The update will bring your Bold 9650 to OS version OS 6.0.0.524, to carry out the update please ensure that you have the latest version of BlackBerry Desktop Manage installed (can be downloaded here), once you have done this head over to this page choose either “Personal” or “Corporate” email and then choose your model from the drop-down menu and a new page will then appear.

On this page you can either carry out a web-based update, if not simply scroll down a little enter your 10-digit Verizon Wireless number and choose which language you want and then download the update file and ensure that the BlackBerry Handheld Device software is closed. Once you have ensured this double click the executable file, follow the on-screen instructions and connect your BlackBerry to your computer via the USB data cable when prompted to, the update process will then start.

The whole process shouldn’t take much longer than 30 minutes if all goes to plan, we recommend backing up your BlackBerry beforehand just in case.

The version of OS 6.0 running on this handset is OS 6.0.0.80 and is apparently meant for Verizon, it will be interesting to see if Verizon release this update as it is said to be a little bit sluggish on this device, perhaps a newer build will be a little bit better.

Up until now Verizon have offered five different BlackBerry handsets, these are the Curve 8530 (White), Curve 8530 (Black), Tour 9630, Tour 9630 (without camera) and the Storm2 9550, therefore the Bold 9650 will be a welcome addition.

The Bold 9650 runs OS 5.0 and features a 3.2 megapixel camera, 512MB flash memory, physical QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi, GPS and 3G connectivity.

The handset itself is available today from Verizon Wireless for $149.99 (after a $100 mail-in rebate), this pricing requires you to agree a 2 year contract.

The BlackBerry Bold 9650 will apparently launch on Sprint on May 23rd, this handset will set you back $199.99 when you agree a two-year deal, this pricing takes into account a $100 mail-in rebate.

The BlackBerry Bold 9650 could prove to be a popular handset for Sprint customers as it features a pretty impressive spec listing, specs worth mentioning include a display resolution of 480 x 360, a 3.2 megapixel camera, 512MB of flash storage and support for a microSD card of up to 32GB (2GB card comes as standard).

The only thing which may put off Sprint customers is the fact that the carrier plan to release their first-ever 4G phone (HTC Evo 4G) pretty soon. Will you buy the Sprint Bold 9650, or hold out for the Evo 4G?

As reported from BGR, the CMDA-EVDO based 9650 will be availble in May and packs features such as a 3.2 megapixel camera with flash, optical trackpad, WiFi and GPS support, 512 MB of flash memory, microSDHC card support and HSPA and UTMS network support.

The phone will ship with OS 5.0 and although RIM made no specific mention of carriers for the device, it is likely that both Verizon and Sprint will take the handset on board.

With the HTC Droid Incredible available on April 29th from Verizon, will you still pick that up on launch, or does the BlackBerry 9650 offer more for you?

If you head over to BGR, you’ll be able to see a screenshot of the document for yourself. You might need to pop on your reading glasses, but you should be able to make out that entry #48 has the 9650 listed for release on May 16th.

This is pretty significant for Sprint customers, because if the date is legit, it means that customers will be able to get their hands on the handset a few days earlier than Verizon, who are also expected to release around that date.
