Asus are possibly better known for their laptop range and more recently the Eee Pad Transformer and the Transformer Prime. Last year the company announced its Padfone concept, and after what seems a long delay the Asus Padfone release nears with an upcoming MWC reveal next month.

It seems that Asus are set to reveal the final design at the Mobile World Congress on February 27th, and allows users to dock their smartphone into the back of a tablet. According to a report over at Android and Me, there have been various reports that the device will come using the Nvidia Tegra power plant.

But there have also been some leaked benchmarks that have suggested it will use the Snapdragon S4 processor, which was confirmed when a prototype unit was spotted at the recent CES event. This could all change though as the company is expected to reveal an all new design compared to al the prototypes that have been seen so far.

It will also mean the overall design will have changed because of the physical keys being removed as the device is expected to come with Android Ice Cream Sandwich straight out of the box. Another great feature of the Padfone is that it will support the Asus Transformer keyboard dock.

The device that was seen recently at CES had support for the older TF101 unit, but it would seem the redesigned Padfone would support the TF201 that is used with the Transformer Prime. Do you like the look of the Asus Padfone?

During Computex yesterday we knew that the ASUS Padfone was going to be showcased, but what we did not know that another similar device had been shown a couple of days previously. The CMIT TransPhone was that device and from what we have read they are both unique in appearance and features.

Looking at the video of the Padfone concept version we have to say that TransPhone has the edge with how the smartphone docks to the tablet. With the former you have to lift up a rear cover click the handset in then close that lid, which all seems a bit clumsy. However, the latter seems to be much easier, as it clicks straight into the back and just seems a much simpler design.

Saying all that, we still have to remember that the ASUS Padfone is still a dummy and things will change, but first impressions show that the TransPhone has the edge. Now we do not know what hardware is hiding inside the Padfone, but Engadget has learned that the TransPhone from CMIT will have a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, USB and HDMI ports and a SVGA display.

There are no details for price or release dates for either device yet. We are still not certain if these will take off, as we have never felt the need for such a device/devices. Having said that, we can see how they will benefit those who have a presentation saved on their smartphone and wish to show it off on a much larger screen.

Is there really a market for the CMIT TransPhone or the ASUS Padfone?

We are now well into Computex 2011, and as we are starting to get a few ASUS PadFone release details, along with rumors of it coming with Ice Cream Sandwich. It has been rumored for a while now that Android 4.0 will be called this name, and makes sense, as it will be more of a universal mobile OS for use with smartphones and tablets.

Keeping up with the combo idea is the Padfone, as there will be a 4.3-inch smartphone that will dock in the rear of an ASUS tablet device. This is perfect if you have an email or something on your handset but need to view it on something a little larger, which is where the tablet comes in.

Now we have no idea what we can expect spec wise, but we do know that the slate will have a decent battery life, thanks to ASUS putting in an extra cell. The controls are not final yet, but it does give you a good idea of what to expect, but you will notice that there is no rear camera that is down to the docked smartphone to provide this.

On the bottom of the smartphone you have the standard Android capacitive keys and on the side are the two connectors that connect to the pad, Micro HDMI and Micro USB. There looks to also be room for a Micro-SD Card slot, which will provide extra storage capacity. We are a little concerned that ASUS will stick with a 5-megapixel camera, when rivals are now starting to use 8-megapixel as standard – even Apple is considering this with the next iPhone.

For a greater insight into this latest device from ASUS check out the video below. Latest rumors suggest a release date close to Christmas. Do you think that the PadFone will catch on? Is ASUS now starting to cop Motorola with the Atrix and the Photon?
