Google Chrome OS: A Detailed Preview
News regarding Google’s Chrome OS had pretty much died down up until yesterday, however following a press event held by Google more details began to emerge, yesterday we heard that the OS will boot up in just 7 seconds now we have more details to reveal to you.
A recent article posted on ubergizmo titled “Google Chrome OS, What’s New?” takes a very in-depth look at the upcoming OS and tells us some details that we have not yet heard.
Some of the details were posted in yesterdays article, these details included the fact that Google Chrome OS would only work on hardware which Google specified, therefore it seems that you will only be able to get hold of Chrome if you buy a machine with it pre-installed on.
According to ubergizmo it also seems as if Chrome will only be compatible with Intel and ARM processors, which is a shame for those of us AMD fans out there.
The boot-up of the OS is said to be very fast (again mentioned yesterday), one reason behind this is that Chrome OS will only run on SSD’s, solid-state-disks offer extremely quick read speeds which will help boot times, especially if combined with a well written OS.
As you may have already heard the SSD will only have to have a small capacity, this is due to the fact that data will be stored online, it is thought that Chrome will require a Internet connection almost always, however if a connection is lost you should have the ability to work offline (exactly how this works is currently a mystery).
One criticism people have is the security of your data which is stored online, personally I feel that this is up to you to keep secure, you can do this by carrying out two-simple steps, firstly choose an extremely un-obvious and strong password and secondly never let anyone know this password.
Personally I am quite intrigued to see how the OS will do, and whether it will really pressure Microsoft, we can expect to see Chrome OS devices launch in late 2010.
Does any of the news covered in this article disappoint you? I’m slightly frustrated that I will not be able to download and install the OS on my AMD-based computer to try it out.
