In recent months there seems to be a certain craze when it comes to 3D printers, maybe this is because their price has come down, or the fact that there is now a greater choice for smaller versions suitable for the home? These smaller 3D printers are great for creating a number of products, and certainly offer a great service.

However, some designer’s feel as though they could go smaller, which is why there is now a Kickstarter project for a handheld 3D printer, with a price that is below $100. The idea and that price do look very seductive, but once you begin to look at a recent review it’s clear that there is some deception going on.

We don’t mean this in an illegal way, but when you are given a description of something, you expect it to be that very thing, but when you find out that it does not do what you expect, that’s when we feel as though we have been deceived.

You can see in the first hands-on with the 3Doodler 3D pen that it does not print out 3D objects, but rather draws them by using a plastic kind of substance. The easiest way to explain this is taking a glue gun and then starting to draw in the air to create a piece of art, or something like that anyway. Okay, so we know that glue guns cannot do this, but you understand the principle.

The Kickstarter project needed to raise $30,00 in total, but has managed to raise $35,619 with 35 days left to go, so seems like a very popular ideas to some people. Would you class this a handheld 3D printer or a glorified glue gun?

After watching numerous movies that featured robots we’re sure that there are a few of you out that who would like your own, not to become a slave for you, just so you can say to your friends you have your own robot. For a while now this only seemed like a dream, but you’ll be pleased to learn that there are people out there who are making this a reality.

There is a chance that you can soon create a robot with 3D printers thanks to a sculptor and model marker, where as you can see in the video below has been making his since 2012. The project is called InMoov and has seen the French man build two arms and has already begun work on the head and torso, and while there seems like a way to go, we find it awesome how the robot can already understand and respond to voice commands – hope it’s better than Siri.

While this robot has yet to be completed you can already start work on your own, but only if you have a 3D printer, and not the small one you have in your home. If you head over to this website, Langevin has uploaded a series of design specifications, but remember that this will take time, so be prepared to wait a while for your results.

As you would imagine printing those parts is just the first step, the next will be to assemble it; again Langevin has supplied instructions for you to put your robot together as well– just hope you don’t have the same idea as Howard from the Big bang Theory.

A Dutch architect known as Janjaap Ruijssenaars is aiming to build an ‘endless’ house with a 3D printer that shows one surface folded in the same vein as the endless möbius band, in which ceilings and floors transform into each other along with the inside and out. His intentions are to print out the project called Landscape House by 2014 at the latest.

Those not familiar with the Möbius strip – it is a simple way of connecting a strip of paper together in such a way that if an ant were to walk the surface, it would be able to return to the same spot having walked along the length of the strip without ever crossing an edge. Ruijssenaars with the help of mathematician and artist Rinus Roelofs, also from the Universe Architecture in Amsterdam, are aiming to develop this home with the use of 3D printing technology.

Their intentions are to print the building in pieces first and then attach them together to make the endless finished article, which according to a report on 3ders.org will take about a year and a half to finish. The plan is to print every piece in sizes of 6 x 9 meters, and this will be done with the use of D-Shape, a 3D printer designed by Italian inventor Enrico Dini.

This will be the first 3D printed house in the world and the landscape house is developed for joining Europan, which is the European competition for young spatial designers with great ideas. The landscape house is said to be a landscape in the landscape, so we are intrigued what would keep the ceiling from collapsing or is it the floor? Alternatively, you could have a running track through the middle and run miles around the house.

We have also added a video below giving further information.

If you were to tell someone that you were getting a 3D printer in your home your friends would believe that you have gone crazy, as they would presume that you have just made a huge space in order to take possession of one of those extremely large machines seen in factories. However, times have changed somewhat and now with a device like Cubify’s 3D printer with its lower price point you’ll be able to wow your friends.

This 3D printer (as seen here) was on show during CES and as you would imagine got lost in the thousands of other products on show during the event. However, we thought we would give it the attention it deserves because the Cube 3D printer is just the latest in a line of other Cube based printers from the company, such as the CubeX from last year.

You might be a little surprised when you take shipment of this printer because you might mistake it for a coffee machine and place it on your kitchen counter, although the start price of $1299 will tell you that this is not a machine to make your favorite beverage.

While there are other 3D printers on the market how the Cube differs is where it aims to be a more affordable 3D printer for the home, and at 19 pound when compared to the massive 32 pounder of the Makerbot 3D printer and a starting price of $1750 it’s easy to see which one we would go for – well depending that those features are up to that of its larger rival of course. Below we have a video comparison for you of the Up! Mini, Solidoodle 2 and the Cube 3D.
