A week and half ago we reported that Archos were to release a quartet of Android tablets, which were on show at CES 2013. However, the 7-inch version was MIA, but they were able to supply us with details. We can now tell you that the new Archos 101 Titanium Android tablet has been confirmed on the FCC website.

While it’s no surprise to see the device hit the FCC website, it’s good to know that the release of the Archos 101 Titanium Android tablet is now imminent because of its presence on the website. While the new 10.1-inch tablet from Archos is the largest from the four about to hit the market, it’s not the most expensive and does not have the best hardware when compared to other Android tablets.

The ARCHOS 97 Titanium HD is the better of the four new tablets because of its improved display, this model will sell for $249 while the 101 will cost just $199, which we have to say is pretty decent for a 10-inch Android 4.1 Jelly Bean tablet. Although, it will be lacking in the speed department when compared to some other Android tablets on the market.

Having said that, the 1.6GHz dual-core processor should be more than up to the task, but we have seen in the past that Archos devices always sound good in theory but never live up to expectations when released to the market. However, because the tablet will run stock Android we have no reason to doubt how well it will perform. Some consumers might wait for the release of the 9.7-inch version because of its improved display, but the Archos 101 Titanium display should not be that bad when you consider that it is comparable to the display on the Galaxy Note 10.1.

With CES almost at an end for another year there is so much that we have missed and never got a chance to talk about, such as the new Archos Titanium tablet quartet or the Platinum range. However, we’re pleased to inform you that we have detailed visual impressions of three of the four Titanium tablets for you below, which consists of the 8-inch, 9.7-inch and 10.1-inch models, the smaller 7-inch model was MIA during CES 2013.

The larger three models all come with the same internals, which consists of a 1.6GHz Rockchip processor and a quad-core GPU, all three also run on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out the box. If you are looking for screen quality then the 9.7-inch Archos Titanium tablet is your best option because it has a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536, which is the highest of the three larger models.

However, we’re told in the video hands-on that the build quality is far better on the other two sizes, which does seem a little strange. Before we go on we just wonder how long it will be before Apple consider a lawsuit, because the Archos Titanium tablet quartet looks very similar to the iPad don’t you think?

You’ll also see in the video below how games were quick to load, but there were one or two issues with the connector port as it did not seem a tight fit like one would expect. The price for the Archos Titanium tablet range is as follows, $119 for the 7-inch ARCHOS 70 Titanium, $169 for the 8-inch ARCHOS 80 Titanium, $249 for the ARCHOS 97 Titanium HD and finally $199 for the ARCHOS 101 Titanium.

We do hope that Archos has learned from the past and improved the quality of their tablets, as it’s well known that they have had production and quality issues in the past.

Archos has recently rolled out a new update for the 80 / 101 G9 tablet, this will bring compliant tablets to firmware version 3.2.46 and with there’s a long list of changes to talk about, some of which are more exciting than others.

You can see a full changelog here, once installed Google Talk will be part of the firmware, also Flash will feature additional acceleration support, camera quality will be better in high and low light conditions and you should notice improved volume control and less audio glitches. There is also better support for WPA2/AES encryption, tweaked power management and overall the tablet should have a smaller memory footprint.

In terms of minor software improvements there is lots to get through, we are told that standard video should display much more clearly if you are outputting to a HD display thanks to better upscaling, also there will be better network share capabilities, enhanced integrated translations and some minor changes made to Videoplayer, MediaCenter, Mediascrapper, File Browser, Photo Frame, Floating Image and Music player.

It is very easy to install the update on your tablet if you are connected to the internet via WiFi, if you do not receive a notification simply navigate to menu / settings / about device and then select firmware update – the on screen instruction should then take you through the update procedure. If you don’t have an active WiFi connection you must download the update to your computer (via this link), connect your tablet to your PC via the USB cable and select “Mount”, then copy the update to the tablet (not into a folder), unplug the USB cable once the file has transfrreed and then tablet shopuld detect and install the update automatically – good luck (here are some more in-depth instructions).

As you can see the developers over at Archos have been very busy, the G9 was only updated to Honeycomb a month ago and already an update has been rolled out – but have they missed anything? Let us know if you have come across any bugs which still affect you on a regular basis.

Late last month we told you all about the new G9 tablets from Archos, at the time of that post we were under the impression that prices would start at $279 for the 8-inch model and $349 for the 10-inch model, now we can confirm that prices are in fact a little higher than this, also we have an idea as to when Archos will begin shipping units.

The Archos 80 G9 (8-inch model) will ship in September and is available in three different models. If price is an issue for you there is a $299.99 model which boasts a 1.0GHz dual-core ARM Cortex A9 processor and 8GB of storage, however we would advise you to upgrade and spend $329.99 on the 16GB variant as this also boasts a similar CPU, however each core runs at 1.5GHz. There is also a 250GB variant which costs $369.99, however as this features a standard HDD we think that it may not deliver as many hours of battery life as the models which use flash storage, many think the 16GB option is a much better choice.

If 8-inches isn’t enough you can opt for the Archos 101 G9, this boasts a 10-inch display which outputs at 1280 x 800, again these tablets will begin shipping in September and there will be three variants to choose from, all of which feature dual-core processors. The cheapest model costs $369.99 and features the 1.0GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor and 8GB of storage, the next model up is the same as the last however it features 16GB of storage, this costs $399.99. Finally you can go for the top-end model which costs $469.99, this combines the dual-core 1.5GHz chip with a 250GB HDD, we can’t help but think a 64-128GB SSD would have been a better storage solution, do you agree?

No matter which model you choose you get WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1+ EDR, HDMI-out, Android 3.1 Honeycomb and a front-facing camera which can capture video at 720p, when compared to competing devices we were disappointed by the fact that there is no built-in 3G connectivity, does this put you off?

You can find out more information about these models over at Archos.com, if you are really interested in one of these new G9 tablets you can leave your email address with the site for up-to-date release information, we have done this, so when we hear more we will keep you posted.

If you’ve been thinking about purchasing a new tablet PC recently and you haven’t made your mind up as to which one you will buy, then I think we have some news that you really won’t want to miss out on. Consumer electronics company Archos has just unveiled its 80 G9 and 101 G9 Android 3.1 Honeycomb tablets, which both come with a Seagate Hard Drive Disk (HDD) with a 250GB storage capacity.

As noted over at financialpost.com, the 101 G9 and the 80 G9 are both powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core OMAP 4 processor from Texas Instruments, which the company says is 50% faster than NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 processors. The Archos 80 G9 and 101 G9 Android tablets not only provide users with access to over 200,000 applications on the Android Market, but they also include Google’s full suite of mobile apps.

Both tablets also come with a unique 3G ready solution, which means that customers will no longer have to choose between 3G and Wi-Fi-only models at the time of purchase. The 8-inch 80 G9 and the 10-inch 101 G9 both come with a concealed USB port at the rear of the device, which when paired with the Archos 3G Stick – a standard 3G stick designed to be compatible with all G9 tablets – will enable 3G connectivity.

The Archos 80 G9 tablet features an 8-inch display with a 4:3 ratio and a resolution of 1024 x 768, and the 101 G9 comes with a 10.1-inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 and a 16:10 ratio. With a whopping 250GB of storage space, users will be able to store more than 50 hours of full 1080p HD video. Both models also come with an HDMI output, enabling them to watch movies in 1080p resolution.

As for the price and availability for the 101 G9 and 80 G9 Android 3.1 Honeycomb tablets, both models will be available at the end of September with the 8-inch version starting from $279 and the 10.1-inch version starting from $349. According to the report, both models will be shown at the IFA at the beginning of September. Do you like the sound of the G9 tablet PC?

If you currently own one of the many Archos Internet tablets on the market, you may want to check if there is an update available for your model, as it has been reported that Archos are now pushing out updates to Android 2.2 Froyo.

As reported from Engadget, there are as many as five Archos model numbers which are going to benefit from the update, and if you are the owner of either an Archos 23, 32, 43, 70, and 101 – you’re in luck.

Furthermore, the update is set to bring improved battery life, better overall performance and also support for GPS adapters of the external variety. If you have one of the models listed above and haven’t received any notifications yet, you may want to head to your settings to see if you can force the update manually.

If you have been looking for an alternative to Apple’s iPad you may want to check out Archos’ 7 Home Tablet, an impressive video of this tablet can be seen at the end of this post.

This tablet features a 7-inch display and runs Google Android, it is powered by a 600MHz ARM9 processor which is capable of 720p HD video playback (7 hours from a full charge).

This tablet costs just $179 in the USA and €149 in Europe which is much better than the iPad’s pricing which starts at $479.

The video shows that the Android OS is pretty responsive and is more than capable of delivering a good web and multimedia experience, I must say after watching the video I considered purchasing one.

Do you like the look of the Archos 7 Home Tablet? Is it a real alternative to Apple’s iPad?
