Only yesterday we gave you some rumors that the Verizon release of the Galaxy Nexus had been delayed. There was talk that some issues had come to light with the 4G LTE compatibility of the handset. Now just as planned consumers in Canada can get some Galaxy Nexus action, but the US release date is still MIA.

Canadian carriers Bell and Virgin Mobile are now offering the handset to subscribers in the country, and according to the Android Community it can be snapped up from $159.99.This does have to be taken with a long three year contract though.

Rival carrier Rogers are still planning to have the Galaxy Nexus available in January though. The version of the handset available for Canada is the same HSPA+ model that has been available for a few weeks in the UK. US carrier Verizon are the only confirmed carrier presently that will be getting the LTE version of the Galaxy Nexus.

The version on offer in Canada is also over $140 cheaper than the reported $299 that Verizon will be selling the device for, but it will only be with a two year contract. The proposed December 9th launch in the US is looking to have been missed now, and currently there is no word when we can expect the device.

There are many Verizon customers who are angry at the wait for the device even though no release date has ever been made official. Some may now turn their thoughts to alternative handsets that are in the pipeline for release.

Are you thinking of getting something else now besides the Galaxy Nexus?

We sometimes write about dozens of different smartphones in one day, therefore it can be quite difficult to keep up-to-date with all of the latest gossip and news, one thing which makes things more difficult is when a carrier decides to call a device by a different name, today we can reveal that this is exactly what the Canadian carrier Bell has done with the Motorola Droid 3.

Currently we do not know when Bell will begin offering this impressive smartphone, or how much it will cost, but we can confirm that it will be known as the Motorola XT860 4G, don’t be fooled by the overcomplicated name as it is exactly the same as the Motorola Droid 3 which hit Verizon Wireless earlier month.

In a press release Bell stated that the XT860 4G will be available this summer, therefore we expect a release date to arrive within the next six weeks or so, we will have to keep you posted as we hear more. In terms of a price it is hard to say, currently Bell sell the HTC Sensation 4G for $149.95 as long as you agree a plan which costs a minimum of $50 per month, we think that the XT860 4G will be priced similarly.

You can see full tech specs over at Motorola.com, as you can see by the smartphone’s new name it connects to Bell’s HSPA+ 4G network, this allows for speeds of up to 42Mbps and is said to cover 96% of Canada’s population. You can find out more about Bell’s HSPA+ network here, apparently there LTE network is coming soon, however with speeds of up to 42Mbps we think its HSPA+ network is pretty desirable already.

So why buy the Motorola XT860 4G? Well, firstly as it connects to Bell’s 4G network we can safely say that it is pretty future proof, in fact even when Bell’s LTE network goes live 4G speeds should be sufficient. Also if your fingers don’t get on with on-screen keyboards this smartphone features an impressive QWERTY slider and a 1GHz dual-core processor has been thrown in for good measure, while we are hear we might as well mention its massive 4-inch qHD display and 8 megapixel camera which captures video at 1080p, if you look more deeply into the specs there is pretty much everything else you want from a high-end smartphone, Android 2.3 Gingerbread pulls everything together to make it a joy to use.

When we hear of pricing and release date information we will keep you posted, will you upgrade to the Bell Motorola XT860 4G or wait for LTE?

We have some disappointing news for Samsung Vibrant owners on Bell Mobility now, as it looks like Samsung has pulled a planned update to Android 2.2 Froyo after discovering a fairly major problem with the update build.

As reported from Engadget, it seems as if Samsung’s Kies software once again took center stage as users have been complaining about not being able to access the internal memory feature on the Samsung Vibrant, after using Kies to upgrade to Android 2.2 Froyo.

Samsung has acknowledged the problem and they have released this official statement:

”There have been intermittent issues reported during the firmware upgrade process with Kies for the Samsung Galaxy S i9000M series of phones. Samsung’s development team is currently aware of this issue and working towards a solution. Accordingly, The firmware update feature, which affects the ability to upgrade to Android 2.2, is temporarily disabled until a solution is released. “

What they failed to state is a workaround for Bell users who are now in possession of a handset which can’t make use of it’s internal memory. It’s also a headache to think that Samsung are still experiencing major problems with Froyo, even though Gingerbread is now out in the wild and Honeycomb will soon follow next year.

If you have a Samsung Vibrant on Bell in Canada, let us know your current status. Did you try to install Froyo using Kies?

Are you due an upgrade from Bell Canada? If so, you may want to check out the HTC Desire Z, you can either buy this as part of a one, two or three year deal, or if you prefer contract free.

As you can imagine the contract-free option is not cheap, it will set you back $499.95, as part of a three-year deal it will cost $129.95, as part of a two-year deal it will cost $449.95 and as part of a one-year deal it will cost $474.95.

I think it is a no-brainer to choose either the three-year deal or contract-free option, in fact I find the one and two year pricing options quite peculiar.
