Amidst all of the woes regarding Nexus 4 stock troubles in the UK and US, we do have some pleasing news for those lucky enough to already be in possession of a shiny new Nexus 4. Google has been working on a fresh update of Android 4.2 and we’re pleased to hear that Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean is now available to download either OTA or manually if you haven’t had the notification yet.

As most of you are probably aware, Android 4.2 came with the Nexus 4 out of the box and the new version shortly made its way to other Nexus devices such as the Nexus 7 and the Galaxy Nexus. However, there were a considerable amount of bugs present in Android 4.2, which is why you’ll be pleased to see a swift Android 4.2.1 which alleviates some of the stress.

More specifically, the infamous December bug that was discovered inside the People app has been fixed, as noted by Droid-Life. Other than that there doesn’t appear to be any other major changes, so you’ll have to see what else you find once you’ve updated. The file is very small at just 1.1MB and the new version has been identified with a build number of JOP40D.

If you haven’t already had an official notification to update to Android 4.2.1, this zip file from Google will contain the installation needed to update to the new version manually – just ensure you know what you are doing beforehand though. Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 users should also pay attention, as the Android 4.2.1 should be rolling out to you as well – let us know if you have received anything from Google yet OTA.

While Google proves their point by bringing a quick update to the stock Nexus 4, carrier versions of other Android handsets such as the Galaxy S3 on Verizon is still stuck on Ice Cream Sandwich, with users desperately awaiting an update to Jelly Bean 4.1.

We’ve seen the frantic sprint to snap up a Nexus 4 from the Google Play store over the last 24 hours, but did you manage to get through at the second opportunity or was it another frustrating experience?

It appears that Google may have one or two things to iron out with their new Android 4.2 update. After launching the Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 with the new version of Android, we’ve had a continuation of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean problems occur to those who have already begun using Android 4.2 Jelly Bean on other devices, such as the Nexus 7 after a recent custom update became available.

Over the weekend, we initially told you about Android 4.2 problems that users were experiencing when using the software on the Nexus 7 tablet. Now though, these problems have extended onto the Galaxy Nexus as well, with a collection of bugs that are causing consumers considerable hassle.

One popular issue that had been doing the rounds online, was the rather silly bug which caused the December listing to be missed out on the Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.2, when inside the contact lists app and organizing birthdays. You can see over on Google’s official Android project website that the problem wasn’t affecting a minority, but rather all users who had already installed Android 4.2 on their Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 as well.

That isn’t the only gripe with Android 4.2 though, as a problem compilation by Android Police details some of the other issues related to Android 4.2 as well, specifically an annoying auto-brightness bug that appears to be affecting Nexus 7 users more than Galaxy Nexus devices.

Bluetooth appears to be having major problems functioning on the Galaxy Nexus as well, while in worst cases some users are also complaining about random reboots which obviously needs to be fixed up asap by Google. As far as we’re aware, the collection of issues all appeared strictly after updating to Android 4.2, so Google are going to have their work cut out to solve the problems and try to keep users happy.

Are you still experiencing Android 4.2 problems on the Galaxy Nexus? Keep checking Google’s official project website here and we’ll inform you ourselves if Google plan to issue a swift update before the end of the week.

We wondered how long it would take Google or developers to come up with an Android 4.2 update for devices other than the Nexus 4 and the answer to that...

We wondered how long it would take Google or developers to come up with an Android 4.2 update for devices other than the Nexus 4 and the answer to that is – not very long at all. Word has spread that a pure Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update is now available to download for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, for all owners who have a rooted device.

As most of you are well aware, the only two devices that have the official Android 4.2 update are the Nexus 10 tablet and the highly impressive Nexus 4 smartphone from Google. The only problem here though is that consumers are having major problems trying to obtain a Nexus 4 due to overwhelming demand, leading some consumers to ponder whether they are just better off waiting for an unofficial Android 4.2 update instead.

If you belong in that latter bracket and are in possession of a Galaxy Nexus, today is your lucky day. You’ll now be able to enjoy the fruits of Google’s latest Jelly Bean update over the weekend, by installing the pure Android 4.2 Jelly Bean ROM which is based off Google’s own AOSP, or Android Open Source Project.

The update has been posted to the XDA Developer Forums and the pleasing thing to note is that it looks like all of the major features are fully functional, with no sign of any major bugs. Looking down the list, we can see that gesture typing from Android 4.2 is working fine, as is Google Now and the new PhotoSphere camera features that Google demonstrated on the Nexus 4 recently.

The file is available in zip format and should obviously only be installed if you know what you are doing. You need to be rooted once again and have a custom recovery set up for it to work. If you are worried about losing data, always ensure that you have performed a backup before attempting to install any custom software.

Once again, the underworld developers come up with the goods before carriers. The Galaxy Nexus is almost certain to be getting an official update to Android 4.2, but it’s a different story altogether when you note that the release is in the hands of Verizon. Let us know how you get on with this and if you are now running Android 4.2 smoothly on your Galaxy Nexus.

If you haven’t picked up one of the latest Android smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S3 or the Nexus 4 from Google, you are likely to be in with...

If you haven’t picked up one of the latest Android smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S3 or the Nexus 4 from Google, you are likely to be in with an anxious wait to see if your current handset qualifies for an Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update. Today, we have some rather disappointing news to share as it has been confirmed that not all Nexus branded devices are going to be getting the update.

To get the bad news out of the way first, we can confirm that the Nexus S smartphone will not be receiving an update to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, while the popular Motorola Xoom tablet is on the hit list as well. Google hasn’t made a big public statement about this disappointment, but rather in an obscure Google Groups thread instead which the average Nexus S owner isn’t going to read.

It is obviously bad news that these devices will not be getting updated to the latest version of Android, but then again both devices are pretty ancient by today’s standards, so perhaps consumers will understand Google’s decision in this view. The Nexus S was released back in 2010, but still received a pleasing update to Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean after originally shipping with Android Gingerbread out of the box.

The Motorola Xoom has had a pretty good life in terms of official software updates too, as the tablet was released at the start of 2011 with Android Honeycomb and also received an official update to Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. While Google has said that both devices will remain on this version for the foreseeable future, it still doesn’t rule out the possibility of Android 4.2 arriving on the respective devices via unofficial means and to those willing to install custom software.

Places like the XDA Developer Forums have become an essential tool for most tech savvy Android smartphone owners these days and if the software gurus can manage to put Android Jelly Bean on legendary devices like the HTC HD2, we’re sure that they will also be able to come up with a stable Android 4.2 build for the Nexus S and Motorola Xoom.

Are there any Nexus S and Xoom owners still out there? Let us know your thoughts on the apparent demise of both, knowing that Google will no longer offer an official Android 4.2 update to either device. Did you expect this in all honesty, or do you still think the Nexus S should get the update since it is a Nexus branded device?

The Android 4.2 update may not be going live until November 13 officially, but already there is excitement brewing amongst Android owners, who are eager to find out when their respective handsets will be getting the elusive update.

So far, the only handset that will definitely be getting the update this month is the Nexus 4, which will ship with the new software on November 13, along with the Nexus 10 tablet which will also come with the latest version of Android.

For everyone else, the Android update waiting game begins once again, with Android 4.2 now becoming the main topic of interest after the initial Jelly Bean 4.1.1 buzz. We have told you earlier this week that Nexus 7 owners will have to wait longer for their update, and now we have some early hints for those of you with a Samsung Galaxy S3 or Galaxy Note 2.

The guys over at SamMobile have gained some new intel from their usually reliable sources, and they have told the site that Samsung has committed to providing their Android 4.2 updates for the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2, during Q1 of 2013. Obviously, there is no official word from Samsung themselves yet, but it is pretty logical to assume that these two handsets will be first out of the hat, given their popularity and date of release.

We think that a January-April timeline for Android 4.2 on the Galaxy S3 would be a fairly pleasing outcome as well, especially when you think how long it has taken for the manufacturer to push out Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean to carrier versions of the device – some still do not have the update, to remind you.

If Samsung are going to base their update schedule on product release dates, then we could be seeing the Galaxy Note 2 with Android 4.2 first, followed by the Galaxy S3 afterwards in 2013. Is the Samsung Galaxy S2 an outside contender for Android 4.2 as well, or will users have to rely on a custom ROM instead from the XDA developer forums?

If you are currently enjoying Jelly Bean 4.1.1 on your Note 2 or Galaxy S3, let us know what kind of priority you are giving to the Android 4.2 update. Is it really necessary for you, or do you not mind when it comes out, considering that it isn’t really a major update?

Android 4.2 will not make its official debut until November 13 when it lands inside the impressive looking Nexus 4, but as we’ve seen with previous versions of Android, features of the new update have already found their way to current handsets with Galaxy Nexus users first in line.

If you are in possession of a Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.1.1, you’ll be pleased to hear that you can now download the camera APK from Android 4.2 and enjoy all of the new camera features, including the new gallery and fancy PhotoSphere abilities.

For those that are not aware what PhotoSphere entails yet, allow us to give you a brief reminder. You can now take 360 degree photos in a Panoramic like setting, and then instantly share it off to various spaces, including Google Maps if you want to take your image global.

It’s just one of the impressive new features packed inside Android 4.2 Jelly Bean (not Key Lime Pie yet) and you can enjoy it for free if you have a rooted Galaxy Nexus handset. As always, there is a lot of tinkering to be done beforehand and it involves a bit of flashing – meaning that you’ll probably want to back up your data first before attempting.

If you are interested in trying this out, you will find a full set of instructions and all of the relevant download links over at the XDA developer forums. Alternatively, if you don’t have a Galaxy Nexus but also want a taste of Android 4.2 early, you may be interested in downloading the Android 4.2 keyboard with Gesture typing instead – details on this can be found courtesy of Android Police here.

So Android 4.2 is not even out yet, but already two major new features of Google’s new software have slipped out for early preview. Have you already had a play at the Android 4.2 camera or keyboard features? If so, let us know your impressions of both and whether you would recommend the update or not.

Hurricane Sandy may have caused the postponement of Google’s highly anticipated Nexus 4 event in New York, but it didn’t stop the company from announcing their new Nexus devices in a more formal matter. As of now, the LG Nexus 4, new Nexus 10 tablet and revamped Nexus 7 devices are all official products that will be available very soon for consumers.

We all knew that the LG Nexus phone was coming thanks to a collection of leaks that have been in circulation over the past few weeks. It’s always nice to see the devices announced by Google officially though, and we’re pleased to say that there are a lot of positive aspects of the Nexus 4 to share with you.

For starters, it ships with the new version of Android 4.2, which will offer consumers a few new features compared to Android 4.1.1, including some very impressive looking 360 degrees camera technology, which may give Google the edge over Apple when it comes to a panorama contest.

There’s a quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro processor on board, which will power a 4.7-inch 1280 x 768 IPS display screen with an 8 megapixel rear camera and 1.3mp front camera also included. One of the most impressive features that we can see is the fact that the Nexus 4 includes support for inductive wireless charging, with an orb accessory available as a separate purchase.

A 2,100 mah battery, 2GB of RAM and NFC round out a very impressive looking device and you’ll be very pleased to hear that prices start at just $299 for an 8GB model, or 16GB for $349. Google is going to be selling this device unlocked and the most disappointing aspect resides in the fact that there’s no support for LTE – only HSPA+ or GSM networks.

Google touts the Nexus 10 tablet as the thinnest tablet available on the market and it’s another device that is going to ship with Android 4.2 out of the box. While LG does the honors for the Nexus 4, Samsung has helped to build the Nexus 10 and it’s going to offer a screen resolution of 2,560 by 1,600 pixels.

As for the Nexus 7, everything remains the same except for the fact that Google has now introduced a 32GB model and dropped the 8GB model in favor of a 16GB version for the same $199 asking price. The Nexus 7 32GB model is going to be $250 as previously rumored, but there’s also going to be a $299 option for those that want HSPA+ data on board as well.

You can pick up the Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 devices from Google on November 13. The Nexus 4 will be available for $299 (8GB model), or $349 for a 16GB version. If you’re after the Nexus 10 tablet, expect to pay $399 for the 16GB model and $499 for the 32GB model.

You can read a full recap on specs and price for all three models via Google’s official press release here. We have added a selection of videos that we think you’ll find useful. It seems like a cluster of information all at once, but have you already decided which new device you are getting? Look forward to a Nexus 4 vs iPhone 5 comparison soon.

Samsung might be offering some comforting news for US Galaxy S3 owners wanting the Jelly Bean update, but it seems that Google is fully focused on moving ahead with the Android 4.2 Key Lime Pie update, which will be one of the features at their LG Nexus 4 event later this month.

October has turned out to be a bumper month for gadget fans, especially those that follow the latest smartphone news, and this is due to a number of brands sending out press invites for upcoming events. This included Apple revealing an event on Oct 23 for what’s said to be an iPad mini, also Samsung launching the Galaxy Note 2 in New York on Oct 24, and finally Google holding an event on Oct 29.

You can see the invitation Google sent out in the image below, which teases by explaining, “The playground is open“, so this could mean a number of things although we know Google like to take a fun approach to revealing new technology. The full Android 4.2 Key Lime Pie features should be demoed at the end of the month, and on what should be an LG Nexus handset with 2GB of RAM and a Quad-core processor, but what some people are wondering is when the release date will be for the new Android update?

Numerous sources are claiming the Android 4.2 update could launch at the event, although this certainly won’t be the date for the majority of Samsung phones, which some users are starting to hate the long wait after Google launches an OS update. If you’re a Galaxy S3 owner, how would you feel waiting many months for this update that could release from Google in a matter of days?

It is worth noting that Microsoft has an event planned for the same day as Google, Windows Phone 8, so feel free to let us know which event you are more excited about in the comments. Google’s Oct 29 event has a start time of 7am PST, although Microsoft will start 3 hours later. We’ve included a video below that takes a look at Android 4.1.2 features, and makes some predictions for Android 4.2. What do you want to see in Android 4.2 Key Lime Pie?
