Apple has recently announced the release of their new iOS 4.3 update with such features as HotSpot functionality, a few minor upgrades and tweaks to how certain iPad hardware works and a new version of the Safari web browser which has been touted as “twice as fast” as there previous browser.

Apple Safari 5.0.4 brings with it new stability, compatibility, and security. Developers have improved certain compatibility with webpages that were struggling with transition effects, fixed a numerous amount of problems with HTML5 video, webpages printing incorrect layouts, and certain webpages not displaying correctly when using plugins.

Minor updates that would often cause annoyances were also fixed, with one of the main gripes of a screensaver would show even if a video was playing in the browser.

VoiceOver was also put on the treatment table, and compatibility on web pages with text input areas, lists and selectable items seems now to work correctly. Stability for VoiceOver has also been increased.

Minor updates have also been added, especially many security fixes that now address the handling of JPEG and TIFF files that could cause crashes.

The update is both for the Windows version and the Mac OS X version which can be downloaded using the Software Update if you already have it installed. If not, you can download the Mac OS X Leopard and Snow Leopard version from here and the Windows XP, Vista and 7 version from here. Both are 30MB+

Have you downloaded Safari 5.0.4? Are you noticing any significant performance increases?

When buying a high-end smartphone these days a lot of people want to experience the best web browsing capabilities on offer, a recent video posted on Cnet shows how Internet Explorer 9 running on Windows Phone 7 seriously outperforms Safari running on iPhone 4.

We have embedded the video at the end of this post, it shows IE9 running on an unnamed WP7 smartphone running the FishIE Tank speed test, the performance is then compared to the iPhone 4 running Safari enduring the same test, the iPhone 4′s poor performance gets a laugh from the audience.

The video then goes on to show many different aspects of IE9 for WP7, from what the video shows it looks pretty impressive, however lets not forget that it won’t go public until late 2011, between now and then we will probably see a new and improved version of Safari rolled out, and potentially an iPhone 5 release, which will undoubtedly perform better on the FishIE Tank speed test.

If you have never ran the FishIE tank speed test you can run it here, basically the more frames-per-second your browser achieves with the more fish on the screen the better, the video embedded at the end of this post shows just how important IE9′s hardware acceleration capabilities are.

Obviously just because IE9 outperforms Safari in this benchmark test it doesn’t mean that it is a superior browser, however it is nice to know that Microsoft are working hard on their mobile web browser, let’s face it Internet Explorer hasn’t exactly been pushing the boundaries lately.

Are you entirely happy with Apple Safari’s web browsing experience on your iPhone 4?

Apple have released the latest versions of their popular web browser Safari, with version 5.0.3 coming for Mac OS X 10.6, 10.5 and Windows whilst a version for Mac OS X 10.4 has also been released.

The latest version is said to have fixed many bugs, patched plenty of security vulnerabilities, and have enhanced many current features already present in Safari.

One of the many features that ships with the latest version is more accurate ‘Top Hit’ and ‘Top Sites’ results within the location bar, plus a fix that used to cause Flash content to overlap on viewable web page content. Let’s face it, Apple has never been Flash friendly has it?

Probably the most important of the update is the 25 different security fixes for WebKit, not only that updates the browser, but the iTunes Store too.

More information regarding the updates in the latest version can be read via the source below.

You can download Apple Safari via the Software Update or Apple’s Safari page here, whereas Safari 4.1.3 for Mac OS X 10.4 is available via Software Update on your desktop or Apple’s support download page.

In a previous article, we reported how Apple were top of the security flaws and vulnerabilities list, and with new information we have found out today regarding the AutoFill feature on Apple’s Safari browser, it further concludes that the report was indeed correct.

The problem has apparently been around for about a year, but was only known to those ‘in the know’ as it were, which makes the issue slightly more ridiculous than it would under normal circumstances.

You should all know what AutoFill actually does, if you don’t then we will put it in the most simplistic form. It AutoFills fields in forms, remembering your past inputs depending on the fields you filled in such as name, email address, telephone number, and so on and so forth.

This is more commonly known as Auto-Complete, but with the screenshot below, Safari uses data from a stored Address Book card on the operating system to gather this information if selected.

Jeremiah Grossman explains it a whole lot better:

“These fields are AutoFill’ed using data from the users personal record in the local operating system address book. Again it is important to emphasize this feature works even though a user never entered this data on any website. Also this behavior should not be confused with normal auto-complete data a Web browser may remember after its typed into a form.”

But this is where the problem resides. Grossman explains this by saying:

“All a malicious website would have to do to surreptitiously extract Address Book card data from Safari is dynamically create form text fields with the aforementioned names, probably invisibly, and then simulate A-Z keystroke events using JavaScript. When data is populated, that is AutoFill’ed, it can be accessed and sent to the attacker.”

Basically, unselecting a few boxes and options within the browser won’t be able to prevent being attacked, you will need to uncheck ALL options that are categorized with the AutoFill system. The AutoFill system is on by default, so it may be time to check exactly what options you have set.

Grossman did notify Apple about the security flaw around a month ago, but has yet to hear anything back from the iPhone bigwigs.

What do you make of the security flaw? Have you changed your settings now?
