Primus Telecom offer shaped mobile broadband

August 28, 2008 by Nikki

There has been a new mobile broadband service launched by Primus Telecom which will not charge excess on your data when you have reached your data allowance, it will be speed-shaped once your limit is reached.

CEO of Primus, Ravi Bhatia said in a statement “Today’s consumers want the freedom to be online at any time and the existing mobile broadband pricing packages have potential risk for excessive and unexpected download charges, often amounting to several hundred dollars in a month”.

So, once you have reached your monthly data allowance, for the remainder of the monthly billing period it will be shaped at 64Kbps.

If we take a look at the Primus speedster site, we can see that practical speeds for the service will be 384Kbps to 3.6Mbps for HSDPA devices, 200Kbps to 384Kbps for 3G and 20Kbps to 40Kbps for 2G.

Primus is offering 6GB for $39.95 per month with a free modem on a 24-month contract as a special offer for September.

Andrew Sims, General Manager of Products and Marketing said in a statement, “In our experience, 6GB of data allowance per month is more than sufficient for an average internet user,” There are other price plans going live on the website this afternoon, these will be $29.95 for 1GB, or $19.95 bundled with a mobile and $79.95 for 12GB, or $69.95 with a mobile.

The product uses Optus’ mobile network, and if the customer wishes for extra data allowance they can go on-line and by it using their account toolbox.

The company have made some changes to introduce the new shaping, they moved away from a complete resale off Optus products, and they are now chandelling everything through its own network and doing a lot of the provisioning work itself, So basically Primus are less reliant on Optus.

The service will be provided using the Huawei E220 modem, which runs on 2,100MHz.

For those of you looking for an alternative to your voicemail, you can be pleased that users on Verizon will now be able to have Visual Voicemail on your Voyager.

Voyager users who are running software version VK10KV09 will have the ability to watch and listen to your messages without dialling that *86 each time, a feature that iPhone users have been enjoying for a while now.

The application itself is free, but to use the service will cost $2.99 per month not including data charges. For those of you without a VCAST plan, look away as you will be charged $1.99 per MB. So careful use is advised unless you want to end up with a whopping bill. The App also allows you to store 40 messages for 40 days and have 10 separate greetings based on caller-IDS which is very useful.

Since the service isn’t entirely free, it may not please many of you Voyager users out there, but at least it’s good that they are looking to improve things for the future.

Honda develops device to help the disabled and elderly walk

April 23, 2008 by Peter

When it comes to developing cars Honda are one of the best in the business however; the Japanese automaker also develops other things like a jet as well as that cool looking walking robot called Asimo. Getting Asimo walking on its own was a hard but worthwhile task and Honda are about to put that kind of technology to good use.

Honda will be taking some of its robotic technology to the International Trade Fair where they will showcase the technology that they used for the robot to walk unaided and will offer it as a unique aid to help the disabled and elderly walk. These devices will be available in three sizes and will use brushless DC motors which are powered by lithium ion batteries. These batteries will allow you to use the device for about 2 hours between charges.

Auto Companies such as Honda do take a lot of criticism from tree huggers who do not like how some of their cars pollute our earth; however they do not think about all the good work that they do to help how we live our lives. What I would like to know is would a person who works for someone like Greenpeace turn one of these walking devices down if they had trouble walking, knowing that it has been developed with money from and auto maker.

Sky HD vs Freeview HD: Ofcom confirms final plans for high definition

April 3, 2008 by Daniel
Filed under Electronics, High Definition, News

The day that Sky HD was released I got the service as I wanted the best for my large HDTV, but after one year and the contact had ended, I left Sky HD, as there was not enough HD channels. Today we are hearing that Ofcom has published its plans that will overhaul digital terrestrial television in the UK, this includes information on the planned launch of Freeview HD in 2008. Ofcom wants all multiplex operators to use the QAM-64 digital transmission mode, this will allow for a greater number of channels to be broadcast per multiplex and also multiplex B will end up carrying high definition channels.

Sky HD charges an extra £10 for its HD channels which are just the same channels you get in standard definition, really they should be giving this as a free offer but that would be too good for the customer I guess. To that happens, the only free HD channels we are going to see will be Freeview HD. Hit the read link below for more information on Ofcom’s final plan for Freeview HD.
