We still do not know what to class the Volt as, is it an EV, Hybrid or something else? However, there is no denying what the 2012 Ford Focus Electric is, and being based on a car that has already proven itself and will help sales. We know that the 2012 model will be a complete refresh, and we already know how popular the current model has been.

The next car is the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell; there are a number of things going for this model, such as its 0-62mph time of 3.8 seconds. However, it is the $307,000 price tag that could go against it – not exactly as cheap as the Nissan Leaf now.

Finally we could not talk about the best electric vehicles at Detroit without mentioning the Tesla Model S, which you can see a video of here. This is much cheaper than the Mercedes, but the $100,000 price means that it will lack in a few features. However, Tesla Motors has decided to make the Model S large enough for up to 7 passengers.

The 2011 Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid is available now, it is VW’s first vehicle to pair a 3.0 liter supercharged V6 engine with an electric motor, this combined provides 380hp and allows you to hit 60mph in just 6.2 seconds, as Engadget point out this is pretty impressive for a 5,000lb SUV.

You can see a full gallery of Touareg Hybrid photos here, according to AutoWeek it retails for roughly $61,000, you can see their fully detailed review of this SUV here following 7 days of usage here, overall they seem happy with it, however they were quite unimpressed by the 20.8 mpg it delivered.

The Telegraph tells us that the price of the new C-class will start at £25,515 when it goes on sale in March. There are three models; the cheapest mentioned above is the 156bhp C180, next is the 170bhp 220 CDi BlueEfficiency, which will cost £27,870. Finally we have the 204bhp C250 CDI turbodiesel, the cost will be £33,265.

The new C-class range will now come with a seven-speed torque converter autobox; although these are said to be more economical, they are not as efficient as the manual versions. Having looked into this a little further, it seems that this new model was just an announcement, as Autoweek reports that it will not be on public until the Genava Auto Show, which is in March.

Nico Schmidt from the Dow Jones Newswires has reported on WSJ that Mercedes hopes that it is cars like the new C-class and others currently on sale will allow them to have an even better year than 2010 – recent recalls would not have helped their cause though. We have to wonder how much of a market there is for such cars now; considering the current financial climate – one would expect the likes of Kia to increase its sales rather than the more expensive brands?

Let us take a little look at the schedule for each event, as well as take a look at a few others that will take place this year. We know that the Detroit show begins on January 10th, but the public will have to wait until the 15th to gain access to what the top carmakers have planned for us this year. However, the likes of Autoblog and Inside Line will give us an insight to each of these vehicles before the public dates.

The NAIAS website has a huge deal of information available, and for those attending will certainly need to view the virtual show floor. This will allow you to navigate around the show on your computer or smartphone. For more details visit the official NAIAS website.

The Portland Auto Show begins on January 27th – so not long after Detroit has closed its doors. Not many shows like this allow you to test drive new vehicles, but GM, KIA, Honda and VW will be on hand to offer you the chance to drive one of their new vehicles. Finally we have the Philly Auto Show starting on January 29th, so will crossover into the Portland show for one day. The Philadelphia show will go on for 9 days, and will give you the chance to see some of the cars that you might have missed during Detroit, more details here.

Looking at the video that we have embedded for you below Hyundai is not giving much away, as they have kept things very dark. We can tell right away that the automaker has not spent much on making the video – seems like they have gone for the subtle / intriguing approach instead.

The video starts off very dark and then you will be met with a number of captions at the bottom, such as fuel-economy and those sexy blue LED lights at the front. Engadget has updated their post, as two readers have managed to work on a still taken from the video and made them much lighter, this allows us to see the outline of the Hyundai Veloster.

Drew Johnson from Left lane News has been looking at some of the facts and figures of the Veloster, and we were interested to learn that it will be not only cheaper than the Genesis coupe, but more fuel efficient as well.
