The Holy Grail in the hacking community is getting the Apple devices running the A5 processor jailbroken. It has been known for a while that teams have been working hard to get the issue sorted, and today we have news that the Corona Jailbreak for the A5 iPhone 4S and iPad 2 nears release.

According to a report on SlashGear the iPhone Dev team has announced that the jailbreak is almost complete. All that is left to do is streamlining the user’s experience of the jailbreak. So far Apple devices using the A5 processor have been resistant to various hacking attempts, which haven’t been helped by Apple making it more difficult for users wanting to install unofficial software.

The Dev Team has revealed that all the “technical hurdles” with getting the jailbreak working have been fixed. Now all that is left is to get the final build as bug free as possible, and to suit a variety of users systems. There will also be several different ways of actually using the jailbreak tool.

A GUI for PC and Mac is being promised, along with a command line interface which will help beginners with the process. It will also help to debug and set up different options. Eventually the Corona tool will be integrated into the existing redn0w jailbreak tool, which will offer a different GUI and better compatibility.

The iPhone 4S using iOS 5.0 (9A334), 5.0.1 (9A405) and the other 5.0.1 variant (9A406) will be compatible, and along with the iPad 2 using iOS 5.0.1 (9A405). iPhone 4S users are urged to stick with iOS 5.0 if they haven’t already upgraded. Update: The jailbreak is now live and you can get it here.

Will you be jailbreaking your iPhone 4S or iPad 2?

If you have seen any iPad 2 hands-on videos you will have seen just how fast it runs, well it is thought that the iPhone 5 will also utilize the same Apple A5 chip, therefore we thought we would look at both SoC’s side-by-side to see why the iPhone 5 will wipe the floor with the iPhone 4.

Apple always kept quite quiet regarding the Samsung-manufactured Apple A4 SoC, however we do know that it consisted of a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 CPU which was paired with a PowerVR SGX 535 GPU, the clock speed may have been under-clocked by Apple to help the smartphone’s battery life, however Apple never confirmed or refuted this. According to Wikipedia the iPhone 4′s Apple A4 45nm chip was also paired with 2 x 256MB eDRAM.

Again Apple have kept quiet about about the Apple A5 SoC, we do know that there is a 1 GHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore CPU paired with a dual-core PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU, apparently the A5 can dynamically adjust its frequency to save battery life whilst still being able to deliver high-end performance when it is needed. The Apple A5 SoC is also said to feature 512MB of low-power DDR2 1066MHz RAM.

As you can see there is a huge difference between the Apple A4 and Apple A5 SoCs, power consumption has obviously been a major concern for Apple to address and the dynamic frequency adjustment should help things out majorly, however we are slightly concerned that gaming and video playback may drain the device’s battery very quickly.

Personally I think that Apple could benefit from underclocking the Apple A5′s cores for the iPhone 5, whilst having a super-fast smartphone is great we also want a device which lasts at least 24 hours from one charge, what do you think?

Hopefully we will soon see some Apple A4 vs. Apple A5 benchmarks which compare the performance side-by-side, obviously the iPhone 5′s benchmarks will differ from the iPad 2′s but it will give us an idea as to how powerful Apple’s new chips truly are.
