Infinity Ward’s community head Robert Bowling has just revealed a bit of a bombshell, in the fact that Modern Warfare 3 actually uses an improved engine, compared to the one used for Modern Warfare 2. Here is what he replied to a user on Twitter when asked if there is a new engine for Modern Warfare 3 or not:

”@Sebianoti We haven’t gone into detail on the engine yet but we’ve moved beyond the MW2 engine and added a lot of cool stuff for #MW3”

That means that Modern Warfare 3 has a new engine of some sort after all, even if it hasn’t been made from the ‘ground up’ so to speak, such as the Frostbite 2.0 engine from EA DICE. And judging by the trailer itself, it certainly does look as if Infinity Ward’s engine improvements has paid dividends to the overall outcome in terms of visuals compared to MW2.

It looks very impressive, and we’re hoping we hear some more information in detail on Infinity Ward’s upgraded engine soon. We want to hear your thoughts on this, both from Modern Warfare players and Battlefield players. Which engine looks more impressive?

Consider this the first mini analysis of what is set to become a full on slugfest, on which graphics look better between Modern Warfare 3, and EA’s excellent looking Battlefield 3 game, as for the first time – both titles will be released in the same month so it’s going to be a head-to-head battle between Activision and EA to grab your money.

After watching those epic Battlefield 3 gameplay videos demonstrating the new Frostbite 2.0 engine, yeah we all thought ‘ok, Battlefield 3 is going to be the clear winner here hands down’, but after watching the MW3 debut trailer, you may not be so sure any more.

The visuals are actually very impressive, and as we mentioned in our earlier article, the graphics are definitely a step up from those seen in Modern Warfare 3. We can’t really talk about Black Ops here, since that was developed by Treyarch, not Infinity Ward remember.

We’ve included the trailer below once again, just so you can get an idea of the graphics. We recommend watching some of it in slow motion too, the London and Paris scenes for example to get maximum effect. After you have checked it out properly, we want to know if you still think Battlefield 3 wins or not from a graphics perspective.

When speaking in a recent interview with the Official PlayStation Magazine, DICE General Manager Karl-Magnus Troedsson accused their competitors of being lazy, talking about how other developers are using the same engine and the same formula – recycling it year after year.

This is an obvious reference to Activision’s Call of Duty franchise and the fact that Battlefield 3 makes use of a brand new Frostbite 2 engine, which looks pretty mindblowing we might add. Here is a portion of his statement, as reported from Eurogamer:

“Our competitors are getting lazy. They’re using the same engine, the same recipe for building a game. At some point you need to take that leap. I haven’t seen them take that leap since a long time ago.”

With this in mind, we want to know what are your thoughts on this are. You could argue that DICE are not exactly lying, since the last few Call of Duty games have basically used the same forumla – but that’s not necessarily a bad thing since COD4, Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops have all been hugely successful.

Do you think the Call Of Duty series is getting boring? Considering how good Battlefield 3 looks with a brand new engine, we do feel that Infinity Ward need to step it up themselves with a new engine for Modern Warfare 3 – although we cant see this happening by November. E3 2011 may bring some surprises though so lets wait and see.
