ASUS touchscreen Eee PC coming in 2009 with Windows 7

October 16, 2008 by Peter

ASUS are not ones to be left behind, they know that HP are about to launch a touchscreen laptop, so they are making plans for their own version. ASUS hope to launch a touchscreen EeePC in 2009, and should coincide with the launch of Windows 7.

It is not sure what size screen the new ASUS touchscreen Eee PC will use, but DigiTimes assume that it could either be the 12.1 or 11.6 inch screen. The panel will either be developed by AU Optronics (AUO) or Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO).

Te one strange thing about all this, is the fact that ASUS say that the new laptop will be able to take advantage of the multi-touch capabilities of Windows 7, but that OS will not be launched until 2010. Think ASUS are getting a bit ahead of themselves.

ASUS GeForce GTX 280: clocked for speed

August 26, 2008 by Peter

The ASUS GeForce GTX 280 was in most purposes a very good graphics card, but ASUS must have thought that the there was a lot more to come from the GPU. They have decided to turns things up a little and try and get some more speed from the card.

As the price of the GTX 280 has fallen over recent weeks, it has now become more affordable. This means that people who want that top gaming experience is now within reach.

Those guys at Tweaktown have been putting the ASUS GeForce GTX 280 through its paces, and here are their final thoughts on it. ASUS continue to impress with graphics card release after graphics card release by actually offering an out-of-the-box overclock that makes a difference to performance in games. The actual overclocks they offer on these cards tend to be the difference between upping the AA or AF up a notch or moving from high to very high detail settings.

While it would have been nice to see a game included in the bundle, the mouse pad and CD wallet is a nice touch. Of course, we also get all the other necessary cables we need to get up and running.

Performance is ultimately what this range of cards is about, though, and ASUS has managed to execute this perfectly. The card really manages to scream along and helps give the GTX 280 even more performance, making it overtake the 9800 GX2 for the most part in times where it used to just sit behind it.

If you don’t want to venture down the dual-GPU path, you’re not too concerned about money and want the fastest single cored graphics card on the market, the GTX 280 TOP from ASUS is going to be one card that’s hard to pass up.

Update on ASUS’s new Eee Download service

August 26, 2008 by Justin

When ASUS launched their new Eee Download service, people thought it would be a welcome addition to Eee pc user’s. Instead it has caused quite a bit of confusion in only the few days of being live.

One of the biggest problems being, that every file on the site is in the supposedly Click ‘N Run format, or CNR for short. This is meant to be an easy and quick way for the installation of Linux applications, that is when the distro supports CNR. But for the unfortunate ASUS and Eee Pc users the Xandros distribution doesn’t.

You can read lots of feedback about the new service on the forums at eeeuser.com, this is what started the discussion at the above link:

I have tried to download and try out some the software from here but all I’m getting is a file with a .cnr extension. Is there any information on how to install the progs on the forum anywhere?

For more info see Engadget or other ASUS news. If you want to give us your 2 cents on the new Eee Download service, then leave a comment below.

New Asus Eee PCs: 1000HD, 904HD, 901 and 900 XP

August 21, 2008 by Justin

Just the other day I was looking online at my local computer store and I saw that they was advertising a laptop, I couldn’t believe how cheap they’re getting. Today we hear there are four new Acer Asus laptops being released.

Out of the new Asus laptops the 1000HD XP is the largest model with a 10-inch display. The 900 XP, 901 XP, and 904HD XP all have 8.9-inch screens with a 1024 x 600 resolution.

The Asus 901 XP is the only laptop fitted with the Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor. As far as we are aware the other three models have Intel Mobile CPU’s.

All of the new Asus’s have Ethernet jacks, 1GB of RAM and 802.11b/g WLAN apart from the Eee PC 901 XP that also features draft-N WLAN. Bluetooth connectivity is an extra on the 1000HD XP.

The 900 XP has a 16GB SSD, the 901 XP will come with a 12GB SSD, and the 904HD XP has a 80GB SATA HDD. All models will feature Microsoft Windows XP Home.

Prices will be $542 for the 1000HD XP and 901 XP, $479 for the 904HD XP, and the 900 XP will cost $447. Sadly all the models are only available in Taiwan at this time. View more Asus news or visit Pocket Lint.
