GNGWC 2008: Game and Game World Championship starts in Europe

The international game contest, GNGWC, sponsored by KIPA, has been held for 3 years for the purpose of globalization of Korean online games. In this year, 4 Korean games, including ShotOnline (by OnNet), Atlantica (by NDoors), SilkroadOnline (by JoyMax), and Navy Field (by SDEnternet), have been chosen for official games. The online preliminary contests will start in July, the local final contests will be in 6 countries all around the world, and the final match will be in Korea in November.
GNGWC has become a source to find out great online games developed by medium or small sized Korean game companies, and to help them distribute the products to overseas by their own capacities in the short period of time.
Korea was the number one in the online game industries on the basis of world class IT infrastructures and game developments. But other countries such as China getting into the business lately have been improved rapidly, and Korea’s overseas marketing with licensing through local publishers has met the limitation causing its market decrease. At this moment, KIPA’s GNGWC has become the window for Korean game companies to prove their superior products internationally.
KIPA and its official sponsor KT Corporation (CEO: Jungsu NAM) established base servers in 6 different countries considering their online infrastructures in order to support localization and marketing of the games for GNGWC. This year in GNGWC, based on the administration know-how regarding international game contests, contests will be held in 6 countries, which is one more country compared to last year.
In GNGWC 2007, about 120 gamers through online preliminary contests and the local final contests all around the world competed. The official games of last year such as Lunia (by Allm), BombNDash (by Innodis), and Navy Field (by SDEnternet) have been contracted for overseas services through GNGWC 2007. As a result, those companies reached significant marketing achievements, i.e. increasing the number of new users, etc.
GNGWC 2008 will start with online preliminary contests in July, with subsequent local final contests in Europe (Leipzig, Germany), Southeast Asia (Singapore), North America (San Francisco, U.S.A.), Korea (Yongin), South America (Sang Paulo, Brazil), and Japan (Tokyo), and the final contest will be in Korea in November.
Taekmin KWON from the Digital Contents Business Group of KIPA said “Korean online game industries are currently depressed, and we need the entry for global market as soon as possible. And GNGWC will be the suitable marketing means”, and added “We will try to foster the domestic e-sports contests using foreign games for professional gamers, will try to encourage public users with Korean online games through the GNGWC.”

NISSAN Tiida in China Circuit Championship Round 3

June 8, Beijing Golden Port Circuit Round 3 of the “China Circuit Championship” or “CCC” took place at Beijing’s Golden Port Circuit (1 lap, 2.39kms), continuing the closely-fought battle from the last round in the series. The winner in the 1,600 class was a NISSAN Tiida, run by the DongFeng NISSAN Ghia Team, driver #4Lin Li Feng taking a lights-to-flag victory.
After taking 2nd in the opening round, and then an unfortunate retirement in the following race, this event saw the #4Lin’s car turn up with 20kgs success ballast. Showing perfect consistent of speed in qualifying, pole position was duly snatched. In the warm-up session held on the morning of race day, his rivals also demonstrated quick lap times, but it was no worry for Lin ahead of the final race. On this day, Beijing’s Golden Port Circuit was blessed with fine weather. Just prior to race start, the temperature stood at 33 degrees Celsius, with the track surface measured at 43 C which was like day on midsummer. A total of 17 cars left the line together for the start of the race, Lin calmly holding on to the lead. Over the course of the opening lap, he built up a gap over the ensuing pack. Later on, last year’s championship-winning Volkswagen and Kia Cerato gave chase, but Lin gradually moved further and further away. He ran at the head of the field for the duration of the 33-lap event. It was a lights-to-flag victory, his first win of the season.
Meanwhile, his teammate and 2006 series champion #3Guo Haisheng was saddled with a colossal 120kgs success ballast in qualifying, relegating him to a fifth-place start. Guo fought for position with the 4th-place starter, the #7 Kia Cerato throughout the opening lap, finally taking the position after a daring move on the back straight stuck at the last corner. Heavy side contact however meant that the cars spun out. Both machines ended up in the gravel bed and went into retirement.
Winner Lin Li Feng:
“Over the course of the first 10 laps, I was a little worried when the following cars made up some ground. Over the final 10 laps however, I was able to ease off a little as I had built up a bit of a margin. The handicap weight has now become 100kgs – still very heavy. The next round is at Zhuhai, our home circuit, so somehow we’ll have to finish on the podium. I really want to fight to be this year’s champion. Today, we got support from over 500 Tiida Owner’s Club members. It’s really very gratifying, thank you all very much.”
The season has now reached its halfway point, with Wang(Kia) leading on 20 points. Lin (NISSAN Tiida) sits in 2nd with 2 points down. Also, in the tie for 3rd is Guo (NISSAN Tiida) and the top VW, with the battle set to continue.

Ashley Force’s Mustang Funny Car reaches semifinal at NHRA race
Ashley Force, driver of the Castrol GTX Mustang, made it to the third round of the NHRA race in Joliet, Ill., before losing to Tony Pedregon. She remains second in the standings, now just 57 points behind leader Tim Wilkerson. Read the press release below.
DEARBORN, Mich., June 8, 2008 – Ashley Force’s Mustang Funny Car may have been the best dragster going into Sunday’s NHRA race in Joliet, Ill., but a broken belt in the semifinal round ended her day early, highlighting a busy Ford Racing weekend.
Force qualified third and had defeated her teammate Robert Hight in the first round and Gary Scelzi in the second round on her way to the semifinal against Tony Pedregon. In the semifinal run, Force jumped out to an early lead before her car suffered a dropped cylinder and broken supercharger drive belt, causing her to lose enough power to end her day earlier than she hoped.
“This weekend I definitely felt like we were going to go a lot of rounds because my car was so good,” Force said. “The conditions were so difficult, but we still ran well. Getting our car down both lanes really gave us some confidence. We had a really good feeling going into this race. It’s tough on the team when you have to sit around in the rain. We were ready every round, and I am so proud of my guys. There were no mistakes. Bad luck just bit us, (but) we gave them a run for their money.”
Force remains second in the standings, now just 57 points behind leader Tim Wilkerson.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup series was at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa., where Matt Kenseth finished as the top Ford driver in the race in the No. 17 Fusion. Kenseth crossed the finish line in seventh place and moved up one spot to 15th in the standings as he continues his charge toward championship contention.
Carl Edwards led late in the race for a few laps before heading into pit road. On his way out, Edwards’ car had a flat left-rear tire and he needed to pit yet again, dropping him to 33rd. Edwards would fight back the rest of the race and still ended with a top-10 finish, taking ninth place. He remains fourth in the standings.
“It was not too bad,” said Edwards of his finish considering his flat tire. “We have just got to a better job on pit road. But, we went from 34th to ninth. I’m not real good at math, but that’s a lot of cars. This was fun. I mean, I had a good time on that last run. I just wish (I had) 10 more laps or something to work on people, you know?”
David Ragan led all Ford drivers across the finish line in the NASCAR Nationwide Series race in Nashville, Tenn., finishing fifth in the No. 6 Fusion. Ragan has landed a top-10 finish eight times through 15 Nationwide Series races this season.
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series drivers competed in Fort Worth, Texas, this weekend. Bobby East, who was behind the wheel No. 09 F-150 for the second time this season, spent the entire day running in the top 10 before eventually finishing eighth. The finish marked East’s first top-10 result in a NASCAR event. East has run in a total of 37 NASCAR events; 26 Truck Series races and 11 Nationwide Series races.
“The Zaxby’s Ford F-150 was great,” said East. “We unloaded good, and Chad Norris and the crew did a great job. Our performance was because of him, Mike Beam and Matt Puccia. I want to thank everybody. I want to thank Jack Roush for this opportunity.”
East will also be driving the No. 09 F-F150 again next weekend at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Mich.
Four Fords finished in the top 10 spots of the Grand-Am Rolex Series race at Watkins Glen, N.Y. Team Owner Michael Shank’s No. 60 Ford-Riley Daytona Prototype, driven by Oswaldo Negri Jr. and Mark Patterson, took fourth place, while his No. 6 Ford-Riley Daytona Prototype, driven by Ian James and John Pew, were sixth.
“All of our drivers really pulled their weight for all six hours out there,” said Shank. “Oz [Negri Jr.] and Ian did over three hours each and didn’t put a wheel wrong. It was a very good weekend all around for us. We were in the fight all day, and Mark put in I think his absolute best stint ever, bringing the car into the pits in second place deep into the race. Just fantastic.”
Memo Gidley and Brad Jaeger finished fifth in the No. 77 Ford-Dallara Daytona Prototype and Brian Frisselle and Mark Wilkins took seventh in the No. 61 Ford-Riley Daytona Prototype.
Next weekend, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will compete at Michigan International Speedway, while the NASCAR Nationwide Series will be in Sparta, Ky. Also competing will be the Grand-Am KONI Challenge and the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge at Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ont.
