Children evading Facebook, Bebo and MySpace age restrictions
August 7, 2008

It has been reported that almost a quarter of children aged between eight and twelve have been evading the age restrictions that have been put in place from social networking sites. Those sites that children have managed to evade are Facebook, Bebo and MySpace.
These result were taking from a poll which was commissioned by Garlik, it shows that over 75,000 children are illicitly using the sites. The alarming fact shows that children are allowing themselves to become exposed to communicate with strangers. This news is a little alarming.
Parents have been doing their utmost to try and stop this from happening, many have been secretly logging on to their children’s social networking pages to see if they have been doing anything reckless on there.
Tom Ilube, chief executive of Garlik has said “The fact that parents feel compelled to monitor their children on this scale should send a powerful message to the big social networking sites.”
Both Bebo and Facebook have an age limit of 13 while Myspace has set their age limit at 14. Also an alarming fact is that a quarter of 8 to 15 year olds have admitted of having strangers as friends on their social networking page. A fifth of that figure also said that they have met these strangers that they befriended online.
It is now time that these social networking sites did more to stop this from happening. But this is such a hard thing to monitor, this will take sometime to come up with a perfect solution.
Bebo joins in on alien activities

The wonderful world of the internet manages to come up with some bizarre stories from time to time and this latest one is no different. It appears that the popular social networking site, Bebo is set to become the first organisation to allow members of the public to record messages or images and relate
them to a representation of life.
The way this will work is that Bebo members will be able to send their messages to Bebo until the closing date of the event, which is 30th September. The top 500 messages will be chosen and then sent off to the ‘nearest planet’ outside our solar system, interesting stuff.
These messages will be sent using a state of the art radar telescope from the National Space Agency of Ukraine on the 9th October, aiming to reach a planet named Gliese 581c. This process isn’t as simple as it sounds though as the planet in question is over twenty light years away, and according to ‘solar system rules’, the messages will take twenty years to arrive!
This project is all part of the ‘Message from Earth’ and will launch on August 4th, internet voting will take place to determine which messages get sent into space.

Paedophiles to be banned from using social network sites like Facebook and Bebo
April 4, 2008

The latest news reports that Paedophiles could be banned from social network sites like Facebook and Bebo, known convicted Paedophiles should not be allowed to use these sites full stop.
This new measure has been introduced by the Government and that registered sex offenders will indeed be monitored online as well as police being able to pass on their email addresses to social network sites.
This is all part of the Home Office taskforce on online child protection and they say that there are indeed fears that paedophiles are masquerading as young people and could possibly be grooming future victims.
We all know for example that Facebook allows you to put personal details on profiles such as phone numbers, email addresses and so forth, it all seems pretty easy for Paedophiles to find their next victim.
What are you views about Paedophiles using social network sites, and are you making sure that your children are not putting detailed information on these sites?

Social Network of Choice, Where do you go? Myspace, Facebook, Bebo or another
March 28, 2008

There are thousands of social networks online but only a few attract all the people who join these communities and the top three are MySpace, Facebook and Bebo.
Where do you go: MySpace, Facebook, Bebo or another?
Robert Colvile from the Telegraph posted an interesting article about how online social networks are “split along class lines” and the choice that you make reveals a lot about you. It is true MySpace, Bebo and Facebook are very different and attract different people. MySpace is the major name in social networking but over time this site has become much more spammy and sites like Facebook work because it’s profiles are much more simple.
In the end you will go where your friends are, if they stop using one social network you will move on. It’s really all about people and you will go where your people are.

Time Warner’s AOL buys social networking site Bebo for £420m

We all know that social networking sites are powerful for promotion and News Corp knew this a long time ago when they brought MySpace. Today we are hearing that Time Warner’s AOL is buying social networking site Bebo for £420m, that’s more than the £300m MySpace was brought for but today MySpace is valued at £7.5bn.
With 40 million members worldwide, that makes Bebo the second most popular social network site in the UK. This is what Ron Grant (AOL’s president), had to say “Bebo’s dynamic management team recognises the Internet is less about destination and more about connecting people, culture and lifestyles”.
