Compaq CQ-50 139WM Laptop

November 6, 2008     Leave a Comment

This is the HP Compaq CQ-50 139WM laptop computer, which has some nice features for the price. The key features include an average 2048MB DDR2 of memory and a 2.00 GHz Intel Celeron Processor 575 processor.

The hard drive has 160GB of storage and a 5400RPM, the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD uses shared memory (this is not the best option), and the screen looks great at 15.4-inches and featuring HP’s BrightView technology.

Hewlett-Packard’s CQ50 139WM runs on Windows Vista Home Basic and also features a SuperMulti 8X DVD±R/RW drive, 802.11b/g WLAN, Integrated Microphone, 3 USB ports, and a 6-Cell Lithium-Ion battery. While it’s not a high spec laptop, the price Walmart has today at $298 in-store is fantastic.

Wow! $298 at Walmart Stores. That’s an awesome deal even for a Nerd like myself.
I’ve been to four Walmart Stores here in the Orlando area this morning and every one of them said they didn’t know about the Compaq laptop deal, not even the Store Managers, so I’m still searching locally for one, or maybe two or three.

According to Walmart’s website, this laptop is not even listed. This site says it is in the stores. What is true? Thank you

  3. James on November 6th, 2008 11:18 pm

It’s in stores from this sat.

  4. Mitch on November 6th, 2008 11:32 pm

This price will be in effect on Saturday Nov. 8 in a pre Black Friday event. Have to be early as everyone will want one at this price.

This is where u can find the information. It is an in store special that starts this
Saturday at 8 am. Eastern. Walmart usually runs in store specials every weekend
from now til Christmas so save the page and happy shopping

  6. Billy on November 7th, 2008 2:44 am

It is called a loss leader in case you are not familiar with them. You and 1000 other people run to the store for a unit prices 125.00 less than the competition. (That is what I found it all over the web for, 450.00)

When you dont, and you wont, get one, you’ll buy something else instead! Hence, Walmart’s plan worked! Or you will wait for 8 hours to save 150.00 instead of going to work that day and maybe the the lucky 1 person that will actually get this item. Its not a lottery, Walmart doesnt have to furnish transaction information to the state to prove they had 8!

THe computer is no good anyway. Save your time and money for a better one without the dreaded Compaq name on it.!

Good luck! Dont forget to wake up at 5 am on your day off!

    Ingenius!

  7. Peter on November 7th, 2008 2:54 pm

Hey, Billy. Did you read the ad? The laptop goes on sale on SATURDAY. Not gonna be missing work anyway, because it’s the WEEKEND.

Still, not sure if I’m going to bother with this. Wal-Mart’s website very sneakily does NOT list the full rundown of specs for this model anywhere on their website, beyond the very simplistic and vague 2-line description in the sale ad graphic. I can’t even find specs on Compaq/HP’s website.

Notice how most Compaq model numbers end in “US” but this one ends in “WM.”

    http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_query=compaq&search_constraint=0&tc=0&ic=48_0&ref=+125875.126124&tab_value=20_All

That means it’s a special model made custom for Wal-Mart, and the specs on this model may not be up-to-par with similar models numbers on Compaq’s regular retail lineup.

I found these specs on this laptop. According to a guy in my IT department here at work, he said for the price you can’t beat it. I”m looking to purchase for my two son’s for Xmas. They mostly use Word for school work and the Internet. He said for what I need it for it will do the job. We are, however, going to remove Vista and install XP for numerous reasons. XP is not such a space hog so it will run faster than with Vista plus my sons use XP now and its what they are used to. Plus, none of their software games will run with Vista.

Spoke Yesterday with one guy from Walmart, he pledged they have 40pcs of the laptop, but the laptops remained in safe store deep into their storage warehousem, He couldn\’t even confirm the model number (?) , I feel a little uncomfortable with the whole situation

  10. MikeyMouse on November 7th, 2008 7:31 pm

Just make a phone call again, same store, the store only haves 10pcs now, I’m begging to believe it’s a trap

  11. Kim on November 7th, 2008 9:36 pm

it’s true I work for a major vendor inside of wal-mart who sells our products and I have the actual email that went to our VP. so today I called wally world and they have them for 298.00 the doors open at 8am. The downside there are only 10 per store since I work in retail when ever our COR do something like that, that means two things they really have twelve easy AND the very next day they will have more which means later that night more SHOULD arrive on a wally world 18 wheeler. That has just been my experience in selling retail.

Go to Compaq and search for specifications for that model. You’ll find faqs and downloads and how to’s but not a hint of specifications. Creepy!

  16. Walmartguy on November 8th, 2008 4:19 am

I work at a walmart in ohio. I know my store has 30 of the compaq computers to go on sale at 8am saturday nov. 8. There going to give out numbers at 7am to the first 30 in line.

  17. christina grimm on November 8th, 2008 5:32 am

luckly the wal-mart by me is about five mins away. so dont have to worry about traveling far. My local wal-mart said they have had over 35 people call about one.and belive me i plan on getting there early even if i have to stand there for two hrs just to get one im gonna do it.good luck to all of you

  18. Bill V on November 8th, 2008 2:42 pm

Just got one - my good-sized Wal-Mart had at least 30, perhaps as many as 50. Only had to wait about an hour. Since it’s a new model, may not have all the specs updated on the Compaq site.

  19. Christy on November 8th, 2008 3:33 pm

I went to wal-mart in middle Georgia this morning at 7:00 am and was #15 in line. I got mine and they said they had about 10 left.

  20. W.J. on November 8th, 2008 5:22 pm

THE STORE IN COPPERAS COVE HAD AT LEAST 60 OF THE UNITS. THE LINE WAS OREDERLY AND FRIENDLY. THE REGISTER WENT DOWN AND A LADY STANDING IN LINE WHO WORKED THERE ACTUALLY GAVE UP HER SPACE IN LINE AND HELPED TO REROUTE CUSTOMERS TO OTHER REGISTERS. THATS CUSTOMER SERVICE

  21. connie lawrence on November 8th, 2008 8:50 pm

am senior and would like to purchase 2 computers for grandaughters that are not too well off. The walmart compac laptop sounds terrific. Are their limited ones because I live 22 miles from walmart and probably wont get there until first of week. Thank you

  22. Angie on November 8th, 2008 9:17 pm

We picked up two of these computers around 10:30 a.m. today. We did not even know about it until we were looking for something and saw a limit on one tv and three laptops. We asked what it was about and the man there said they were out. Then my husband was at the computer area register and asked the girl there if they had any and she said there were two right here. We bought one for my husband (he is working on it now) and one for my son for his birthday. We have two weeks to try it. The store said they got seventy in. We got the last two (so they say). This is Wal Mart on Allen road in Peoria, IL.

  23. Bonnie Crapps on November 8th, 2008 10:32 pm

I got two this morning with my daughter in tow. We were number one and two in line. She wanted to get up and get these for Christmas. I thought they had webcams, but did not the quick guide shows webcam. The only thing is they said to open and test them because you only have 15 days for return if something is wrong with them. So my kids got to play with their xmas early which is disappointing.

So far it is great and easy to set up. Runs smoothly but I like MACs so I don’t know how the virus protection works. Any ideas for FREE virus protection?

  24. Bonnie Crapps on November 8th, 2008 10:35 pm

Oh, by the way my store had 30 small store in MS.

  25. Beth on November 8th, 2008 11:35 pm

The deal is valid. My mom and I got to the super Walmart 10 mins from my apartment at about 5:30 am and once we figured out where we had to stand (not in electronics but between the shoes and luggage heading back to where layway used to be) we were both number 9 and 10 in line. By the time 8am rolled around there was quite a line of people. The store we went to had 58 computers, the store the next town over had 40. The add didn’t say it was a total of 10 computers per store it was a minimum of 10. The biggest problem was they had only one line for all the major sales. So you had people standing in line to buy the pc’s as well as the ps3’s and I think the Sanyo tv’s as well. The other thing was that you could only purchase one computer per customer UNLESS you were in a party of several people even if they were family members they could each buy one so i’m not entirely sure how long the computers lasted. A pair of ladies in front of us bought 2 comps and a ps3 another family behind us said they planned on buying 3 and there were 5 of them hanging around together at one point. After we got our comps and left about 30 mins later my mom drove to the next town over and bought one for a friend who gave her some money to pick on up for her. My mom said when she got one for the friend there were only 11 left and still quite a number of people waiting in line to purchase one. I called the Walmart back near my apartment and asked about them but the lady who answered said they were all sold out. This was around 10am that I called. So the 58 sold out in about 2 hours and considering how SLOW everything was rolling if they had had more than one line open I’m sure they would have sold out sooner. As for the computer, I absolutely LOVE IT, infact I’m typing on it right now. It looks great and has the features I need PLUS it includes a DVD burner. Very very happy, and very much worth the two hours wait in line playing sudoku on my ipod!

  26. Beth on November 8th, 2008 11:52 pm

oh by the way, the didn’t offer numbers to people or take your name or anything if you were with in the 48, you had to stand in line the whole time and wait for 8am to roll around.

  27. Deb on November 9th, 2008 12:47 am

Our walmart had 71 PC’s, I didn’t go to the store for that, went for the Walkman MP3 Sony and ended up buying the Compaq PC also, what a great deal!!!! I didn’t get there till about 7:15 and was the 21st person in line…..short wait for such a fantastic price!!!!

  28. christina on November 9th, 2008 5:38 am

got my computer today for $298!! was there at 7:20am and was probably the 20th person in line…the computer is very nice, fast, sleek…all around a great computer

  29. Dollie on November 9th, 2008 6:32 am

I also work for Walmart, and just happen hear about the sale. So I jumped in on the action as well as my mangers, associates. People were buying two, three of them ,so they kept getting in line to buy another compaq.. One purchase pure customer as my manger allowed others to have the same chance to buy one too. We had at lease 40 of them.

Blahblahblah all you WALMART haters talking all that smack about my WALMART. WALMART more than delivered their ad said something like 10 per store and 2 per store on their 46” SANYO 1080p FULL HD LCD for $798 (that’s what you all should of got also). Starting at 8 am well I got their at 7:45am and was #2 of 20 on the TV and 21 of 41 on the bad _ss laptop heck for $299 I pay that on just my cell phones every month. Some people pay a lot more than that for a tiny little 2”screen cell phone. You cannot go wrong I’m typing on it now and have been using it since I got it. It more than gets the job done and I made $1500. I paid 3 day labor’s $50 each to go with me and they each got a TV and laptop some of them were able to buy 2 laptops each and I turned around and put them all on craigslist and sold every single one of them. Made $200 off each TV and $100 off each laptop. I was in and out of there in 45 minutes with 6 TV’s and 6 laptops. Hell they even helped bring them to the car. So to all you WALMART haters instead of sitting there on your _sses hating and running your mouths like little whiners’ think of how you can make a negative thing in to a money maker and next week when you see WALMART having a kick_ss deal you’re going to use your brain I bet this time but be fair with the day labor’s don’t be cheap and just paid them $5 or $10 ok talk to you all next week and this time let me hear how much money you made.

  31. Don on November 9th, 2008 5:56 pm

Saw the add for the Compaq at Walmart and went down yesterday at around 7:40 and there were already 20 people in line for the machine. However, they must have had about 30 or 40 machines to sell and was able to pick one up. Had been told they might only have 10 or so per store, so was pleasantly surprised I got one. At this price it was hard to pass up.

  32. Johnny Hazelton on November 9th, 2008 11:48 pm

I seen the add come over the Yahoo page. The Store in Graham Tx has 22. I got there at 6:00 am i was number 5 in line. Just after 7:00 there was abouy 40 in line, only 2 wanted the PS3 and 2 for the TV the rest wanted the Laptop. really nice for the price.

  33. Jack on November 10th, 2008 12:01 am

Our store in Rocklin, CA had 100 of them which went on sale at 8 AM Sat and they were all gone by 10 AM. I was lucky enought to get one

  34. maxi on November 11th, 2008 5:31 am

Hi, I was on line from 5:30 am thinking that there would be no one there. Wrong!!!!!!! I was number 48. My store had 68. My walmart had used the ticket system. If you had a ticket, you were getting a lap top. I didn’t walk out of wal mart until 9:15 am…Was it worth it? YES!!!!!!!!!!! I love my laptop! Thank you wal mart for the incredable price! Love it!!!!

    New York City

  35. Connie on November 17th, 2008 12:56 pm

Well, you all are lucky to get the computers. The Walmarts in Oklahoma wouldn’t let us have the computers for the price that was advertised. Now after we stood there for almost two hours we could buy them for over $400. Manager said Oklahoma Walmart didn’t have to honor the ads. So now I am really upset and feel like boycotting the Walmart. I needed and wanted an affordable laptop. It just isn’t right I tell you!!!
