We told you earlier a couple of days ago about the boardroom shake up over at RIM with a new CEO taking the reins. Now we have some news of a leaked RIM roadmap for 2012/13 but is it too late for the company to turn its fortunes around?

BlackBerry smartphones and other devices are thought to be getting BlackBerry 10 this coming fall, but in the meantime according to a report on BGR the company still has plans to launch some BlackBerry 7 legacy devices in certain regions.

There are two new Curve handsets being introduced in the coming months that include the BlackBerry Curve 9320, and the BlackBerry Curve 9230. The Curve 9320 is going to be an HSPA handset, while the 9230 will be an EDGE device.

Again there is talk of a brand new PlayBook tablet PC with an unknown screen size, but will have a 1.5GHz processor, NFC, and HSPA+ 42Mbps data support. This is expected to be available around May or June.

The BlackBerry London is still stated for a September release with another BlackBerry 10 handset in the pipeline but under the Bold model range. This will feature a QWERTY keyboard coupled with a touchscreen display.

Coming early next year is another BlackBerry 10 handset that will be a QWERTY slider device. Some of these devices could see some minor changes ahead of any release tough. Despite recent troubles the company with the right products could once again appeal to some users.

Trouble is both the Android and iPhone platforms have streaked ahead of the BlackBerry now. It also has increasing competition from the Windows Phone platform to contend with as well. What would it take for you to consider a BlackBerry device again?

We recently told you about a potential security flaw that affects the BlackBerry PlayBook, which will hopefully be fixed with the release of the new operating system next month. Now a leaked roadmap points to some new BlackBerry PlayBook models in the pipeline.

It seems that RIM are still pushing ahead with the tablet PC market with a possible two new models later this year. A report on SlashGear is claiming that that a leaked roadmap has revealed that one of the new devices will feature LTE technology, and have a ten inch screen size. It is thought the devices will be available in time for the holiday season sales.

The current PlayBook has recently seen some major price cuts in most parts of the world. There is also the suggestion of a new 7-inch device with 3G+, which could be available in April 2012. The roadmap also hints that the first BlackBerry 10 handset won’t be available until September.

This keeps in line with RIM timescale of a late 2012 release for the BlackBerry 10 platform. It is not known exactly what the device will be, but there is the chance it could be the BlackBerry London. Before then it is thought there will be two new BlackBerry Curve smartphones, which will focus on emerging markets with one only being 2G.

RIM is believed to be set to showcase BlackBerry 10 at the Mobile World Congress 2012 next month. The rumored 3G+ PlayBook is thought not to feature LTE, but earlier leaks of PlayBook OS 2.0 revealed support for 1280 x 800 resolution and LTE iconography.

Do you think RIM can still be successful in the Tablet PC market?

The BlackBerry PlayBook has seen a troubled life since it was first released and it has seen some heavy discounts recently. One of the biggest problems with the Tablet PC was the lack of features found on the operating system. About ago week we heard that RIM was going to showcase the next version of the OS at CES 2012, which they did with a number of new features. Now we have news of a BlackBerry PlayBook OS flaw that allows email spying.

According to a report on the Inquirer security researchers have found a problem in RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook Bridge software, which can result in data and emails being stolen. The authentication token is sent between the PlayBook and a BlackBerry smartphone when communicating, and it is put in a readable place.

A hacker could grab the token that would then give the attacker access to the tablet PCs files remotely. The BlackBerry Bridge software allows the PlayBook to communicate with a BlackBerry handset via a Bluetooth connection, and was one of the devices big selling points when it was first released.

RIM have since stated that the problem will be fixed once the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 software is downloaded to the device, and is set to be released sometime next month. This comes after the tablet PC has become available at a much lower price, and the company will be hoping that with the new OS and lower price sales will pick up.

Do you have the BlackBerry PlayBook?

It has been a tough 8 months or so for the BlackBerry PlayBook, however despite all of the heavy discounts and rumors of poor sales we are now ready to tell you about BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 and what new features and changes it will bring to RIM’s ageing tablet.

Research in Motion has been telling CES 2012 attendees all about this update and also publicized a press release which lists every little detail, you can find full details out via this link, in this article we will highlight some of the most exciting features and improvements the PlayBook will soon offer.

Once installed you will have access to a new unified inbox which brings personal email, work email, and messages from social messaging sites to one central hub, also the email client will feature tabbed functionality which will enhance multitasking capabilities. When composing emails you will also have access to more fonts, formatting tools and much more, another great improvement allows you to search the inboxes of multiple email accounts easily, the final change to the email client will allow you to set email signatures and ut-of-office messages and directly from the PlayBook.

RIM has also been very busy in regards to social networking functionality, OS 2.0 will feature a built-in calendar app which collates information from social networking sites, also social networking accounts will tie into your contact lists, which means that when you check a contact you will see the usual email addresses, telephone numbers, home addresses etc along with recent status updates, conversations and social accounts.

Typing on the PlayBook’s virtual keyboard is great, but it’s no replacement for a physical QWERTY keyboard, the good news is that OS 2.0 will allow you to use your BlackBerry smartphone as a wireless remote for your PlayBook, this allows you to plug your tablet into a HDTV and use your smartphone to control it whilst sitting on your comfy sofa – as you probably guessed you will also be able to use your BlackBerry’s physical QWERTY keyboard to compose messages and documents on your PlayBook – neat eh? On the whole we can expect much more from the BlackBerry Bridge feature to make it a more seamless experience.

Other things which OS 2.0 will bring include updates to Documents To Go to enhance functionality, better enterprise manageability and an overhaul to the Print To Go application. One thing which we are delighted to hear is that when you access BlackBerry App World on your PlayBook running OS 2.0 there will be lots of new applications primarily developed for the PlayBook, also there will be the ability to rent movies and TV shows in certain regions.

One area where we think RIM’s products can be a little clunky when compared to the competition is web browsing, well the good news is that we have been promised an enhanced browsing experience which includes a new “reading view” feature to eliminate clutter from the page.

As you can see BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 is quite exciting, we don’t know exactly what date it will arrive on, but it is scheduled for February 2012 – when we hear more we will keep you posted, for now you should check out PCWorld’s hands on with OS 2.0.

We recently told you that the price of the BlackBerry PlayBook had been slashed in the US, and then similar cuts were made in UK retailers. Today we have news that the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 is set to be showcased at CES 2012, but a release date is still unknown.

One of the biggest criticisms of the PlayBook has been its operating system, and the features it lacks. Now RIM has announced it will be showing off version 2.0 of its operating for the much maligned BlackBerry PlayBook. The company will then be showing of its BlackBerry 10 operating system a month later in February at the Mobile World Congress according to Digital Trends.

The company has starting to send out invitations to an “intimate event” that will take place at CES 2012 in Las Vegas. Unfortunately RIM has not said when either of these software updates will be made available, as currently they are only set to showcase the operating systems.

With the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 it would be nice if the company could announce a concrete release date for the software. At first it was believed to be available shortly after the device was first released, but since then we have seen numerous delays. The last rumored release was thought to be in February, so with it being showcased next week that is still a possibility.

Considering the recent price cuts if RIM could release the update early it would probably boost sales, as well as pleasing many current users of the device. Are you fed up waiting for the OS update?

BlackBerry maker RIM had a tough time last year with a dwindling market share and talks of sell offs from share holders. Their troubles were compounded by the low interest in its new tablet PC the PlayBook. A few days ago we told you about the company offering the device cheaply in the US, and now the BlackBerry PlayBook fire sale spreads across the pond to the UK.

Now consumers in the UK can pick the PlayBook for as low as £169 for the 16GB version, and according to TechRadar the 32GB model will only set you back a further £30. Retailers are also offering the 64GB model for £329.

Retailers such as the Carphone Warehouse and PC World are both offering the device at the reduced prices, but it is not quite as good as in the US where you can pick up any of the three models for only $299.99.

The BlackBerry tablet PC has only been available for around seven months, and when it first launched in the UK the entry level model would have set you back £399. It now seems that RIM are hoping to achieve something similar to what HP did with the TouchPad, and shift unwanted stock.

This follows the news that Sony recently dropped the price of the Tablet S, and comes as the market sees competition heating up following the release of the $199 Kindle Fire. The PlayBook doesn’t have the greatest collection of apps, but some users do manage to get Android apps onto the tablet.

Will you now purchase the BlackBerry PlayBook?

Leading up to the holiday season last year there were a number of discounts offered on RIM’s much maligned BlackBerry PlayBook. The device has struggled to gain any market share since it was released, which hasn’t been helped by delays in updating the operating system and adding some all important features such as native email. Now we can tell you that the BlackBerry PlayBook price has been slashed again in a new sale.

The company has confirmed that will now offer the tablet PC with a saving of up to $400 off the retail price for some models. RIM has announced the price reduction that can be found via their website now, and offers an amazing saving.

All three models the 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models are all on offer at the same $299.99 price on the US website. In the UK similar price reductions have yet to filter through but PC World have the 32GB version listed at £199.99. Originally RIM wanted you to part with $699.99 for the 64GB version of the PlayBook.

If $299.99 can get all three storage options on the PlayBook you can bet they get left with loads of the 16GB version. You can expect to see further reductions on this model in the future as RIM continues to try and shift unwanted stock.

This latest sale on RIM’s online store is expected to run until February 4th but there is a chance it could be the beginning of the end for the device. We could see a similar situation to last year with HPs TouchPad that was discontinued and sold of really cheap to clear remaining stock.

Will this lower price tempt you with the BlackBerry PlayBook?

Much has been said about the much maligned tablet PC offering from RIM since it was released, and many have said its biggest failings are its lack of features such as native email. About a week ago we told you that the company was to bring the price of the device crashing down. Today we have news on a BlackBerry PlayBook mystery as Best Buy cancels orders, and it makes you wonder if the device is to be discontinued at the retailer.

The team over at Electronista is reporting that Best Buy suddenly started to cancel orders for the device over the weekend. Some who had already ordered the tablet PC are saying their orders were dropped even after money had been taken and was almost ready for dispatch.

People on the Best Buy forums have been saying the retailer had been “overextended”, and checks have shown all orders have been cancelled. It is unclear why Best Buy cancelled the orders as its promotion was part of the RIM plan that is expected to last until the start of next month.

The cancelled orders also come as the listings for the device are also taken down from the retailer’s site, and now only have accessories. Other retailers such as Staples and Office Max are also showing a limited number of models for the PlayBook available.

It could just be that the discount for the device has seen a sales surge that has cleared out available stock, which mirrors the situation that was seen with the HP TouchPad fire sale. The retailer does normally leave products on its online store even when they have temporarily run out. This situation does make you wonder if Best Buy is planning on restocking the PlayBook though.

The retailer had originally threatened HP to pay for unsold TouchPad’s ahead of the devices fire sale. There could also be the possibility that RIM could stop making any new stock of the current model ahead of a refresh or a total pull out of the tablet market.

A few days ago we gave you the news that the BlackBerry PlayBook was set to be heavily discounted in various retailers over in Canada. Today we now have news that RIM confirms a US fire sale of the BlackBerry PlayBook as well, and it makes you wonder if we have another tablet failure.

According to an article over at Electronista RIM have confirmed that the device will be available in the US for only $199 at a number of different retailers. These include Best Buy, Radio Shack, Staples, Walmart, Office Depot and Office Max. Carriers such as Sprint and Cincinnati Bell all also slashing the price of the tablet PC by $300 and will now begin at $199.

This promotion has been listed as lasting for a limited time, but could last until the same time as that in Canada that is December 1st. In Canada it is thought the lower price will return at some point permanently. At the time of writing the retailers have not altered their prices online, and comes a few weeks after a price reduction to $300.

The PlayBook has recently come under increased competition with the release of the Amazon Kindle Fire, which is even based on the PlayBook’s hardware. It just has a lower 8GB of storage and a different build quality.

RIM has suffered problems with the PlayBook ever since it was launched, with many thinking the device was rushed to the market to compete with the iPad. But the lack of such features as the native email and calendars haven’t helped, and the software update keeps getting delayed.

Will these lower prices tempt you to get the BlackBerry PlayBook?

We recently saw the launch of the new tablet from Amazon that enters an already crowded market, which so far has been dominated by the iPad. The offering from RIM has seen mixed reviews and sales since it was first launched. Today we can tell you about the Kindle Fire effect as the BlackBerry PlayBook is set to get heavy discounts this holiday season.

According to AppleInsider many retailers are set to slash up to $300 off the device as they try and shift stock of the device. This coming Friday Staples will be selling the device from $199 for the 16GB version, up to $399 for the 64GB model in its Canada stores until December 1st.

This coincides with Black Friday in the US and other reports are suggesting the prices will come back permanently from December 18th. The company has only shifted 200,000 units during the last quarter, and follows retailer Best Buy knocking up to $150 off the PlayBook back in September.

Earlier this year Hewlett Packard decided to exit the market following slow sales of its TouchPad, which led to a fire sale of the device quickly running stock dry. Motorola’s Xoom only managed to shift 100,000 units in the third quarter, which saw the company make a loss of $32 million.

Now with have the new offering from Amazon that starts at $199, and brings further pressure on the PlayBook because it has similar hardware. The online retailer is selling the tablet at a loss and hopes to claw this back via Amazon Prime subscriptions. For now that strategy seems tom be working as early sales have taken off. As we get closer to Christmas there is a good chance that more retailers will discount the BlackBerry PlayBook.

Are these price cuts big enough for you to get the PlayBook?
