Around a week ago we told you about a retailer in the US that was no longer listing the current version of the Apple TV set-top-box, and wondered if a new version was imminent. Now today we have further evidence of an Apple TV 3 refresh as more retailers have no stock of the current model.

We have already told you about Best Buy removing Apple’s little hobby from their listings, and now according to an article on TechRadar it seems stocks of the Apple TV 2 have run dry at UK retailer PC World. It also seems that staff at the retailer are being told not to take any new orders from customers either.

A refresh could even be announced at any upcoming event to reveal the iPad 3 ahead of a release. It is believed that Apple will finally offer 1080p streaming with a new device. The company has long been rumored to be offering its own branded TV set in the future. This speculation has increased recently with the comments from former CEO Steve Jobs about cracking the sector.

Instead of offering a complete TV set Apple could offer a new set-top-box with a host of innovative features. Besides new features we may see a whole host of new apps and services being added. We decided to look at some other retailers and find out if they had any stock of the Apple TV 2.

The Amazon US store lists as having one new model and is priced at from $189.95, while the UK store says it has only 5 left in stock, and is priced at £119.99. Looking at other UK retailers it was found that Comet has no stock, with Curry’s have some left but only in certain stores. Meanwhile online retailer Play.com only has stock via third-party sellers for £135.99, while Argos also has no stock of the unit.

Considering that the Apple TV 2 was available for only £89 in the country before, this shows stock is almost non-existent. What do you think we will see with the next Apple TV?

There has been a lot of speculation in recent months that Apple will launch a branded HDTV sometime this year. But in the meantime the company has the Apple TV 2 set-top-box that it often calls a “hobby”. Today Apple TV 3 rumors increase as the current model disappears from a leading retailer’s website.

Leading up to Christmas last year we heard reports that some retailers had began discounting the current model of Apple TV, and now Best Buy is no longer selling the device on its website according to a report on AppleInsider. The retailer was contacted about the lack of the device and a salesperson mentioned they had not seen them for a while now.

The Best Buy representative went on to say that it doesn’t look like they will be getting any back in stock after doing an inventory check. Previously another person had found a similar situation after a Best Buy staff member checked, and found all stores were out of stock. Meanwhile Apple’s own website still lists the device is in available.

Best Buy were the first retailer to stock the Apple TV device when it was first released back in 2007, so to have no stock now is slightly surprising. A refresh of the original device came in 2010 that helped sales to increase, but revenues from the device are tiny compared to other products in the Apple range such as the iPhone.

Tim Cook recently said that the Apple TV was an unusual project by the company as Apple doesn’t normally “do hobbies”. Cook also hinted that Apple sees potential for something bigger to eventually come from the device.

Best Buy recently had a customer survey that asked consumers about a possible 42-inch HDTV from Apple. Apple only yesterday revealed some new features for Apple TV as part of the OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion software coming in the summer. AirPlay Mirroring will allow users to stream wirelessly from their Macs to an HDTV using the Apple TV device.

It is believed that a new Apple TV device will be able to offer 1080p Full HD content, as Apple have been reportedly been looking to provide 1080p content on iTunes. The current model uses the A4 chip, and some believe the next model could use the A6 processor that will offer a good boost in speed and graphics.

Have you recently purchased an Apple TV?

It has been a day since we learned that the Greenpois0n Jailbreak for iOS 4.1 was confirmed for a Sunday release. There have already been a number of complaints that the jailbreak only covers the iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G and the iPad, and looks like we can add the new Apple TV 2G to that list.

So, we can now confirm that Greenpois0n will work with all Apple devices that use the A4 chip, but do not expect the jailbreak for Apple TV to be available on Sunday. According to a tweet from the Chronic Dev team, all their concentration is on the fourth-generation iPhone and iPod Touch, as well as the tablet device.

Gamal Sabry from Covering Web said that no ETA was given for when the jailbreak would be ready for the new 2010 Apple TV, as it seems that there are still a few bugs that needs to be resolved.

However, Sabry does point out that the Dev team guys managed to use the SHAtter exploit by using the PwnagTool in order to jailbreak Apple’s latest TV device. We do not know if Greenpois0n for Apple TV will be days or weeks after the Sunday launch, but we expect it to be the former.

Are you one of those considering jailbreaking your new Apple TV 2G already?

We have seen a fair few Apple announcements today, the new iPod Touch, Shuffle and Nano to name a few, but undoubtedly the dark horse of the show is the reveal of Apple TV with its updated features.

No more storage device, that is long gone as Apple are aiming for the skies, or the “cloud” to be more exact. This will allow streaming HD movies and TV shows using Netflix, purchased from Apple’s iTunes store which also received an update of its own.

Apple TV can stream movies from the internet or other mobile devices such as the iPad, or other iOS operating systems directly to our television sets. It does this by using its very own Wi-Fi functionality and also comes with an HDMI output.

So when will this device go on sale? You can get Apple’s update of Apple TV in four weeks, but you can pre-order the device right now via Apple.

Apple TV costs just $99, and for that price its impossible to see what all the fuss is about. This is a huge step away from the former Apple TV device that will be replaced, and also cost a whopping $229.

UPDATE – We have just been informed that the device will be streaming at 720p video only, as Apple say this is a happy medium of quality and streaming speed. Sounds about right to us. Again, you can’t complain for the price, or can you? What are you first impressions of Apple TV? Will you be purchasing?

You can check the gallery over at Engadget to see Apple TV in all its glory.

Apple’s Steve Jobs said last month that Apple TV was more of a hobby than a project, but we have to wonder if this is a mind game? We cannot see Jobs allowing the likes of Google with their upcoming TV device to take all the limelight – we believe that there will be an Apple TV 2 and it will offer Netflix and Hulu.

We recently reported that the next version of Apple TV could run iOS 4 and will cost just $99 – we can see the former happening but the latter is a bit of a stretch. Then again, there could be a little truth in that as Google is certain to offer their device at a competitive price.

Pocket-lint has been looking back at a NY Times article, where one of their reporters had been talking to an Apple insider. It seems that the Cupertino Company is working on a newer version of the Apple TV and has a team working on a number of key areas for the device.

We know that Apple usually has an iPod event in September – maybe they will use this as an opportunity to announce Apple TV 2 as well?
