Back in October of last year we told you that both Sony and Panasonic were cutting back on production of flat panel TVs as demand for new unit’s falls away. Now today we can tell you that the remaining Hitachi TV plant is to close.

The company is set to stop production of TVs in Japan and is looking to convert the plant so it can produce semiconductor products and LCD projectors, which according to a report on What Hi-Fi will be more profitable. There has been months of speculation regarding such a move, and the company has said price competition was the reason behind the decision.

It was Hitachi’s last TV plant in Japan and based at Gifu, but the production there was relativity small compared to others, with only 250 staff making about 100,000 units per month. Hitachi has recently outsourced production of its TVs to other countries such as Taiwan, and purchasing products from other manufacturers and just adding the Hitachi brand name.

Hitachi has been trying to make the plant more profitable by bringing more components from other companies, but has now reached this decision and will cease TV production at the plant in September. Ahead of this it will move over its TV business away from the consumer electronics division, and place it into its consumer marketing operation.

This will basically mean the company will only be selling TVs instead of manufacturing them. This news comes with the ongoing issues surrounding TV production in the country that has been affecting many companies.

Have you ever purchased a Hitachi TV?

Hitachi has just announced its new Deskstar 5K4000 hard drives, what’s great about these new hard disk drives is the fact that they are available in capacities of up to 4TB – which roughly equates to the ability to store 1000 hours of high-definition video, 4000 hours of standard video, 1400 movies or 1,000,000 songs.

The 4TB drive should become available in January for just shy of $400, you can see the full data sheet here, things worth mentioning include the use of the SATA 6Gb/s interface, its 3.5-inch form-factor, the 32MB data buffer, the use of CoolSpin technology and great power efficiency. Whilst we are talking about energy efficiency it is worth knowing that the 5K4000 drives use 28% less power than Hitachi’s 7K3000 models.

Hitachi is also promoting the fact that these drives are very quite during operation, even during seek times you can expect no noise louder than 2.5 (decibels we presume). Before you get too excited it is worth knowing that certain operating systems – the image below makes things a little more clear, if you are still unsure check out this link.

Hitachi has also announced the Touro Desk, by the looks of things these hard drives are external versions of the Deskstar 5K4000, capacities available range from 1TB to 4TB and there will be both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 to choose from. You can see the full data sheet for the USB 2.0 models here, whilst the USB 3.0 variant’s data sheet can be seen here. Engadget tells us that the 4TB Touro Desk will cost roughly $420.

The good news about these drives hitting the market is the fact that 2TB and 3TB drive prices should drop as a result of this, however the floods in Thailand probably will nullify this.

Will you be buying a 4TB hard disk drive in 2012?

In the run up to the release of the iPhone 4S there was plenty of speculation that a new handset would have a bigger display compared to previous models. There has even been talk recently that the iPhone 5 was dropped temporally by the company before the iPhone 4S. There is now rumors that Hitachi and Sony are going to supply Apple with 4-inch LCD displays, so could it be for the iPhone 5?

AppleInsider are reporting that the displays are meant to be hitting the market next year, and for an unspecified iOS device. There are other rumors that suggest that Sony and Hitachi will also team up with Toshiba Mobile Display Co., Ltd, to create Japan Display by the spring of 2012.

These reports come shortly after we told you that production had allegedly begun for the displays for the iPad 3, with Sharp being one of the companies supplying Apple. Sharp are set to get investment from Apple for the company’s IGZO LCD panels, which will allow thinner designs of the iPhone and iPad with improved battery life.

The Sharp technology provides power consumption almost as good as OLED panels but only 25 percent thicker according to Jeffries analyst Peter Misek. The same sources are also claiming that Apple will be using a Taiwanese company to provide panels for a totally redesigned iPad 4, which will be manufactured by a new process.

Whenever we do see an all new iPhone many will be hoping it does bring with it a larger screen, and a 4-inch display seems a popular choice among iPhone fans. Would you be happy with an iPhone and a 4-inch screen?

For those of you that do not know, Hitachi is a Japanese company that specializes in high-technological products such as projectors, camcorders and TVs. The company today announced that their latest Connected TV models will begin shipping with the Espial TV Browser into the Japanese market, becoming the first manufacturer in Japan to do so.

The aim of this deal is become one of the highest quality TV providers in the Japanese market. The models in the Connected TV range that will feature the integrated browser are the L42-XP07, L37-XP07, L32-XP07 LCDs and the P50-XP07, P46-XP07, P42-XP07 PDPs.

As explained in the article at MSPNews the Espial TV Browser operates both BML and HTML modes reducing ROM resources as it is only one-codebase for two browsers as opposed to two. Also the web page loading performance is best because of its architecture.

Japan Country Sales Director of Espial, Yukio Kanemori said the company ‘are pleased to be helping Hitachi take a market leadership position’ and ‘look forward to working with them.’ You can read more details about what the two companies thoughts are in the full article by clicking the link above.

Western Digital has recently announced that they have agreed to buy rival Hitachi Ltd, according to a recent article posted on Bloomerg the deal is worth roughly $4.3 billion.

The two companies have been competing for years, however the market is changing due to different types of storage now available, it is thought that hard-disk drive shipments will drop by about 4 percent this quarter, which many believe is mainly due to the influx of tablets which use solid-state disk and flash storage instead.

Last year Western Digital attempted to buy Seagate, however there were concerns surrounding antitrust issues therefore no deal ever materialized, it is thought that Western Digital will now target Seagate’s enterprise customers.

Before any talk of acquisitions arose Western Digital was the largest hard-drive manufacturer, Seagate was the second largest and Hitachi third, this deal surely means that Western Digital will undoubtedly be the largest manufacturer of had drives for years to come.

According to Bloomberg WD shipped 52.2 million drives in Q4 2010, Seagate came close with 48.9 million shipped units and Hitachi came in third place with 30.3 million units shipped, it is hard to see how Seagate will battle a company who will have such a large part of the HDD market, but Seagate has been around for 31 years and will undoubtedly plan to keep pushing forward with larger, faster and quieter drives.

If you would like to read more about this deal check out Bloomberg for full details.

Hitachi GST has recently announced two new hard drive families which are aimed to deliver high reliability, quiet acoustics and low power consumption, one of which has a 2.5-inch form-factor, whilst the other has a 3.5-inch form-factor.

The 2.5-inch CinemaStar C5K750 will be available in three different capacities, 500GB, 640GB and 750GB, these drives generate just 2.3 idle bels and consume just 1.5W of power during read/write operations.
