Although we already knew that the Samsung Galaxy R dual-core smartphone – which as we mentioned in a previous article is a double of the hugely popular Samsung Galaxy S II – existed, the much-anticipated handset had unfortunately not been made official. That appears to have changed however, as the Samsung Galaxy R has now been officially launched.

According to Kunal over at sammyhub.com, the Samsung Galaxy R handset – which runs on the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system – measures in at just 9.55mm thick, and comes with a sophisticated metallic finish. Although the company has not revealed the exact processor, previous evidence points to it being powered by a dual-core Tegra 2.

The Samsung Galaxy R comes with a 4.19-inch WVGA Super Clear LCD screen, Music Player with SoundAlive EQ Music Recognition, a 5MP auto focus rear camera with LED flash and a 1.3MP front-facing camera. Not only is the handset capable of 720p (@30fps) video recording, it also supports full HD1080p video playback (WMV, MP4, Divx, H.264 B/P only).

In terms of connectivity, the Samsung Galaxy R comes with Bluetooth 3.0 + HS, Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) and Wi-Fi Direct. If the 8GB of internal memory just isn’t enough, then it can be by up to 32GB via its microSD card slot. The Galaxy R comes with a standard Li-Ion 1650mAh battery that provides up to 580 minutes (3G) talk time and up to 550 hours (3G) standby time.

Besides using the Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform, the Samsung Galaxy R also includes the company’s TouchWiz UI with various hubs. This includes the Social Hub, which combines the user’s calendar, contacts, emails and instant messaging, Readers Hub with access to more than 2.3 million books, Music Hub with access to over 14 million songs and a Game Hub.

The handset also comes with various other features such as Samsung Voice Command – an easy to use voice recognition service – and the ‘Find My Mobile’ functionality, which enables users to ring, track or even remotely lock their device in the instance that it gets lost or stolen. It also comes with a digital compass, a gyroscope and an accelerometer.

The Samsung Galaxy R should be available as from now in Europe, with other regions such as South East and West Asia, Middle East Asia and China getting the smartphone shortly after. Do you like the sound of the Samsung Galaxy R?

We’ve been hearing quite a lot of news regarding the much-anticipated HTC Sensation over the past few weeks, with the most recent being about its UK release. Not only have we told you today that the handset is coming to both O2 and Orange, but we also announced that it was up for pre-order on Three.

The Sensation 4G boasts a 4.3-inch qHD touch screen display, 1GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot and an 8MP rear camera with 1080p HD video capture.

Lately we have heard that the HTC Desire would not be getting an update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread, we asked whether this would prompt Desire owners to jump ship to iPhone, however we are now hearing that HTC has made a u-turn.

According to the official HTC UK Facebook page they will launch a HTC Desire update to Gingerbread, the statement reads: “Contrary to what we said earlier, we are going to bring Gingerbread to HTC Desire”, you can see the official post here.

We wonder whether HTC decided to bring this update due to the massive reaction which they must have received from HTC Desire owners, let’s face it there are millions of HTC Desire owners out there as it sold well in 2010 and helped HTC establish themselves in the high-end smartphone market and probably played a part in Android’s massive growth over the last 18 months.

Sadly HTC did not tell us when the update will arrive, however as you would expect it depends greatly on carriers, when we hear more we will keep you posted.

Following on from the obvious kick in the face for HTC Desire owners, we want to know where your smartphone future lies, after finding out that your handset isn’t good enough for an official upgrade to Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

We were surprised as much as you were when we read the news, but due to a ‘lack of memory’, the HTC Desire is offically doomed and will stay on Android 2.2 Froyo forever, unless of course you attempt to upgrade via alternative means.

Or you could simply upgrade your handset, which as frustrating as it may be for some of you, this is the option that most of you will now take. Considering the fact that you are probably still seething with HTC after their recent admission, are you planning to stay on Android or will you take a bold step, bid your farewells and move over to the iPhone community?

It may be a pretty drastic move for some of you, but let’s face it – you are not going to stick around with the original Desire much longer knowing that it won’t receive any more upgrades. Has another Android handset caught your eye, or have you decided that now is the perfect time to try out iOS.

Let us know what you plan to do, and your feelings towards HTC at the moment. You can read the user backlash over on Facebook here.

Back in February it was reported that HTC Desire owners should expect to get the Android update eventually according to a spokesman for the company. A mid May date was later given as a time scale for it to happen but this come and went, meanwhile owners of the Desire HD received it as planned. But what will be a big disappointment today is the news that HTC Desire owners have been left out with no 2.3 Android Gingerbread update.

The company has admitted defeat and announced via a Facebook post, that it has no plans now to bring the update to the handset. According to an article on Electronista the problems with the update was put down to the Desire not having enough memory.

They claimed to be working hard to get the update on the handset but couldn’t do it “without compromising the HTC Sense Experience.” The post went on to apologize for the news but there was not enough memory for Gingerbread and Sense to run side by side.

We have reported before that the new version of the HTC Sense UI would only work on the latest devices, and this news will feel like a kick in the teeth to the millions of Desire owners out there.

We have an update as HTC have now changed their mind and said the Desire will be getting Android Gingerbread, you can see it here for yourself.

After previously informing you about the official Gingerbread update for the Motorola Droid X smartphone, we now have similar news for those of you in possession of the Droid 2 Global handset, as Verizon has confirmed that the update is on the way for you soon as well.

Verizon hasn’t actually informed us when the update will be available, but an official document intercepted by Droid-Life shows evidence that the update is now ready, and the only thing that needs to happen now is for Verizon to push it out to handsets.

If you head over to Droid-Life, you’ll be able to see full details on what is included in the update. Aside from the interface changes you get from upgrading to Android 2.3 Gingerbread, key features also include a new download manager App, multi-touch key chording, dock icons, email and messaging fixes/enhancements, App and power management details, improved battery life via Bluetooth and much more.

If you have a Droid 2 Global, we strongly recommend you check out the change log for full information. It’s fair to say that the handset is pretty dated now, so this Gingerbread update couldnt have come at a better time. It may also sweeten the blow for those of you who don’t have the resources to upgrade to the sexy new Droid Bionic if and when it becomes available later on this Summer.

Are you waiting for Gingerbread on the Droid 2 Global?

There is now a new Samsung Smart TV app that allows you to use your Galaxy S II handset to control your TV. However, you need to make certain that you are running Android 2.3 Gingerbread or higher. This will turn your smartphone into a remote and game controller, making typing and searching much easier than the standard remote control.

The app is called Smart View and works with Series 7 and 8 of the Samsung Smart TV range. We are not certain what other handsets this app supports, but we do know for certain that it works with the Galaxy S II and will even allow you to control your Samsung Blu-ray player as well – only those with Smart functions.

We have heard from a number of readers who say that they find it hard to control game apps with the standard remote, so using your app makes things much easier. One would expect that this app would support the Galaxy Tab – hopefully the 10.1-inch version when it gets released this month.

Remember that you need to have to use your Wi-Fi in order for this to work, which should not be an issue for most homes. This is a lot like you can do with the iPad/iPhone and the Apple TV. This has been a very popular feature, so was inevitable that it would come to the Samsung Smart TV. For further details visit the Android Market.

It looks like Sony Ericsson has been keeping very busy over the past few months. Not only have they launched the new Xperia Play and Xperia Neo handsets, but they also unveiled the upcoming Xperia Mini and Mini Pro smartphones at the beginning of May.

Now it appears that they are working on a new smartphone, which comes in the form of the ST18i (codenamed Urushi). According to gsmarena.com, the ST18i is expected to run on the same hardware as the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc, but feature a smaller 3.2-inch display.

The guys at gsmarena.com managed to get hold of some new images of the device recently and according to their tipster, the previously leaked ST18i smartphone will come with an Adreno 205 GPU and have a 1GHz Snapdragon chipset with a Scorpion CPU under its hood.

Meanwhile the ST18i Urushi’s display will reportedly feature a resolution of 854 x 480, and come with the proprietary Bravia Mobile engine. The handset will run on the Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread OS, and have the same 8MP camera as the Arc, which comes with LED flash and 720p video capture.

There has been no mention of pricing, but the ST18i smartphone is slated to launch sometime in September. You can view the images via the gsmarena.com link. Are you looking forward to the official announcement of the Sony Ericsson ST18i Urushi phone?

We have some important news for those of you with a Motorola Droid X, but have still not updated to the official Gingerbread software that Verizon are rolling out. We’re hearing reports that the update is causing some handsets to freeze, with some even unresponsive after installing.

For some Droid X owners, this is probably just another day at the office, as it’s not the first time the handset has suffered some problems. However, the new Gingerbread update is causing considerable distress to certain users, although we’re not sure how widespread this is at the moment.

According to MobileCrunch, some users have installed Gingerbread on their handsets and have been met with a frozen handset soon afterwards. When this happens, it requires users to pull their battery out for it to turn on again – which is never a good sign.

Worse yet, there’s also a few reports that handsets are not turning on at all following the Gingerbread update. Motorola or Verizon haven’t issued any statements regarding this, but we bet they will if the problems continue pouring in. Let us know if you have any problems similar to the ones mentioned above, after installing Gingerbread.

We have just informed you about some great news for potential EVO 3D buyers, and now we have some equally great news for EVO 4G owners – yes we haven’t forgotten about you. It looks like you’ll be getting a surprise official upgrade to Android Gingerbread soon, very soon according to reports.

It has been revealed that the EVO 4G could be enjoying a slice of gingerbread by Monday 6th June, according to images provided by the guys over at Engadget. Two images reveal official Sprint documents showing instructions for the forthcoming update, as well as the 6/6/11 marked down as update day on their calender.

The documents also suggest that the update build for the official Gingerbread update will be 4.22.651.2 and that it will take place OTA on your handsets. On a side note, we’re also hearing that the update will bring fixes involving SMS and also a fix for problems with Gmail services that some of you have been having.

The question on our minds though, is who is still rocking a HTC EVO 4G loud and proud? There are an awful amount of tempting devices available to buy now, with many more set to follow this Summer. Ever thought about upgrading this year, or are you happy with your EVO?
