It was not too long ago that we heard a false rumor that Android 2.3 Gingerbread may require a minumum specification of a 1GHz processor, but now we’re hearing that OS Honeycomb may have some requirements too.

According to this report from Phandroid, reports have suggested that Android 3.0 Honeycomb may need a dual-core processor and a high resolution display screen to operate properly.

To go into more detail, the dual-core processor spec may have to be based on the Cortex-A9 architechture, which shouldn’t be a problem for handsets such as the LG Optimus 2X which runs on a Nvidia Tegra 2 chip. If the news turns out to be true though, it obviously isn’t good news for popular handsets such as the Nexus S, Droid X and Droid Incredible, as it may mean that users have to upgrade handsets if they want to receive a Honeycomb update in the future.

As for the high resolution display spec, we’re hearing that Honeycomb will require a minimum HD resolution of 1280×720 pixels. It’s worth noting that Honeycomb may turn out to be a Tablet-specific OS anyway, so there would be no need to panic about this. If these details are confirmed throughout this week or at CES 2011, we’ll give you an update.

While you may be sitting back and enjoying the festive period, there are still a lot of juicy tech news which is pouring out online and we couldn’t resist telling you about this latest one, related to Google’s next version of Android.

All the talk now is about OS 2.3 Gingerbread, and which devices will be receiving it, but now we have some potentially exciting details about Google’s ‘Tablet-specific’ Android OS called Honeycomb – destined to either be version 3.0 or 2.4.

According to a recent report by Digitimes, Honeycomb will be released during March, which will be the first time that a release period has been pinpointed. Of course, the date isn’t official but it’s always worth informing you when a new DigiTimes rumor gets out.

Digitimes were reporting on a few upcoming tablet devices by MSI, one of which will be equipped with Honeycomb, a Tegra 2 processor and is apparently due for release in April or May after Google brings out Honeycomb.

Either way, you don’t have to wait long for an announcement, as we’re guessing that this will come at CES 2011 in January, when Motorola will be announcing their new 4G LTE tablet on Verizon, also expected to be running Honeycomb.

What are your thoughts on the rumors? Do you think Honeycomb will come as soon as March?

It has been a while since we last spoke about the next generation Samsung Galaxy Tab device, but now we have more details on the next tablet from Samsung and a all but official confirmation that it will carry an Nvidia Tegra 2 chip as it’s main processor.

As reported from Engadget, it has just been revealed that Samsung has placed an order for a considerable amount of Tegra 2 chips, which will be delivered to them in the early part of 2011, presumably for tablet devices and also their future lineup of smartphones.

The information has come from Citigroup’s Glen Yeung, who has also said that Samsung are using Tegra 2 chips as a ‘reference design’ for the upcoming Android OS Honeycomb, which we still don’t know if it will be version 2.4 or 3.0 as previously suggested.

Either way, the next Samsung Galaxy Tab device is in good hands if the dual-core Tegra 2 chip definitely make’s it’s way into Samsung’s plans – don’t forget that the LG Optimus 2X is the first smartphone to feature the new technology.

What are your thoughts on this? Would you like to see a Tegra 2 chip in the next Galaxy Tab, or do you have better suggestions for Samsung?

Talk and speculation about the forthcoming Android OS — Honeycomb — was widely anticipated to be the next whole incremented version number, version 3.0. This now does not seem to be the case and will instead debut as 2.4.

Honeycomb is expected to drop in February 2011 and will be made available to the more mobile-specific range — tablets and mobile phones, according to Andy Rubin who showed off Honeycomb on what is believed to be the Motorola Stingray.

The Motorola Stingray was shown off on exactly the same day as Android Gingerbread 2.3 debuted, which was also thought to carry the 3.0 tag at first.

With Android versions being released every six months or so, we can only guess that “Ice Cream” or “Jellybean,” both names for future Android versions, will come out around May 2011.

It looks as though Google are holding out for version 3.0 and intend to deliver “something special” when it comes according to Taylor Wimberly of Android and Me. Read the entire report at PC World.

Following on from the recent Motorola tablet showing, in which Google’s Andy Rubin demoed Android Honeycomb on the device at All Things Digital, we have an update for you now as a list of new specs have been revealed.

As reported from Engadget, new ‘blurrycam’ images have appeared online, showing the Motorola tablet in all it’s glory, although we still can’t confirm if the device will be named the Stingray as previously rumored.

What we do know though, is that Verizon definitely has a tablet on the way, as one of the pictures shows a Motorola logo, and also a Verizon logo in the top left and top right hand sides of the device.

More importantly, the person who obtained the images has given out some specs of the device. They include a 1GHz Tegra 2 T20 processor, a 10-inch 1280 x 800 multitouch screen, a gyroscope, 512MB of RAM, 32GB Internal, a 3.5mm audio jack, Micro-USB port and mini-HDMI connector.

You can also see in one of the images that the device will also have a front-facing camera for video chats – which is always nice. We’re hoping that this device will also have support for Verizon’s 4G LTE network, as that would seriously give it a major incentive for consumers to pick up – what do you think?

The pictures are up at Engadget, have a look and let us know your thoughts on this upcoming tablet from Motorola.

Following on from our initial report which confirmed that Google’s next version of Android will defnitely be available next year, we now have an update on a new tablet from Motorola which is on the way – thought to be the previously rumored Motorola Stingray tablet.

If you didn’t catch any of the All Things Digital event live, you would have missed Google’s Andy Rubin giving a very brief teaser of an unnamed Motorola tablet which will be running OS Honeycomb next year.

While Google were not prepared to give out many spec details on the Motorola tablet, Engadget has already named a few and if you put 2+2 together, it does look seem likely that this device well be the Motorola Stingray, planned for a release on Verizon next year.

Engadget state that the tablet shown at All Things Digital includes an Nvidia Processor, Video Chat, a dual-core 3D processor and obviously Android OS Honeycomb.

These details match up with a report we wrote back in October, which said that the Motorola Stingray would be a 10-inch Android Honeycomb Tablet, which would come equipped with a Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, 16GB of internal memory and also access to Verizon’s 4G LTE network speeds.

Hopefully we’ll be able to bring you more details on the Motorola tablet unveiled this week. Do you think that it is the rumored Stingray or a completely new device?

Fresh after officially announcing the Samsung Nexus S to the world, Google’s Andy Rubin has delivered another bombsell, showing off an early look at Android OS Honeycomb, the next version to release after Gingerbread.

Let’s get the juicy information out of the way first. When speaking at the D: Dive Into Mobile event at All Things Digital, Rubin surprised everyone by showing off Honeycomb for the very first time running on a prototype Motorola Tablet – which we believe to be the Stingray.

Rubin confirmed that Honeycomb will release in 2011, and that it will have support for Tablet devices, we’re guessing this Motorola prototype will be one of the Honeycomb launch devices. We’re still waiting for further information on the new OS, but we do have a screenshot to show you courtesy of Engadget.

It doesn’t show much though sadly, just what the Gmail interface looks like on Honeycomb, complete with the various icons located at the top right-hand side of the tablet. We’ll update this when we get more info – for now though, what are your early impressions of Honeycomb?

It will be interesting to see when Honeycomb actually launches, given that we’ve only just heard about Gingerbread. There was a pretty big gap between the releases of Android 2.1 Eclair and Android 2.2 Froyo, but it looks like Gingerbread and Honeycomb are going to become the best of friends rather quickly – don’t forget Honeycomb is looking to be more of a tablet-specific OS, rather than a smartphone OS.

We have an update on the forthcoming release of Android OS Honeycomb now, the next version to release after Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The good news is that it may be coming sooner than a lot of you think, with an added twist.

According to this report from Phandroid, Honeycomb will be arriving during February of 2011. However, rather than be available for all Android devices, we are hearing that Honeycomb will stay specific to Tablet devices, perhaps similar to that of RIM’s new BlackBerry Tablet OS which is looking pretty slick we might add.

Furthermore, Phandroid say that both Motorola and LG have plans to release Tablet devices in February and March, and that both of them will be equipped with NVIDIA Tegra 2 processors.

We can’t wait to see some UI previews of Honeycomb, so we’re hoping we see some leaks before the end of the year. What are your thoughts on this Android, Tablet-specific OS?
