Carphone Warehouse Taking Pre-Orders of Apple iPhone 3G

Pre-Orders of Apple iPhone 3G
It seems to be all good news for new buyers of the Apple iPhone 3G today, first off it seems near impossible to upgrade your existing iPhone to the new iPhone 3G as O2 has had nothing but problems all day.

New buyers have reported to Product Reviews that they were able to buy the 8GB and 16GB 3G iPhone, although we are now hearing O2 are sold out of 16GB iPhones.

More good news for new buyers is that Carphone Warehouse has just started taking pre-orders of iPhone 2.0, and their site seems to be working fine.

So where does this leave us iPhone owners, well we have been trying to upgrade to a 3G iPhone since 8am without any luck, O2 have said that their site will be working within a few hours and that should be anytime now.

With the July 11 launch date not far away and the planned pre-orders starting today, you would of thought things would have been better planned.

Hundreds of iPhone owners have been left today feeling very annoyed and like us have been one of the first trying to pre-order by upgrading, all we have received is browser errors on O2’s website and redirects back too the same page.

Apple’s iPhone 3G and Google’s Android totally shakes everything up

Apple iPhone 3G and Google Android
There is just one thing we can say for sure at this point, the entry into the smartphone market by two new leading-technology players (Apple and Google), has totally shaken everything up dramatically.

Apple for the first time unleashed the full power of a modern computer - OSX - inside a cellphone (sorry, Windows Mobile was never in the same class, and the potential it did have was never used), featuring a much more sophisticated UI. Apple also engaged the cellphone with its complete supporting cross-platform media ecosystem - iTunes/iPod - another first.

Google now hopes to be the first to introduce fully realized “cloud computing” into the cellphone with Android. How well that will work out we don’t know yet.

Now all the old-line cell/smartphone makers are racing to catch up: Nokia, RIM, HTC, Sony, LG et al. plus Microsoft. But Apple isn’t standing still…so Predictions are really iffy right now and my best guesses are:

Apple will continue to lead the technology, always about 1 year ahead of the pack. Its market share will grow and be good, but capped in the US due to the AT&T exclusive. Worldwide, I just don’t know.

MS will try to catch up with Windows Mobile 7 in 2009, but never quite will technically and it stands to be hurt most by Android, since both will be available to all makers and phone companies.

Nokia in particular is hurt by the lack of a full-fledged supporting in-house media ecosystem, despite its millions of handsets and dozens of models, because it has let the phone companies do that up to now. Symbian Foundation isn’t going to fix that. Maybe it needs to gobble up RealPlayer or another media service like it to get into the game fast.

Sony will just never catch on no matter how good their hardware is - the Walkman is history and their UI is always clunky. Palm will die next year, sold cheap to. RIM will maintain its core of button punching ‘crackberry’ addicts but never grow beyond that niche.

Open Source vs. Profit: Google Android (iPhone 3G), Linux (Microsoft Vista)

Open Source vs For Profit
The world of software for computers, cell phones and other gadgets has been changing to benefit the consumer for a while now and today change is moving faster than ever. Thanks to the world of Open Source we have many options to get great software for free, sadly not every consumer knows this and still decide to buy software that can be downloaded in a similar form for free thanks to Open Source.

There are many factors to think about when considering Open Source vs. For Profit software, but one of the biggest and prominent examples of free software and open source development would be the Linux operating system. This alternative to Microsoft Vista is free and if you get it installed with laptops then you will save a lot of money off the price, just look at the Eee PC.

You may not want to change all the underlying source code of Linux, but if you choose that option, you can. There are some benefits to buying Vista, but are these still worth the price compared to today’s versions of Linux?

Open Office is another software package that is available thanks to open source, this project gives you some free to download software that’s compatible with all other major office suites. This software is packed with features including databases, graphics, presentations, spreadsheets and word processing. You are able to read and write files from some of the top office software packages.

When it comes to the cell phone world it has been rocked since the launch of the Apple iPhone and this has a lot to do with the expandability of the device and with the 3G iPhone coming this year, things will only get better. When it comes to phones another application is about to rock that world and this will be from the Open Handset Alliance.

This is a group of more than 30 mobile and technology companies, they have joined to give the very first “complete, open and free mobile platform”. When Google Android hits the market later this year we will see it become a direct competitor to the iPhone, what will the outcome bring?

Open source will keep growing and as it makes its way to more devices in our homes like Linux, the user will want more open source software for the savings it brings. How has Open Source affected your life?

6 Issues with the new Apple iPhone 3G: 3rd party app solutions

Apple iPhone 3G
Steve Jobs is known for his attention to detail and that shows in all of Apple’s products but with all good products you do get flaws and today we highlight 6 Issues with the new Apple iPhone 3G. These problems with the iPhone 2 will mean very little to some users but they will disappoint other people.

First up is the lack of voice dialing; This is a must for many cell phones but the new iPhone has no voice dialing and that means tapping in the number in what can be very awkward situations sometimes, personally this has not caused me any major problems of yet.

Second we have the problem of cut and paste, this is something I use everyday on my home computer and with iPhone 2.0 firmware supporting saving images to the iPhone, we really need cut and paste as well. This will not be a feature on the iPhone 3G come July 11.

Third is multimedia messaging and the fact that the iPhone 3G does not have it, yes Apple want you to go online to look at photos that have been sent to you and they love to give the iPhone the ability to do this almost anywhere. This is great but we would still like the ability to multimedia message directly from the phone and not visit a web page.

The fourth problem would be the lack of Flash as standard, nearly all web browsers support flash but the iPhone web browser lacks this very important feature that is needed for all browsers that want to be just like a desktop.

The fifth problem is with replacement batteries and just like the Macbook Air, the iPhone 3G does not have batteries you can replace yourself. This does not matter if you do not need to replace the battery but as soon as you need too then you will find it a big problem.

The Sixth problem comes in the form of video recording, and the fact you cannot do it as standard like you can with even some of the most budget cell phones. This again may not be an issue with everyone but it still makes the iPhone 3G look bad for such a simple feature.

Now if we think about the amount of applications that are being made for the iPhone 3G then you will see that many of these problems have been fixed already with 3rd party apps. The 6 Issues may only need some software to give the iPhone those abilities. You can see from the video below that the video recording issue has been fixed with a 3rd party application.

The question is: would you want a phone with limited features or one that can be vastly expanded like the iPhone 3G?

Yesterday we heard that over 22 countries will be getting the Apple iPhone 3G on July 11, we also heard that around another 40 countries will be getting the new iPhone after that date. This goes to show you the power of the iPhone and how it will rule not only the phone world but also carrying on with being one of the most used phones for browsing the web. India will also be getting the iPhone 3G and this is a country with over one billion people. It will be through Bharti Airtel in India and they are India’s leading telecom operator.

It will be later this year when India gets the 3G iPhone and they too will benefit from 3G networking that is twice as fast when compared to the first generation iPhone, they will also get built-in GPS and all the extras in the iPhone 2.0 software. This shows that the latest technology is being taken to nearly every corner of the world.

The president and CEO of Bharti Airtel has this to say “We are delighted with the opportunity to bring the innovative iPhone 3G to India,’ and then went on to say “As India’s leading telecom operator, Bharti Airtel has always stood for innovation and customer delight.

Millions of mobile customers in India will end up with iPhones in their pocket; currently we do not have any details on the price of the 3G iPhone in India or the date it will be released. Check back soon for an update.
