be RIM’s saving grace?

We haven’t really had any conclusive evidence that the rumored BlackBerry Storm 3 handset is real, until now that is. A recent inventory screenshot has just confirmed that the handset is genuine and will be coming to Verizon Wireless soon.

As reported from BGR, the handset has just appeared in a Cellbrite inventory listing. If you didn’t know, this is the internal system which Verizon employees use to transfer information amongst each other. Cellbrite was also the tool which unveiled the mystery surrounding the Droid Incredible all those months ago.

As for the new screenshot though, you can clearly see that BlackBerry Storm 3 is listed underneath the 1st and 2nd generation Storm handsets, and a release is now likely to follow before the end of the year.

Will the form factor be the same as the previous Storms, or will RIM decide to give the Storm 3 a facelift? It would be awesome if it came with their new BlackBerry Tablet OS – that would really get me interested.

Let us know your thoughts on this. How many of you are holding on for a Storm 3 announcement?

At the beginning of the week Daniel reported on what was assumed to be the first leaked images of the BlackBerry 9570 Storm 3, we are now getting reports that the new handset from RIM has been spotted in the wild. The worrying thing is, it looks just like the Storm 2.

If this is true, then this coincides with my recent report that the new Storm would be like its predecessor but on a diet. According to BlackBerry Leaks, the new BlackBerry 9570 will come with a few minor hardware upgrades, and one major software upgrade to OS 6.

If this image turns out to be true, then this could be a huge mistake from Research In Motion. They already know that the past Storm handsets have not sold as well as they had hoped, and as for the Torch – what more can I say?

Chris Ziegler from Engadget thinks that RIM could call this new handset the BlackBerry Storm 2.5 or plus, this makes a lot of sense and will be just what Apple did with the iPhone 3GS.

View the images here; do you believe that it is the BlackBerry Storm 3?

Back in August we had expected RIM to unveil the new BlackBerry Storm 3, but as we all know, it was a no show. However, since then we have been getting little snippets of information – the latest being a leaked image. By now you would have had time to study the images and come to your own conclusions, such as the new smartphone looking like a Strom 2 on a diet.

We still do not know for sure if the leaked images of the new Storm 3 from Research In Motion were real – Chris Ziegler from Engadget thought that it could have been the work of Photoshop.

BGR do not believe these latest leaked images to be the real deal – instead they believe that the new Storm 3 will be like its predecessor but much slimmer and lighter. Sadly the cell phone website also believes that the new RIM handset will stick with the SurePress display – we certainly hope not.

If rumors are to be believed then the BlackBerry Storm 3 will be with us before the year is out, but Verizon will want it to be something extra special – otherwise it will fade into the background due to the range of Android phones already available.

With the new BlackBerry Torch 9800 available from AT&T many BlackBerry fans are probably tempted to upgrade to RIM’s latest creation, however others may wonder if it is worth waiting for the Storm 3 instead.

Sadly we have no confirmed specifications for the Storm 3, however recently leaked information showed up Engadget, which seemed to hint at what we can expect from RIM’s next touch only smartphone.

Lets start with the obvious difference, the Torch has a slide-out physical QWERTY keyboard whereas the Storm 3 relies on a virtual QWERTY keyboard, incidentally the Torch features a virtual keyboard as well as a physical one.

Software wise they both run BlackBerry OS 6.0, obviously both operating systems will be customized to suit the particular device it is installed on, however feature wise they should be very similar. Both devices will also feature RIM’s new Webkit native web browser, which is said to be a great improvement on previous versions.

Spec wise they are pretty similar, they both feature 802.11n WiFi, 512MB RAM, 5 megapixel camera and support for a 32GB memory card (we presume microSD). There are two main advantages that the Storm 3 will have over the Torch 9800, firstly it will be a World Edition smartphone, secondly it feature 3G mobile hotspot functionality.

Physically the Storm 3 will probably be thinner and lighter than the Torch (due to the slide-out keyboard), we have no dimensions for the Storm 3 yet, however we know that the Torch 9800 weighs 5.68oz (161.1g) and measures in at 111mm (148mm when open) x 62mm x 14.6mm, therefore expect numbers lower than these.

It is hard to go into more detail at the moment, therefore as more Storm 3 specs come in we will keep you posted, what do you think you will choose the Storm 3 or Torch 9800?

RIM held their press event yesterday and we had assumed three things, a new 9800 slider device, more details on BlackBerry OS 6 and a new Storm 3 smartphone. Research In Motion came through on two of those but it seems that the BlackBerry Storm 3 was MIA.

There could be a number of reasons why this is; the first and most worrying is that the Storm 3 could be no more. Why would RIM want to launch a new version when previous versions have not done that well? Also with the release of the Torch 9800 slider, they have killed two birds with one stone.

We all know how much corporate users love to feel buttons while sending emails, and we know that consumers love a touchscreen – the Torch offers the best of both worlds. This has worked well for the Motorola Droid and will no doubt do well for the upcoming Samsung Epic 4G.

There are those out there who will hold on to the hope that RIM will release the Storm 3, but I would not hold my breath for long. Do you think that Research In Motion has abandoned the idea of the Storm 3?

There is a worry that Android will dominate the cell phone market within one or two years, well that’s what we think if you take a look at the latest stats by Nielsen. This popularity comes at a cost, and that is to BlackBerry, as loyalty of current owners has now come into doubt.

It seems that current BlackBerry owners would ditch the brand in favor of Android thanks to the number of handsets on all four U.S. carriers. This could deal a huge blow to the upcoming BlackBerry Storm 3 and OS 6, which will get an announcement tomorrow, August 3, 2010.

I hear arguments from friends that how great Android is and how well sales are of the devices that run on them, and I just like to remind them of the fact that Apple only launch one new handset each year – so what else would they expect?

Android sales are now at 27 percent of the total cell phone market and the iPhone at 23 percent. More surprisingly 89 percent of iPhone owners say their next phone will be another iPhone, we have to wonder why they will stay loyal and not Blackberry owners?

Maybe it could be due to the fact that RIM does not seem able to move with the times, they have tried with two attempts at the Storm – will the Storm 3 do any better?

We have some exciting news for BlackBerry fans now, as the very first picture of the BlackBerry Storm 3 may have creeped out before it’s intended announcement. It is only a blurry picture, but well worth taking a look at.

The first picture comes to us courtesy of Engadget, who has acquired it via their tipster, who is also the same source responsible for our earlier report on the Storm 3.

According to their report, the Storm 3 is doing the rounds as the ‘Odin Touch’ at the moment. Engadget state that the Storm 3 is only a ‘minor’ refresh of the Storm 2, with most significance placed on the inclusion of BlackBerry OS 6.

However, BlackBerry owners will be pleased to know that the Storm 3 could be releasing with 512MB RAM – double the capacity seen in the Storm 2. Furthermore, we should expect a 5 megapixel camera, WiFi upgrade to 802.11n and also 3G Mobile Hotspot support.

Check out the picture through the link and let us know your thoughts on it. Are you impressed or not?
