Google search has once again proven that it is the most utilized search engine in the land in recent comScore figures, however looking a bit deeper into the statistics we can reveal that in the U.S. Bing has overtaken Yahoo! search.

In November 2011 Google sites made up for 65.4% in comScore’s ‘Explicit Core Search Share Report’, followed by Yahoo! sites with 15.1% and Microsoft sites with 15%, one month later and Google sites made up for 65.9% of the explicit core search share followed by Microsoft sites with 15.1% and Yahoo! sites with 14.5%. As you can see Yahoo! sites lost out on -0.6% in just one month, this was eaten up mainly by Google, but Microsoft gained 0.1% of Yahoo!’s share.

There are a lot of factors which aren’t taken into account in these figures, but no-matter how you look at the current search share it shows that Bing is a huge step in the right direction when compared to Live Search, Windows Live Search, and MSN Search. It will be interesting to see if Bing can build upon this and perhaps become a serious competitor to Google search, we doubt it, but two search engines competing against eachother is great for the consumers who use them as both Google and Microsoft will work hard to make their search engines better than the rivals.

Having used Google on a daily basis for years now I find it hard to remember to use Bing, however it has to be said that at times Bing results are on a par with, or better than Google’s results. We can’t really see Google ever being overtaken by Bing, but if Google search was taken offline we could rest assured in knowing that Bing is a great alternative.

Did you switch from Google search to Bing? If so, why?

Users of the internet will have their favorite browsers and search engines with the majority picking a select few. Many people like to use Mozilla Firefox as their browser of choice with Google remaining the top search engine of. Now there is a Mozilla Firefox download that favors Bing available.

According to an article on PC Mag Mozilla announced last night that they had designed a version of Firefox with Bing as the default search engine. This is nothing new as last year Microsoft announced that Bing and Yahoo would be supported in Firefox 4.

Browsers can easily be adjusted to have various search engines set as the default via the option settings. The company said in a statement “Mozilla and Bing are pleased to make available Firefox with Bing, a customized version of Firefox that sets Bing as the default search engine in the search box and AwesomeBar and makes Bing.com the default home page”.

It added that existing users can easily install the Bing Search for Firefox add-on if they want the search engine as well. There is a variety of different customized versions of Firefox available that are distributed around the world. Mozilla released Firefox 6 after deciding to stop using numbers for each version of its browser, before changing its mind.

Mozilla have recently been showing off its browser for tablets, where the Awesomebar still has its tabbed menu but has been moved to the left-hand side. Despite the new version of Firefox having Bing, Google still has a strangle hold on the search engine market.

Do you use Bing?

Only a few hours ago we noticed that Google had a new doodle featuring Muppets, which was in celebration of Jim Henson’s birthday. You can see the doodle in this article and on this very page, or by visiting the search engines homepage for the interactive version.

Within the last couple of days we also heard that Microsoft had apparently spent over five billion dollars on Bing, and wondered how much this had helped the software maker take on Google. Now we’ve had some news sent to us about Microsoft wanting to bring a little animation magic to Bing, and this was detailed in a post here, which explains that Bing now features a “HTML5 Google Doodle”.

Google has become well known for their doodle’s that honor people and events around the world, with some being featured only in certain countries. This has become very popular with searches, and when they see a new Google Doodle, the hunt to find out more about the person or topic begins, also many interactive doodles have the user playing for a while. In the case of Pacman some people were on the Google homepage for hours.

It’s doubtful you can call the Microsoft version “Bing Doodle”, but some cool names given by readers so far included “Bing Bling”, which we thought was pretty smart. If Bing’s new HTML5 features showing different images were going to be similar to Google’s Doodle animations, what name would you give Bing’s version? Do you like “Bing Bling”?

While Google remain the biggest search engine available, a couple of years ago Microsoft launched its own rival Bing. Trouble is the relativity new kid on the block has got a long way to go to catch up with its bigger rival. Today we have news that Microsoft hemorrhages $5.5 billion on Bing.

According to CNN Money the two year old search engine is losing almost $1 billion a quarter, and there is no sign this will stop in the near future. The new Bing service was launched in 2009, but the losses go back to before that date. Since the company started releasing its online arm finances in 2007 it has lost $9 billion.

Microsoft has made a big thing of gaining search market share against Google over the last two and bit years, but it is not gaining this market share from Google. Bing has jumped up from 8.4 percent since it was launched to 14.7 percent. This compares to Google that sits on 64.8 percent, which is only just down from 65 percent it had when Bing first launched.

Over half of the share that Bing has gained has come from Yahoo, with the rest coming from AOL and Ask.com. Given the fact that Yahoo’s searched is powered by Bing, means that half of Bings market share gains have come from cannibalizing its search partner.

Microsoft are claiming that Bing will “reorganizing the Web”, and to manage this Microsoft is planning to use its network of products and partnerships to better understand what users want. Whether the majority of people will change their habits and use Bing over Google remains to be seen.

Which search engine do you use?

BlackBerry news was coming in thick and fast yesterday, so much so that we forgot to mention a huge announcement made by both Reseach in Motion and Microsoft regarding mobile search and search for BlackBerry OS.

During the BlackBerry World 2011 keynote RIM’s co-CEO Mile Lazaridis and Microsoft Ceo Steve Ballmer revealed that Microsoft Bing search and maps will be integrated into BlackBerry products at system-level, they also confirmed that these new features would launch this holiday season.

Things are still pretty vague, but they did say that many different search methods would be available, obviously standard search functionality will be possible, but we also heard that you will be able to search using your BlackBerry’s camera and microphone. This sounds very much like voice activated search and something similar to Google Goggles which allows you to search the web using pictures (find out more here).

One thing which has never really impressed me about my BlackBerry is its map functionality, it doesn’t seem very well integrated into the OS 6.0 environment and it is not accurate enough to replace a sat nav device, perhaps Bing maps and venues being integrated into the OS will be a great thing for future BlackBerry smartphones.

We like the sound of Bing integration, but we will have to wait to see it in the real-world before we make decide whether it is really up to scratch. Below we have embedded a 3 minute video which shows us some of what we can expect, are you impressed? We like the locally relevant deals feature, which lets you see deals in your area at restaurants etc.

Do you think Bing integration will be a good thing for future BlackBerrys?

As far as current progression goes, the news comes that Bing is now the fastest growing search engine in the United Kingdom. This information has come concluding an updated report done by Experian Hitwise.

Microsoft’s search engine Bing and the Social Analysis report show that even though Google are still the major search engine in the United Kingdom with 90 percent, the Microsoft sites have upped 0.28 percent in market share within February and March. With Google sites losing market share searches of 0.66 percent in this period. Stephen Lepitak also reports this in an article on TheDrum.

The report carried out by Experian Hitwise found that Bing have grown year after year, with an increase of 1.43 percent in 2010, the figures were at 2.96 and went up to 4.39 percent in their market share of searches. Yahoo saw a drop of 0.52 percent and is currently 3rd on the list of online search sites, and Ask who dropped 0.21 percent is listed the 4th most used of these search sites.

Facebook is the most popular of current social media platforms with 56 percent of social network visitors. Google’s YouTube had the quickest growth in March, from 18.32 percent up to 19.6 percent of social media visits within the United Kingdom during this period. The 3rd most popular social media site is Twitter with a growth of 0.53 percent.

You might wonder what we are talking about when comparing Bing Recipes against Google Recipe View features? The reason is because the number one search engine has just launched their new service, which is said to have features almost identical to what Microsoft launched in January.

PCMag picks up on the fact at just how similar the features are, such as calorie display and user ratings. However, there are still a few subtle differences, such as how Bing has more filter options, but Google’s seems more accurate when it comes to listing such things as calorie amounts.

This latest search option from Google is ideal for cooks or those who aspire to be a top chef. To see the results all you need to do is type something in the search bar and then select recipes from the menu on the left; you have to select more to see this option. There are a few filters that you can change, such as cooking time etc.

Bing Recipes pulls its results from a number of the top recipe websites, you can then sort these by ratings, meals etc. The new feature is very easy to use, which you can see for yourself in the video embedded for you below. We have also put a video of Google Recipe View below as well so you can compare the two for yourself.

Bing Recipes Vs Google Recipe View, which one stands out for you?

When Microsoft announced that they were to offer a new search engine to rival Google we thought they were mad. However, there is do denying that Bing is a more than capable alternative. There are still a few issues, but they are working through them and offering improvements all the time. The latest update is User Location.

We agree that this is a great addition to the search engine, and only helps to improve it; but the issue is they are a year behind. The reason we say this is because Google offered a similar feature last February. CNET News reports that Bing will now know more about where you are when you search.

An example of this is when you type in something that you wish to find in your area, so like restaurant, it will know where you are and bring up results of restaurants in your area. Do not try this for yourself if you live outside the U.S., as it is only available to them for now.

V3 has been looking into the benefits of the new feature, and said that local workers will appreciate it, as they will be able to locate certain places if they are new to the area. OK, so we know that they are still a little late to the party, but these improvements will certainly go down well with those who use the search engine.

Bing has had a slow start, even with all the media hype. Microsoft had a huge TV advertising campaign when the service first launched, and they still seem to be struggling to gain any ground on Google’s market share.

Are you pleased with the new feature on Bing?

Google and Microsoft have been having a war of words recently; it started with Google accusing Bing of copying their search results. Tensions between the two companies’s continue to rise with Microsoft calling the accusations a “publicity stunt.”

A report on Newser is reporting that Microsoft are saying Bing uses 1,000 data points to achieve its search results, with search items from Google only showing up ten percent of the time. Then a Microsoft executive said that Google itself has ‘copied’ some of the results.

According to a report on Liveside.net, Bing is seeing its numbers grow while Google’s are remaining flat. In the month of December 2010 Google had 69.67% of US searches, while Bing powered searches accounted for 25.77%. This is a trend which started back in 2009, when Bing were gaining market share. During 2011 this is expected to increase further with Bing grabbing a bigger slice of the market.

Whether anyone is actually guilty of copying remains to be seen, but both companies are the main search engines a lot of people use. Bing was the new kid on the block, but is now establishing themselves as a big player. We use a few different search engines including Google and Bing.

Which search engine do you use?

With Windows Phone 7′s launch scheduled for next month Microsoft is doing everything they can to build the hype, recently they officially announced Bing Maps, which sounds like a direct competitor to Google Maps.

Bing Maps will be the default map control for developers to use when developing apps with the Windows Phone 7 SDK, this map control is free to use for all consumer-facing mobile applications.

If you are particularly interested in Bing Maps you should check the new homepage and the Bing Maps Blog.

Bing Maps should allow app developers to easily incorporate mapping capabilities into their applications, without this easy integration I very much doubt that mapping-centric applications for Windows Phone 7 would rival similar apps available at the App Store / Android Market.

Are you a developer? If so, will you be using Bing Maps in your apps?
