We have some good news for those of you who are becoming increasingly frustrated over the fact that the new AirPrint features on iOS 4.2 only work with selected printers. We have found a few tricks which will let you use AirPrint with any printer.

As reported from BGR, iOS hackers have once again worked their magic, and we can now confirm that there are solutions to get AirPrint working on any printer, for both Mac and Windows users.

BGR has provided the steps needed to get the AirPrint hack working on a Mac computer, as users will need to download some software appropriately named ‘AirPrint Hacktivator’. They have also updated their article which provides details on how Windows users can join in on the fun as well.

Head to BGR for full instructions for Mac and Windows. There is also a video guide if you get stuck too. Let us know if it works for you.

Monday was a great day if you had an iOS device, as the latest 4.2 firmware update was made available. I feel like I have been talking about AirPrint (one of the feature updates) too much, but there are things that need explaining. The first was how to use the new feature; the second was what were the compatible printers. Now I have something that I know you will want to know, Printopia for the Mac will make every printer compatible.

My HP printer is over a year old, and it is for that reason that it will not support the new AirPrint feature; this either meant purchasing yet another new printer or not worrying about printing from my iPhone 4 or iPad. So you can imagine how happy I am about Printopia?

If you have a Mac and an iOS device, then Printopia could be the best piece of software you have ever installed – ok I am making more of this than what it is. 9 to 5 Mac tells us not to worry about installing the software, as it will not make any changes to your file system.

The only downside I can see is having to pay $9.95 to be able to use AirPrint with all printers – some might say that is a small price to pay. I will not try and tell you that you should download this software, but I will say that spending $10 is better than spending 10 to 20 times that on a new printer – would you not agree?

iOS 4.2 was released on Monday, 22nd November, and there were two main features that we had been waiting on, AirPlay and AirPrint. Some of you may have struggled to understand how to use these new features, so we have a how to guide for you to read here. The next question on our mind is which printers support Apple’s new feature?

We thought we would take a look at the HP printers, as this is the brand that offers the most support for AirPrint. Hewlett Packard has a PDF that offers details on all supported printers, and you can see that it has been broken down into three sections, “Already compatible with Apple iOS 4.2”, “May require a firmware upgrade”, and “Will require a firmware upgrade on December 27”. A complete list of all these printers can be found here.

As you can imagine, there have been a lot of questions regarding ePrint, and HP has the answers to those. These questions range from wanting to know about Apple’s AirPrint and HP printers, to how to get it. The answers are simple and straightforward. Let us know how you got on if you have a compatible printer?

There has been a lot of confusion over Apple’s AirPrint and HP’s ePrint, but the two are different things. The former allows iOS devices access to supported AirPrint printers, while the latter allows you to print from anywhere in the world. For more details on this visit the HP support page.

Well iOS 4.2 is now here and one would assume that a huge percentage of you would have updated your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch by now. There are a number of features that will be of use to you, but it is AirPlay and AirPrint that some of you will be most interested in.

However, getting them to work is the tricky thing. I wanted to understand how to use both these features, but was unable to work out just how to do this. So I felt it only right that I should do a bit of research for you, and it is not as easy as starting up an app.

Lets start with AirPlay; Rene Ritchie, from TiPB had the information that we needed.. The first thing you need to do is go to your photo album and select a video, then double tap the home screen and swipe twice to the left. The video will then stop and you will see an icon on the right, touch that and then select Apple TV, its as easy as that. I do not have Apple TV, so I would assume that is the reason why no Apple TV selection came up on my iPhone.

For more details on just how to do this view the video below.

To use AirPrint you will need to have a compatible printer, which James Galbraith from Macworld has supplied on PC World. You will then need to make certain that your iOS device is connected to the network that your printer is on, you will then see a new entry called ‘Print’ when you click the share menu in either Mail, Safari, and Photos.

Once you have found the supported printer you then make the selection of how many copies you wish to make; its as easy as that. Sadly I do not have a supported printer, so was unable to test this latest feature.

Have you managed to try either AirPlay or AirPrint? What do you think, was it worth the wait?

With the news that iOS 4.2 will be made available for download today, there are two things that are a big deal with this latest mobile OS update. The first is that the iPad will get a much-needed refresh, and the second is that AirPrint will be part of it, contrary to recent rumors.

For those of you who do not know, AirPrint will be able to facilitate wireless printing of documents from the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad, only those that will use the new iOS 4.2 OS. However, not all printers will be compatible with this latest feature.

We will now wait to see what vendor options there will be, but we can be certain that they will now be keeping a close eye on the situation. According to an article on Macworld, vendors are keeping their options open, such as offering updates to allow AirPrint’s capabilities or just consider it for the future.

Lemark has come out and admitted that none of their products will support AirPrint, whereas Kyocera is now working with Apple on an agreement. Epson is to allow for AirPrint support for certain documents, such as Excel, Word, and PDF etc.

Kodak is also considering AirPrint, and Xerox will work hard to offer the feature on their range of printers. We do not know what HP plans to do, which is a shame, as that is the brand that I have sitting on my shelf.

We learned yesterday that iOS 4.2 would not come with AirPrint, as this was one of the better features of the new software, I was not happy. However, Steve Jobs has responded to this by saying that we should not believe what we read. Well, this is what he was alleged to have said in response to an email sent by a MacRumors forum member.

Steve was sent an email saying how upset the person was that he was looking forward to using AirPrint on his iPad with iOS 4.2, but was unhappy with Apple for pulling it. This feature allows you to connect your iOS device to your wireless printer, so would have been perfect for the business user.

MacRumors is not sure if they believe that the email from Steve Jobs was real or not, I guess we will get to learn the truth tomorrow when the new mobile OS is rumored to go live. Even if AirPrint is part of the new iOS 4.2, it will not be compatible with all printers, so this could force you to either purchase a new model or maybe the likes of HP will offer software updates?

Apart from AirPrint, what other new features are you looking forward to? I know for certain that iPad owners are the most excited, and will make the Apple tablet a more complete device.
