Back in August we reported that the Ford Edge had received a small makeover, now the Blue Oval has another model from the line, the 2011 Ford Edge Sport. This version will also come with the MyFord Touch interface, which received a huge update back in July, but there have been reports that the interface is still laggy.

Matt Burns from CrunchGear has been spending some time with the new Edge Sport, and was shocked at how space age it all feels. Looking at the dash it reminds me of the Starship Enterprise – the one from the Star Trek reboot. You still have a traditional analog speedometer, but there are LCD screens on either side.

However, the business end of things is the main screen in the centre of the dash. The screen is 8-inches in size, so more than large enough to see what you are controlling. It seems a shame that Ford stuck with Microsoft for the interface and did not go with Apple, as there is at least a 2-second delay after you pressed the screen for the action to take place – this will become tiresome after a while.

Burns says that this is only a minor issue, and will not seem that bad once you get used to it – but with the kind of technology available, this should not be happening. Do you think that Ford should ask Apple to design their MyFord Touch interface?

Ford has certainly been busy in 2010, not only have they been working on the new Fiesta and Focus, but also on the 2011 Ford Edge as well. The Blue Oval knows that their rivals have been pumping out new models, but the Detroit automaker believes that improving on current models instead of designing a totally new vehicle is the answer.

The Edge crossover has been growing in popularity over the past four years, so thought all what was needed was a refresh of the current model, but will it pay off? The interior and exterior has had a mini-facelift along with new engine choices with more fuel efficient options. (The Ecoboost will not be available until late 2011.)

Zach Bowman from Autoblog has now driven the new 2011 Ford Edge and believes that it will be a head-turner at the mall. This will be because the front-end has had a revamp to its styling, which as you can see by these images has much more chrome.

It’s all great having all these new design features, but the one area where the new Ford CUV could suffer is its price. Bowman believes that $30,000 is too high a price to pay, and maybe Ford should consider reducing this by $5,000, but would you agree?

The 3.5-liter V6 of the 2011 Ford Edge now has its official MPG rating from the EPA, and the results are very good, as the CUV tops its class. The vehicle offers 19 miles per gallon urban and 27mpg on the highway, which just edges out the Lincoln MKX.

Its closet domestic rival is the 3.0-liter V6 Chevrolet Equinox, besting it by 1 and 2mpg respectively. The thing that impresses Sam Abuelsamid from Autoblog most is the fact that the Ford engine offers more power – yet is more fuel-efficient.

However, when you look at the combined rating it does not top its class, the 2011 Ford Edge has a combined rating of 22 mpg, the 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe V6 betters that with a rating of 23 miles per gallon.

Although this is great news, the rating that we want to know the most is for the 2.0-liter Ecoboost engine. Ford will hope that the ratings are better than the four-cylinder Equinox, its rating is 22 mpg city and 32 miles per gallon highway.

The 2011 Ford Edge was expected to be released some time in June, but the Ford website release date still says “Coming Summer 2010”, so we still do not know. Looking at the design of this Range Rover wannabe it does not look that different to the current version – that’s until you look under the hood and the interior.

The Car Connection points out that the outside is more aggressive, but still offers a sensible a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost engine, which his expected to deliver 27MPG. There are two larger engines, a 3.5-liter V-6 and a 3.7-liter V-6.

The base price for the 2011 Ford Edge is just over $27,000 and increases to $35,000. The interior of the outgoing model was considered cheap and plastically, thankfully the Blue Oval has realized this and has now made necessary improvements to give it a more up market look and feel.

When Ford release the new 2011 Edge it will be in direct competition with the Acura MDX, Audi Q5 and the Lexus RX350. Although Left Lane News reports that Ford has a quieter model.
