We told you that a untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1 would be coming very soon and now the respective Chronic Dev Team and iPhone Dev Team have delivered. Absinthe 2.0 is now available to download and according to the makers, it’s one of the easiest jailbreaks to install yet.

Apple are obviously not going to be happy about this, especially given the fact that their latest version of iOS has been blown wide open with apparent ease. Furthermore, the people behind Absinthe have even goaded Apple by saying that the jailbreak is so easy to install, ‘even your grandma could do it’.

Consumers who jailbreak their device are well aware of the risks though, so this untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1 will be greeted with open arms we feel. Just to remind those that haven’t attempted to jailbreak before – an untethered jailbreak means that you can install this and won’t have to keep installing the jailbreak when the iOS device is turned off. A tethered jailbreak on the other hand would require this, so this is a big victory if you like for those concerned.

The untethered jailbreak seems to have come at a time when Apple are poised to unveil the next major version of iOS at their WWDC conference next month. All eyes are on what iOS 6 has to offer, but Apple’s security team now seemingly has their work cut out in insuring that their next version of iOS is jailbreak proof – if that’s even possible.

If you want to jump straight into the download, you’ll find links and instructions over at the GreenPois0n website here. This untethered jailbreak will only work on iOS devices running 5.1.1, although it will not work with certain iPad 2 devices so be aware of that before you attempt. For those wondering, it will even jailbreak the new iPad as well.

For those that have already installed this, did it go as smoothly as promised, or did you run into any trouble? The ball is now in your court Apple, we can’t wait to see what iOS 6 has to offer.

We have spoke recently about Apple potentially launching a smaller version of their iPad to compete with the upcoming Google Nexus tablet, but now we have interesting rumors suggesting that Amazon may be preparing a larger version of their popular Kindle Fire tablet.

If you have been keeping up to date with rumors regarding Google’s tablet, you’ll know that one of Google’s primary motives is thought to be releasing a tablet specifically to target Amazon’s Kindle Fire, which is very popular due to its $199 price point.

What better way for Amazon to counter this move by unleashing a brand new version of their Kindle Fire, one which offers a bigger screen and another value for money price tag. Information cited at Digitimes reveals that a 10-inch Kindle Fire tablet will release sometime during the third quarter and that it may even be equipped with a quad-core processor.

The 7-inch model with a dual-core processor is selling well as it is, so Apple and Google will have their work cut out if these reports are true. The new 10-inch is unlikely to come in at the same $199 price tag, but $299 would still be a great price for consumers.

Google are keeping quiet about their tablet project for now and Apple are unlikely to talk about an iPad successor at WWDC so soon after debuting the ‘New iPad’. How highly do you rate the Kindle Fire though as a viable competitor to tablet devices from Samsung, Apple and soon to be Google? Many consumers associate the Kindle Fire as just a fancy way to read books, but as we’ve seen with the device’s other features – it does a lot more than just handle e-books.

If you had to make an instant decision on the new 10-inch Kindle Fire, a new iPad with a quad-core CPU or a Google Nexus Tablet with Jelly Bean – what would you choose and why?

We haven’t heard too many details on Google’s forthcoming ‘Nexus’ tablet, but this week we have heard interesting rumors that Apple may be planning to release a smaller version of their iPad as a direct countermeasure.

It’s not the first time we have heard such whispers of course, as a 7-inch or ‘Mini’ iPad have been rumored for quite some time actually. However, Google’s Nexus tablet is a reality and should become available later on in the year.

It would be a logical assumption for Apple to offer an alternative to this and the good news is that not only may we be seeing a 7-inch version of the popular iPad, but also an iPad that will be priced significantly cheaper than the $499 new iPad as well. A rumor posted by iMore suggests that the 7-inch iPad will debut in October and will be priced at the $200 – coincidentally the exact same figure that the Amazon Kindle Fire sells for online at the moment. It’s also the same price range that Google are rumored to be targeting for their Nexus tablet as well, so could we see an almighty battle of the budget tablets towards the end of the year?

We’re also hearing that the $200 7-inch iPad will be offered with an 8GB capacity, meaning that it will fall in line with current pricing for the 8GB iPod Touch. Whether this means that a price cut is on the way to the iPod Touch remains to be seen, but it would seem pretty strange if Apple kept iPod Touch prices the same – who would pick up the 8GB iPod Touch ahead of a brand new 8GB iPad with a possible A5X or A6 processor?

Would you like to see Apple bring out a direct rival to the Kindle Fire and Nexus tablet? More importantly – would you be willing to buy one if this is real? Apple wouldn’t want Google to share all the limelight of course when they eventually release the Nexus Tablet, that isn’t their style.

The latest Google+ app update for iOS released about a month ago, which included normal performance enhancements and landscape support when writing a new post, but there is a lot of features missing that need to make it to the next update. The rating on all versions via the iTunes Store is currently 3 stars and the latest version has dropped even lower, which shows users are unhappy with the lack of features and also selected bugs a few people are reporting.

What should the next Google+ app update bring for iPhone and iPad users – our most wanted feature would be real iPad support, and not the lazy “2x” button in the lower right hand corner. The iPad is the biggest selling tablet by a mile and lacking true support for it’s resolution seems crazy, so we’d like to see an update release this month that includes real iPad support and not a small screen that needs enlarging (see the screenshot we took below).

It does seem that Google is dragging their heels with the Google Plus iPad app, although it’s worth pointing out that they might like to support Android more considering this is their platform. We had a quick look on the Google Play Store and can see the ratings are much higher for the Android version of this app, which shows 4.5 stars, although the app screenshots focus on phones and not tablets. Do you own an Android tablet, and if so can you confirm support with a native resolution?

Google has a page explaining what apps support the iPad and this can be seen here, which shows Google Earth, Sync, Search, Maps, Catalogs, YouTube, and Gmail. We cannot see the Google+ app on there and while the iOS app works on iPad’s, it’s not natively supported and understandably not on the above page.

Do you want improved support with Google+ for iPad, and what improvements do you feel Google need to make with their social app? You can find other solutions for the iPad that not only support Google+ but also other services like Twitter. One of these apps is called G-Pad and while it’s free the ratings are pretty much the same as the official G+ app, so if you’ve used G-Pad feel free to leave a comment below.

Every year we’ve updated to the new iPad and iPhone, which has become tradition after committing so much in the way of apps, movies, and other content that works with iOS. It’s fair to say I like Apple products and certainly favor them over the competition, but this doesn’t mean Apple’s latest iPhone 4S and new iPad 3 are perfect, they’re in fact far from it in my opinion.

Quick insight into the 3rd generation iPad from someone that has owned all generations – This is not a full new iPad 3 review, but what we will give you is our first impressions with some of the best new iPad apps for graphics and after having a lot of experience with Apple products over many generations. The new iPad could be seen as a major breakthrough when we’re talking display improvements, but other than the obvious Retina upgrade it could be said that the 3rd-Gen iPad is a minor update like the iPhone 4S when compared to the iPhone 4, so some buyers might want to wait for iPad 4 if they’re looking for other features not included in this generation.

What more do you need from an iPad or Tablet PC? While the new iPad has quad core graphics it lacked the improvement in CPU that some people expected, although after spending a lot of hours playing games designed for the new Retina display we wonder why this would be needed right now? We understand those people that wanted certain specs not included in the latest iPad offering, but when it comes to tablet gaming and the majority of tasks it’s hard to beat an iPad 3 and iOS 5 in our opinion (we’re ready for Android users to attack us in the comments on this one).

Some of the best new iPad 3 apps for graphics include Real Racing 2 HD, Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation, and Mass Effect Infiltrator – these games have been patched for the new iPad and are not built from the ground up for the iPad 3, so we wonder how gaming apps will take things further in the coming months and look forward to the results. You can see screenshots on this page from those games, which we gave some hands-on time on the new iPad, and we’re sure you’ll agree most of them look pretty good for a device as thin as an iPad.

These games are the early stages of what’s possible with new graphics and a superb display, which delivers 2048×1536 resolution, 3.1 million pixels, and 44 percent improvement with color saturation. If it’s all about the display for some people, the thing you look at all the time when using an iPad, then Apple made the one upgrade that really needed to be done for their latest tablet and after using the device for over 50 hours, we’re blown away at the improvement in apps we’ve used.

No problems yet – when we first got the iPhone 4S we found the battery a complete joke, this didn’t affect everyone, and the iPhone 4 had major signal issues that got solved with an iPhone bumper, so we did lose a little trust in Apple after buying every generation of iPhone and iPad to date. Interestingly we’ve followed the problems being reported about new iPad’s overheating or having Wi-Fi issues, and can confirm this hasn’t happened to our device after many hours of use. It’s also interesting how other bloggers write articles making it sound like every new iPad has overheating/Wi-Fi issues when the facts are – they don’t.

The good news is the new iPad has been a dream come true for increasing graphics in tablet apps, and also the text is razor sharp and noticeably improved. The reason we’re glad Apple got the new iPad right this time, from our perspective, is because of the issues we had with LED backlight bleeding on iPad 2 and problems with the last two generations of iPhone. Well done Apple – you got it right this time.

We’d be the first to admit Apple has had a few issues with recent product launches, which included LED backlight bleeding on the second generation iPad and signal issues on iPhone 4 that Apple officially admitted, although it’s easy to see certain people and news blogs attacking the new iPad 3 with every problem they hear about and never having any hands-on time.

Not denying obvious issues – If the Apple forums are filled with posts like “the new iPad 3rd generation has Wi-Fi problems“, or “my iPad 3 is charging slow“, and the new iPad is overheating, then we’ve got to agree some people are having problems with their new Apple gadget. You’ll also have to look at the amount of people having issues, and why these problems are taking place plus add to that the fact that millions of 3rd-Gen iPad’s have been sold.

You’re going to get new iPad 3 problems but what is an acceptable number of complaints? If you sell a few million units then it’s expected for a few thousand to get issues, and they will take to Apple’s official forums to complain about them, just like we would, but what percentage of units sold with issues is expected? People always shout louder about failure than success, although the signal issues with iPhone 4 and the 4S battery life problems had affected so many people that Apple needed to take action.

We can confirm no issues with two new iPad’s in our office after 40+ hours – while we’re not having issues it doesn’t mean others are not, although some problems like the charging issue is down to using the correct charger/cable, so sometimes it could be an error on the users part. We’ve been hands-on with “Infinity Blade 2“, “Real Racing 2 HD“, “Mass Effect“, and a poker game for online play while not finding any overheating or Wi-Fi problems. This proves that not all 3rd generation devices have problems, and as such these are isolated problems.

The real issue now is how many people have problems with their new iPad, and could it be a big enough percentage from the millions sold or just an expected amount? We’re sure Apple will replace or fix any product with problems just like they always have, but at the same time Apple haters and certain tech blogs will milk any problem for all it’s worth.

You might want to read a recent article about Apple’s new iPad being able to reach 112 degrees, although some of PR readers point out that “a device can last X times longer if running cooler“.

The standout feature of Apple’s new iPad is clearly that stunning new Retina Display, which promises 4x the quality seen in its predecessor, the iPad 2. Due to the new quality available, the plethora of apps available now need to be updated in time so that consumers can enjoy their iPad apps with the same quality.

We’re pleased to say that the Netflix app for iPad has now been given an update, which will now see app given a makeover with all the movie icons and menus updated to Retina Display quality.

If you have the Netflix app already on your new iPad, you will have most likely installed the latest update already. If not though, you can simply go to the app store and install the app to check out the higher quality on offer – it does look rather nice.

Unfortunately though, Netflix still can’t offer HD video streaming on the iPad. When talking about the update to the iPad, a statement on the Netflix Twitter page teases that HD movies are still in development and that they will ‘follow later’. Some changes that we can tell you about though include general stability fixes and improvements to Airplay and VoiceOver, as noted by The Verge.

If you feel that the time is now right to explore Netflix movie streaming on your new iPad, you can head to the iTunes page here for further details. Considering that Netflix already allows 1080p streaming to Apple TV, you have to feel that it is only a matter of time until we see it on the iPad as well.

Are you a happy Netflix customer? Let us know what changes you would like to see in the next update, other than HD video streaming.

We now have some more information for you now on the ongoing ‘heat’ involving the new iPad. Earlier this week we informed you about the number of complaints coming in about the new device being warmer than normal during operation, but now we have the first official word from Apple regarding the matter, and what Consumer Reports have had to say as well.

Why Consumer Reports you ask? Well if you don’t remember, Consumer Reports were the ones who refused to recommend the iPhone 4 to their readers and it was really their report which kick started the whole ‘antennagate’ affair which Steve Jobs had to publicly defend.

Now though, Consumer Reports has chimed in on the initial wave of criticism regarding overheating new iPad devices, by stating the Apple’s new device can reach up to 112 degrees when playing games such as Infinity Blade II. However, they have said that even at this temperature, the device doesn’t feel uncomfortable in the hand and the device is still the ‘best tablet they’ve ever tested’.

This actually echoes Apple’s official word on the complaints as well, as they have said that their device features 4G LTE, an A5X chip, a ‘stunning’ Retina Display and 10 hours of battery life – all of which ‘run under their thermal specifications’. They have said that if customers continue to have problems, they can contact AppleCare for further assistance.

Somehow though, we have a feeling that this isn’t quite over just yet. As we mentioned earlier in the week, our new iPad units perform just fine under heavy usage and definitely do not get to the stage where it physically hurts when holding the device. The type of complaints pouring in on the Apple boards state otherwise though, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens from here. Free iPad bumpers anyone?

You might fancy yourself as a bit of an artist or very well be one in a professional manner, but both the amateur and professional that don’t mind change can enjoy Sketchbook Pro for iPad. We installed Sketchbook Pro on Apple’s new iPad 3 today and found the app has jumped to version 2.4, which includes enhancements targeted at the new iPad.

The photo above shows Sketchbook Pro v2.4 running on my new 3rd generation iPad, and this means we benefit from bug fixes for the new iPad. These include improved importing of images, better brush performance, and also some better options thanks to the new power found on the 3rd Gen tablet.

Little enhancements in Sketchbook Pro v2.4 that make a difference – the latest update benefits from Retina display support on the new iPad, 18 layers at 1024×768 canvas and 6 layers at 2048×1536, which is a lot more than previous generations. You can also undo/redo up to 30 levels on iPad 3, which improves on 20 levels seen on iPad 2 and only 10 levels on iPad 1.

If you use Sketchbook Pro, how are you finding the latest update and especially if you’re running it on the new iPad? We’ve also included a few videos below to give you an idea of what is possible when drawing on an iPad, and we’re sure you’ll be impressed. The first video shows how to use the symmetry on Sketchbook Pro, and the second features a skull and crossbones drawing that took around 45 minutes but has been sped up for the video. In the last video you’ll see SketchBook Ink demoed on iPad 3, so feel free to leave a comment on that and the other videos below.

We’ve been having a play with the new iPad 3 over the weekend and when we entered the office today found a few emails from PR readers explaining the new iPad 3 was not charging, which amazed us considering we’ve used the tablet all weekend. Then it hit us that we did think the charging was very slow and the battery level didn’t increase that fast, although we didn’t take much notice while being fixated on apps designed for the new Retina display.

We performed a quick test over an hour this morning using the same charger for the iPad 2, iPhone 4S, plus another Apple USB lead plugged into a universal USB charger. The results show there has been a change from the previous generation of iPad, which charged just fine on the above chargers.

The solution for new iPad’s not charging is pretty simple – all you need to do is use the charger supplied with the 3rd generation iPad, which seems a no-brainer at first but didn’t need to be done moving from the first generation to second. With this in-mind it’s easy to understand why owners of a previous iPad and iPhone wouldn’t use the new charger, and instead used an older charger like they did with previous generations. Does this sound like you?

Older chargers don’t give your new iPad any juice or do so very slowly – the Apple lead with a USB universal charger showed the icon for being plugged into an electrical outlet, but didn’t charge the new iPad at all. The iPhone charger did charge but at a much slower rate than when we plugged in the new charger shipped with the 3rd-gen iPad. These results might vary for different iPad users, but considering the emails we’ve had and the official forums being filled with issues of new iPad’s not charging, it seems like this is an obvious change with a simple solution overlooked by users with old chargers/leads. Feel free to share a comment if you’ve had problems charging the new iPad.

Update: We’ve performed a few more tests switching only the USB cable and it seems to be related to the cable only (in our tests). There have also been reports of overheating with the new iPad, although we’ve not experienced this ourselves.
