A 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa has now set the new auction record for a car by $4m. The price that the car went for at Gooding & Company was $16.4 million. The same model also held the previous record back in 2009, but that did not have the history that this model had. The car in question was just a prototype, as a result only 40 were ever made.

It was back in July when there were rumors that a new record would be set, so at least it shows that there is still plenty of money to go round with the super rich – its as if the gap is increasing between the rich, working class and the poor. There are so many nice vintage cars currently doing well at auction, but it shows that the Ferrari is still something special – how can anyone not like them?

According to egmCarTech there are cases where the same model has fetched almost twice the price at private sales – who on earth would pay over $30 million for a car? This does show that people are putting more value on possessions, which is very worrying.

It was not all about the 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, as there were other cars up for auction during Pebble Beach week. The 1931 Duesenberg Model J Coupe went for a staggering $10.3 million’ although this was still $6 million shy of the record it was the highest price ever paid for an American vehicle.

A 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Spezial Roadster also got a good price, fetching $9.7 million; although it had been hoped to fetch much more – maybe buyers were saving themselves for the Ferrari? There were two other vehicles that did not fare as well as they had hoped, and those were the 1979 BMW M1 and the 1959 Fiat Tipo 682/RN-2 Transporter. The former fetched $854,000, as it was painted by Frank Stella and the latter fetched $990,000.

Do you think that the price for such cars has now gotten out of hand?

Over the past few months a number of well known items have been going to auction, these include the Apple-1 (the first Apple computer), Darth Vader’s costume, John Lennon’s fingerprints and James Bond’s DB5. Sticking with 007, the gun that was held by Sean Connery has fetched $415,875 at auction.

The gun replica was used to promote the movie From Russia With Love, and was used in the posters only. The gun got much more than Christie’s London auction house had thought, expecting in the region of $22,500-$30,000 – not bad at all for a prop.

That means that the gun fetched 10 times the expected amount, no details were given about the bidder, Female First says that they must want to stay anonymous – not sure why that is.

The replica gun is based on a Walther Ppk semi-automatic, and was owned by the photographer who took the publicity shots from the James Bond movie. What with the DB5 and other such memorable, it shows that our favorite secret agent is still very popular.

Whenever you think of Apple you think of state-of-the-art design, matched by awesome performance. However, things were a little different back in 1976 (I was just four), which was when the Apple-1 computer was made. You might wonder why we would be talking about this now? Well it seems that this old computer has just fetched $210,700 at auction.

According to BBC News, thats 425 times the amount of the original cost. The auction was held at London’s Christie’s auction house a few days ago. There were only 200 made, which were built in Steve Jobs parents garage – how things have changed for the Apple CEO, you only have to look at the iPad and the new MacBook Air to know just what i am talking about.

The specs of the Apple-1 was said to be high in its day, just 8-bit 6502 microprocessor and 8K bytes of RAM. I do not know about you, but I would love to see one of these devices for real, this will give you a true sense of just how far Apple has come.

According to AP Marco Boglion, a private collector won the bid over the phone – not certain what he plans to do with his purchase.

Another device that was up for auction was Alan Turing’s papers to break the code of the Enigma machine; this did not make the reserve price.

How much would you have paid for the Apple-1? Was it worth $210,700?

With Christmas just around the corner we know that the Barbie doll will still be popular with you girls – although not certain if parents would be willing to pay the price of the latest version. Stefano Canturi was commissioned by Mattel to design and produce the worlds most expensive Barbie.

Parents can breath a sigh of relief, as only one has been made. The doll went for a staggering $302,500, although expectations had been higher. What made this doll so expensive was her jewelry, a chocker that contained a one-carat square-cut pink diamond.

According to BBC News, the previous record was set back in 2006 when the Barbie doll went for $17,091 – why would anyone want to own a doll worth that much?

However, let us not take away the fact that all the money earned from the sale of the doll will be given to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. This is something very close to my heart, as this horrible disease has affected me as well as many of our readers in one way or another.

Over the past few days there have been two auctions for two of the best singer/songwriters in the business, who sadly are no longer with us. The first was for John Lennon, which we recently discussed, and the other was for Michael Jackson. More than 100 items were sold at Macau, China, fetching over one million dollars.

Two of the memorabilia items between them fetched $425,000; these were a black crystal-studded glove along with an arm brace and a basketball signed by The King of Pop and basketball legend Michael Jordan. These went for $180,000 and $245,000 respectively.

Bidders from around the world attended the auction, which does not surprise us considering continued interest in the late great pop star.

Yahoo News reports that the Macau auction was not all about Michael Jackson though, other items from Bruce Lee and Madonna were also auctioned off; in total there were 435 pieces of memorabilia sold.

During a recent auction of John Lennon Memorabilia the FBI came in and confiscated a fingerprint card, which contained the singer/songwriters fingerprints. According to an article on Newser, it had been assumed that the item would have fetched more than $100,000 at auction.

It is not yet known why the FBI confiscated this item – we are certain that people have their own thoughts on that? We do know that the fingerprints were part of John Lennon’s application to become a U.S. citizen.

RTT News said that there were also other items up for grabs at the auction, such as early demos from Lady Gaga, handwritten lyrics from Paul McCartney and Bob Dylan. There was also Elvis Presley’s brown suede jacket, and many more.

We can be certain that the biggest item of the day would have been those fingerprints – would have been interesting to see how much they would have finally sold for? Tomorrow would have been John Lennon’s 70th birthday.

Two cars caught our eye this week on eBay Motors UK, the first was an advertisement for a 1965 4.2 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 Coupe, this beauty is said to only have done 16530 miles and has not been restored, which comes at a cost (£125,995).

Our favourite car auction this week was a 1957 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud 1, which was first bought by the London Borough Council back in 1957, and was serviced to the Lord Mayor of London. Not cheap at a staggering £42,000.

The Rolls Royce Silver Cloud was first unveiled in April 1955 and was replaced by the Silver Shadow. You can read about the history of the very rigid Silver Cloud on Wikipedia.

Have you found any good car auctions on eBay this week? If you head over to autoblog, you can see the awesome camper they found last week, the 1970 Oldsmobile Toronado GT.

In other news, eBay has launched recyclable boxes to show a little of its environmental friendliness, more details on tamebay.com.

When I finished watching the final episode of Lost I felt two things, empty and cheated. I hated the fact that I would not be seeing these characters again, and the fact that the ending was not what I had hoped. However, there seems to still be a lot of popularity for the show, which was evident at a recent Lost auction, where collector TV memorabilia was up for grabs.

According to Jen Chaney from The Washington Post there was a bidding frenzy over the weekend, with some fans spending $5,000 just for a pack of 12 Dharma Initiative beers. More surprisingly the Swan station door went for a staggering $16,000.

So let us take a look at a few other items and see how much they fetched for the Profiles in History auction. I have always known that a VW Camper van was worth a few dollars, but not as much as the Dharma Volkswagen van, $47,500.

Sticking with autos, Hurley’s Camaro went for $24,000, the Frozen Donkey Wheel that Linus turned achieved $25,000. One of the smallest items also went for a huge sum; the fail-safe key used by Desmond fetched $11,000. See how much some of the items that was sold over the weekend, let us know if you would have paid those prices for Lost memorabilia?
