Phillips Essence super-thin new minimalist LCD TV

September 2, 2008 by Nikki

At the IFA in Berlin, Phillips has confirmed the launch of their LCD TV model the “Essence” (42PES0001). So to tell you a little more, it this 9000 series LCD TV will have a 42-inch screen, but most importantly will only be 38mm think, surrounding will be a svelte 17mm, and will be from black polished aluminum.

The other great thing about this screen, is that the Essence has done something quite wonderful to keep this screen minimal, the most important being the separate “connectivity” box, which will attach to the screen via a single 4m cable. Secondary devices can be attached to the HDMI connectors on the box to avoid a mass of cable and untidy room.

This single 4m cable will power the Audi, the screen, video and as Phillips has told us, it links for your remote controls, making it possible for you to put all your hardware into a cupboard out of sight but still have control.

So, to in-keep with the minimalist clean design, the Philips Essence comes with a easy wall mounting system, allowing the TV to be hung virtually flush to the wall, the Essence also comes with sound bar (delivering 2 x 15 watts). Also wants so great about the mounting of this TV, it only weights 16.5kg so you can level the TV by hand, instead of doing yourself a injury trying to mount it.

If we take a look into the screen the will be Philips Perfect Pixel HD engine ensuring the screen delivers great performance through a combination of advanced technologies to remove motion judder, making sure you get perfect and using Philips’ 100Hz ClearLCD. The Phillips Essence will also have Ethernet connection allowing you to streamline media from an UPnP source and it is DNLA certified.

If you’re thinking what a great LCD TV and want to know how much this is going to cost you then you will be looking to part with about 2500 Euros.

There is a new Bose Sound dock on the way and while many gadget sites have said that you will not find many changes in the specifications, they may be a little wrong, especially when it comes to Apple iPhone 3G owners.

On my desk in front of me is a nice Bose Sound Dock, and while its got an amazing sound, it hates the iPhone 3G. When you put the latest iPhone on the dock, it will not charge the device.

So the new SoundDock Series II digital music system may not have many new features, but its perfect for those who may need to upgrade their old Bose sound docks with a newer model to support the latest iPhone.

On the Bose system there is a new auxiliary input so you can connect other audio devices, and the latest device is also a lot sleeker.

The Series II digital music system measuring just 6 1/2-inches deep, by 12-inches wide and 6 5/8-inches high. The new SoundDock will be available at the start of September for $299.

Ronn Motors Scorpion runs on hydrogen & gasoline

Ronn Motors looks as if they are about to please two types of people, firstly drivers who love speed and secondly people who care a little for the environment.

Ronn Motors have developed the Scorpion, which has huge amounts of power but does not produce as much emissions as other supercars. The Scorpion is both clean and fast; this is thanks to the car using a mix of hydrogen and gasoline.

According to Bornrich, the engine used in the Scorpion is a 3.5-liter, six-cylinder VTEC engine from Acura. The engine usually pushes out 280hp, but thanks to twin turbos this is bumped up to 450hp. The hydrogen fuelled engine is connected to an on-demand hydrogen system, this then breaks down the molecules and holds them in a non-pressurized tank. This system does without the need for a hydrogen refueling station.

30 to 40 percent of that hydrogen then gets mixed with standard gasoline; this allows the Scorpion to achieve 40mpg.

The Ronn Motors Scorpion weighs 2,100 pound and will go from 0-60 in just 3.5 seconds.

If you love speed and also care for the environment then I hope you have deep pockets, as the Scorpion will set you back $150,000.

HP Labs today announced new research initiatives

June 5, 2008 by Daniel

HP today announced new research initiatives from HP Labs, the company’s central research arm, aimed at developing new technologies and business models that leave a lighter carbon footprint.

Initially, HP Labs will focus its research in sustainability on three major projects, including: an industry-first initiative to reduce the carbon footprint of data centers by 75 percent; groundbreaking research to replace copper wiring in servers with laser light beams; and tools for measuring and managing the amount of energy used to develop products.

Sustainability is one of five major research themes of the newly redesigned HP Labs, which recently refocused its efforts to address the most complex challenges facing technology customers in the next decade.

“HP’s long-standing commitment to the environment is second to none in the technology industry. Today, HP Labs extends our dedication with these important research initiatives that will advance the state of the art in sustainable IT,” said Prith Banerjee, senior vice president, research, and director, HP Labs. “HP Labs will lead the industry in developing the technology that could dramatically reduce energy consumption and the carbon footprint of entire industries.”

The ultimate sustainable data center

HP Labs unveiled its Sustainable Data Center project, which is focused on reducing the carbon footprint of data centers by 75 percent while simultaneously reducing the total cost of ownership. For example, an average data center that consumes five megawatts of electricity annually could power more than 4,300 homes in the United States for a year. This research project will enable companies to drastically reduce the amount of electricity consumed in the data center.

Under the leadership of Chandrakant Patel, HP Fellow and director of the Sustainable IT Ecosystem Lab, researchers will study how energy is used and managed for the entire lifetime of a data center, from its design, synthesis, operation and end-of-life for its components. The research team, which includes computer scientists, materials scientists, physicists, and mechanical and electrical engineers, will use this information to develop data center technologies that achieve a massive reduction in resource consumption while maintaining performance, reliability and uptime requirements.

HP expects this research to open up new markets for its business by extending the technology to other areas such as smart buildings, grids and print factories.

Replacing copper with light to improve energy efficiency

A second sustainability research initiative is focused on replacing the copper-based electrical connections used in today’s IT systems with optical laser communication links.

The Photonic Interconnect project, led by HP Senior Fellow and Director of Information and Quantum Systems Lab, R. Stanley Williams, builds on years of research dedicated to building photonic optical connections and components.

Photonic interconnections make it possible to fit dozens, and eventually hundreds, of processors on server system chips. In addition, the optical connections are 20 times more efficient than what is on the market today and will save companies multiple gigawatts of power annually, thus driving down IT costs. The photonic interconnects, which range in distance from 100 meters to 100 nanometers, also enable more flexible system configurations that can be quickly redeployed based on business needs.

New approach for modeling and measuring energy and material use

HP Labs also introduced a new project, to be led by Patel, focused on developing a set of tools that can model, predict, measure and manage the environmental impact of product manufacturing, supply chains and business processes.

HP will develop software and services tools to measure and manage key environmental impact metrics, such as carbon emissions, total energy usage and non-recoverable energy consumption. HP will use the tools to help customers re-engineer their businesses to be more sustainable and cost-effective through the innovative use of IT. This project will initially focus on three primary areas:

  • HP Labs researchers are developing analyses of commercial printing and publishing industries that compare the sustainability impact of their current business models against a reduced impact that would result from the deployment of new research technologies. The aim is to identify and quantify how such research technologies can be best deployed to increase efficiency and reduce resource and energy use as well as carbon emissions. HP plans to extend this research to its customers in other vertical industries.
  • HP Labs researchers have developed a unique approach to quantify the costs and environmental impact of a product by looking at the amount of available energy, known as exergy, that was used in that product’s life cycle from extraction, manufacturing, shipping, usage and recycling. HP Labs and the University of California at Berkeley have jointly developed the Lifetime Exergy Advisor, a software tool designed to assess a product’s total environmental impact through joules, units of available energy. The Lifetime Exergy Advisor can help organizations determine the environmental benefits gained from using alternative materials and processes across every phase of the product life cycle. HP believes that as the world’s energy resources are increasingly tapped, companies will measure the amount of joules associated with the creation of a product much they way they measure dollars, so joules will be valued as much as currency.
  • To harness the knowledge of the world’s leading experts in sustainability, HP Labs researchers plan to create an open online resource, called a “sustainability hub,” to gather and share data and information about the sustainable design of products. Sustainability experts, researchers, scientists, engineers and academia from around the world are invited to contribute to the hub, which will have a repository of research information dedicated to the development of tools and methodologies for sustainability. The sustainability hub is expected to be available to the public in 2009. HP Labs intends to apply the data in future research to quantify the amount of available energy used when new products and supply chains are created across the entire global ecosystem.

More information on these projects is available at the HP Labs website at www.hpl.hp.com.

Xbox 360 Motion Sensitive Controls Like Sony PS3: Is this needed?

April 22, 2008 by Daniel
Filed under Game Video & Trailers, Gaming, Xbox 360

The Sony PS3 has had motion sensitive controls from day one and while they are not as good as the Nintendo Wii’s, it’s still something extra. The question would be how much motion sensitive controls is really needed on games consoles like the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, to be honest I never use the tilt feature on my PS3 and would of liked the rumble from day one instead of motion sensitive controls.

One 360 gamer has taken it upon himself to make a MOD for the Xbox 360 which gives his control motion sensitive controls and tilt gameplay, the video below shows how it works but again is this really needed. The short answer is simple; modders do something like this just to prove it can be done not for this innovation to be sold in retail stores.

The video creator said, “The mod uses a two-axis accelerometer that measures the left/right and up/down tilt, which is determined by measuring the force of gravity on the axis. The only part of the left analog stick that works after the modification is the button”. The six axis feature on the PS3 has not helped it in sales as far as I know, so this feature is not needed on the 360 in my opinion, but its still a job well done to the guy who done the mod.

In Summary: It works, the wires are a little exposed but he achieved his goal of giving the 360 a tilt controller.

Tom Cruise Refuses to consider IVF treatment due to Scientology
It has been reported that Tom Cruise has refused to have IVF treatment in a bid to conceive a baby with Katie Holmes.

It’s said that Katie is growing increasingly concerned that she has been unable to fall pregnant for the second time and that Katie was desperate to undergo the fertility treatment but Tom has banned it because it is frowned on by the Scientology movement.

A source said that “Katie’s concerned about Suri being lonely as she’s kept in a bit of a Scientology bubble. She wants her to have a playmate. Tom keeps telling her to focus on Scientology methods of creating “positive energy” to become pregnant, which he’s convinced worked the first time around, but Katie’s losing patience. She’s getting frantic and the worst thing is she knows that the more stressed she becomes, the less likely she is to conceive.”
