HD VMD vs Blu-ray: is this the new format war
We know that the format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray is over, and it was the latter that was victories. However if Blu-ray thought that they could take it easy, then they will have to think again.

Many people in the industry are now saying that there could be another format war coming. The contender to Blu-ray is HD VMD. This format is made by a London company called New Medium Enterprises.

There are two things that HD VMD have going for them, the first is that the quality is much the same as Blu-ray and the second is that it has a lower price. Could this be enough to help HD VMD take on the king of format Blu-Ray?

Have you got a Sony Blu-ray player yet, if not why?

Sony Blu-ray player
I have not bought a dedicated Sony Blu-ray player as it would not make sense with my Sony PS3 having one, but this does let me buy and rent Blu-ray discs. Watching movies on Blu-ray and with a high definition TV is fantastic and much better than DVD, but is it worth it.

With the news of Sony putting up Blu-ray prices, why would you want one now if they are getting more expensive.

Have you got a Sony Blu-ray player yet, if not why?

My Sony PS3 Blu-ray drive gets a movie in it about every 2 weeks, so if the PS3 did not have one I doubt I would of bought one.

Sony Blu-ray sales increasing thanks to blockbuster movies

Sony Blu-ray sales increasing
It looks like the sales of Sony Blu-ray discs are increasing and this is in part thanks to more blockbuster movies being released, but lets face it who would want to buy expensive old movies just because they are in Blu-ray. HMR Research has new data which shows 3 million Blu-rays have been sold in the first 11 weeks of 2008 compared to 9 million movies for all of 2007, this means we could be looking at 15 million Blu-ray movies sold in 2008.

Recent blockbusters like “No Country for Old Men” sold 68,000 Blu-ray copies in one week and “Juno” is coming to Blu-ray on April 15th and could be massive as well. With HD-DVD dead it looks like it’s all up from here.

Is the Sony PS3 Blu-ray good enough or do we need a standalone player?

Is the Sony PS3 Blu-ray good enough or do we need a standalone player?
So I have been sitting here watching a Blu-ray movie on my Sony PS3, man I fell good that Blu-ray has won over HD DVD. Then I got to thinking about a standalone Blu-ray player and how they are not future proof.

The thing is as far as I know the Blu-ray player in the Sony PlayStation 3 is future proof as the firmware update that we get, adds new features all the time. The thing is is the built-in Blu-ray player in this games console as good as a standalone player.

Many people have said that the Blu-ray player in the Sony PS3 is not as good as a standalone player. However I have no problems with the built-in player, the thing is if you have a TV that you have spent thousands on and one of the most expensive Blu-ray players, only then will you get to see a difference.

So do we need a standalone Blu-ray player or is PS3 good enough?

Xbox 360 and Playstation 3: Streaming movies vs Blu-ray

No Xbox 360 Blu-ray
Its been rumored for a while now that the Xbox 360 may get a Blu-ray drive now that HD-DVD is dead, the short answer from E3 2008 is NO.

Microsoft has confirmed that it has no plan to develop a Blu-ray drive at anytime, that includes an external or internal Blu-ray drive. They have also announced this week that they have a partnership with Netflix for Streaming movies.

The future war for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 now seems to be streaming movies vs. Blu-ray, although Sony is in a position to have the best of both worlds with its movie download service coming this year and also sporting the high definition disc drive.

Netflix will be a major boost to the Xbox 360 and can only be a blow to Blu-ray, but just how much damage can Netflix cause to Blu-ray for those wanting to watch high definition movies?

With Microsoft focusing on digital distribution and Sony pushing Blu-rays, what will end up the favorite for the end user? Do you prefer Blu-ray or streaming movies?

Xbox 360 built-in Blu-ray drive or external?

June 27, 2008 by Daniel

Xbox 360 built-in Blu-ray drive
There still seems to be a lot of confusion to what a DVD can do on the Xbox 360 and what it cannot, some people believe that if Microsoft were to upgrade their 360 games console with a Blu-Ray drive, then game developers would not be limited to the storage capacity of a DVD.

Microsoft knew this in part and that’s why they added an external HD-DVD drive, but as HD-DVD is now defunct, Blu-ray is the next obvious step and many owners of the Xbox 360 cannot wait for this to happen. One issue that might be obvious, if this is the case Xbox 360 owners want an external Blu-ray drive and new 360 buyers would want a built-in Blu-ray.

So lets raise a couple of questions, would you want an Xbox 360 to have a built-in Blu-ray drive like the Sony PS3 or an external version? and also let us know why you make that choice.

Some people will never want a Blu-ray drive and they feel that the 360 does not need it, its hard to believe that a DVD can handle all that is needed in today’s advanced games, but still some gamers believe a DVD does just fine. In the end, it does seem logical that Microsoft will add the Blu-ray option and it will likely be in both an external for existing owners and a built-in Blu-ray for new buyers.

Are you happy to keep having DVD’s for games that you buy for the Xbox 360 or do you see a need for Blu-ray discs?

Sony Blu-ray Player Prices Increase as HD DVD is dead

Sony Blu-ray Player Prices Increase as HD DVD is dead
Remember the good old days when Blu-ray was competing with its rival format HD DVD, well it seems that we have to dig a little deeper into our pockets. Now that HD DVD is dead that has sparked an increase in prices for the Sony Blu-ray players, as they do not have any competition to worry about.

When HD DVD players were on the market, Blu-ray did not see it as tough competition but it was because of the cheap price of the HD DVD players that forced Sony into reducing their prices as their Blu-ray players were not selling quick enough.

One of the main reasons that the HD DVD format died is because most of the people who was purchasing Blu-ray titles owned a PlayStation 3, this was yet another reason for them to cut the price of their standalone players.

Now we have to wonder how much more will have to pay for a Blu-ray player, as Sony has no one competing with them.
