Apple’s Let’s talk iPhone event has just finished and we now know that the 5th-generation iPhone is called the iPhone 4S and is not a hugely different to the iPhone 4 in terms of looks and specs, however Apple did reveal that iOS 5 will bring AirPlay Mirroring to compliant device, so we thought we would talk about this in more detail.

AirPlay Mirroring is a feature which we have previously seen running on the iPad 2, it basically allows you to mirror what’s on your iPad 2′s display and beam it wirelessly to your HDTV via Apple TV and then use the iDevice’s built in sensors to act as a controller, this means its accelerometer and touch screen display can offer Wii U-like functionality – neat eh?

You can see our demo of the AirPlay Mirroring here, up until today we weren’t sure if this functionality would ever come to Apple’s iPhone, but now we can confirm that if you have Apple TV (second generation) and iOS 5 installed on iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS (when it arrives October 12th) you should be able to take advantage of this new feature.

If you don’t have an Apple TV set up don’t worry, Apple has revealed a wired dongle which will allow for high-definition wired mirroring, however at the time of this post there was no indication as to how much this dongle will cost – you can see an image we found over at Engadget which gives us a glimpse at this accessory.

It is up to Apple and app developers to make the most of this functionality, the potential is pretty staggering if you think about it, especially with the iPhone 4S which has twice the processing power of the iPhone 4 and seven times its graphical performance – we envisage people using the iPhone 4S as a games console and controller thanks to the mirroring functionality which iOS 5 brings to the table – what will you use AirPlay Mirroring for?

Denon are better known for their quality AV receivers and Hi-Fi separate components, which are often highly regarded for sound quality among audiophiles and consumers alike. Now we can tell you that Denon reveal the DNP-720AE AirPlay enabled audio player.

The Japanese company has revealed the new network audio player that according to TechRadar is aimed to mix modern day music use but with Hi-Fi sound quality. Owners of the new unit will be able to stream music from networked connected PCs or NAS drive via a Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection. There will also be able to access Last.FM and Napster.

Other supported platforms include MP3, WMA, WAV, AAC, FLAC and FLAC 96/24. Denon’s long history with sound quality has been utilized with the units 24 bit/192Khz DACs and ‘simple and straight’ circuit design.

The Denon will have to be hooked up to a stereo amplifier via the phono outputs on the back to hear the quality sound, so you will need a spare set on your amp. Like a lot of audio equipment now the DNP-720AE is AirPlay capable so users can stream their music direct from an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and from the iTunes library on your PC or Mac.

It is also Windows 7 certified for ‘Play To’ on Windows Media Player 12 and higher, and it can use the company’s remote iOS application with an Android version rumored to be on route. On the front is an USB port for content stored on portable storage devices, and you also get an AM/FM tuner built-in.

The Denon unit will be available in black and silver finishes and will be in stores at the end of the month for £430/$500. Will you be interested in the Denon DNP-720AE?

If you take pride in your home cinema set up, you will most likely own a receiving unit. One of the most popular manufacturers of these types of equipment is Pioneer and you will be pleased to know that they have announced the latest line of Elite VSX receiver unit.

What’s most intriguing about this new batch is the company will be offering Apple AirPlay support as well as their own Air Jam compatible systems. These new units include the VSX-53, VSX-52, VSX-51, VSX-50 and VSX-40. Each support external zones for multi-room playback and offer seven channels of no more than 110W. Also all except the VSX-40 will feature DLNA streaming media support.

Pioneer’s Air Jam feature will up to four separate devices like iPhones, iPod Touches and iPads to contribute to the music playlist as long as they each have Pioneer’s free app and are hooked up via the AS-BT200 Bluetooth adapter which is optional and will set you back $99.

The five units will become available during the summer and will range in price, depending which model you prefer, from $450 up to $1,100. Check out the official website for more details about which models feature what.

iPad owners will be pleased with a new feature that is coming with the iOS 5 release called AirPlay Mirroring. This means that you will not only be able to play games on your HDTV, but also view your entire tablet device on your TV. This will work just how it does when using your iPad to view your movies via Apple TV.

There is a way to do this at the moment, but it means that you have to use a connector; all this is done through the air. Apple is calling this and other such features “PC Free.” At the time Apple did not offer many details, but they have now updated their website with additional information.

Not only can you use this feature at home, but also at work on a secure network. Whatever you have on your iPad can be streamed to your TV, although you will still need Apple TV to do this. This is not that big of a deal, considering that the cost of the device is just $99. Just think how cool it will be to be able to view your photos, videos or even play some of your apps on a larger screen. Although we are a little worried how they will look in a much larger ratio?

We have to wonder if there will be any sort of delay while using the new AirPlay Mirroring for iPad 2 feature? We have been in a number of places where they have a lag with their Wi-Fi; this could certainly affect how responsive it will be. Which iOS 5 features grabbed you the most?

If you want to stream content around your home but don’t have access to any of Apple’s devices there are other ways to achieve this. Today we can tell you about a service called DLNA which is the alternative to Apple’s AirPlay.

Joe Cox from What Hi-Fi is reporting that if you want the capability to stream images, movies and music around your home the Digital Living Network Alliance may be the answer. Also many consumers may have devices already around the home which have DLNA available. Many devices such as Blu-ray players, TVs, and smartphones have the facility built in without owners realizing.

DLNA wants to emerge from Apple’s shadow with its partners and products to show consumers the alternative when streaming content around the home. DLNA is a collection of over 200 companies which wants to make sharing content between devices simple. Two or more of any DLNA devices can share content via your home network.

Products from the likes of Panasonic, Nokia, Onkyo, Samsung, and even the PS3 are DLNA certified to allow content to be sent around your home. By 2014 the number of DLNA certified devices is expected to reach two billion, with 11,000 products already on the DLNA list. Compare that to the amount of products that support AirPlay and you see a major difference.

You can get a free application which provides all the devices that support DLNA, and is available for Android, BlackBerry, and iOS devices. There is also software available to upgrade some devices that are not already DLNA certified.

Do you have many DLNA certified devices?

With Apple’s continued dominance of the technology market, their AirPlay feature is now also becoming increasingly popular and manufacturers are jumping on the bandwagon. Philips is the latest to hop aboard with their Fidelio SoundSphere speakers.

These Wi-Fi devices are setup as two separate units featuring antenna-like tweeters that sit in an up-right position allowing free flowing 360 degree sound. As explained in an article by Paul Lamkin at Pocket-lint, this is a ‘deeper and wider audio impression with minimized interferences.’

The AirPlay ability enables the sound system setup to connect up to your iTunes music wirelessly over a network, from your Mac, iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad. Alternatively you can dock your device using the included station.

There is a downside to these stylish Wi-Fi speakers however as they will set you back a pretty penny, at €799, that’s about $1,100. For more details about the Fidelio SoundSphere speakers check out the Pocket-lint link above or you can read the full press release at Engadget. What do you think of them? Would you pay that sort of money just for style? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

During the past few days a number of hacks were used for the new Apple TV, which was due to a certain iOS 4.2 update. While we thought we would offer you a hack roundup since the firmware update, there only seems to be two worth mentioning, Airplay and HTML5.

The AirPlay hack was thanks to Cydia, and allowed a guy to stream live TV content from his Apple iPad direct to his Apple TV. 9 to 5 Mac believes that this is just the start and more is to come. What other things have you managed to do with AirPlay, let our readers know by adding a comment below?

Another hack showed you Web browsing and Last.fm; 9 to 5 Mac now has a video walkthrough for you to view. In this video you will see HTML5 video playing on the new Apple TV device.

With so many hacks coming up it is hard to pick what ones we need to cover, what ones do you think deserve a mention the most? Maybe you do not hack, tell us your reasons?

Have you been one of those affected by recent problems with Apple TV, more details can be found in our recent post.

Well iOS 4.2 is now here and one would assume that a huge percentage of you would have updated your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch by now. There are a number of features that will be of use to you, but it is AirPlay and AirPrint that some of you will be most interested in.

However, getting them to work is the tricky thing. I wanted to understand how to use both these features, but was unable to work out just how to do this. So I felt it only right that I should do a bit of research for you, and it is not as easy as starting up an app.

Lets start with AirPlay; Rene Ritchie, from TiPB had the information that we needed.. The first thing you need to do is go to your photo album and select a video, then double tap the home screen and swipe twice to the left. The video will then stop and you will see an icon on the right, touch that and then select Apple TV, its as easy as that. I do not have Apple TV, so I would assume that is the reason why no Apple TV selection came up on my iPhone.

For more details on just how to do this view the video below.

To use AirPrint you will need to have a compatible printer, which James Galbraith from Macworld has supplied on PC World. You will then need to make certain that your iOS device is connected to the network that your printer is on, you will then see a new entry called ‘Print’ when you click the share menu in either Mail, Safari, and Photos.

Once you have found the supported printer you then make the selection of how many copies you wish to make; its as easy as that. Sadly I do not have a supported printer, so was unable to test this latest feature.

Have you managed to try either AirPlay or AirPrint? What do you think, was it worth the wait?
